“Words cannot describe Mooncottage”

Just got back from our 8 day stay at Mooncottage. Wow! Almost hate to share the secret, but Brian's efforts in making his dream a reality deserve the accolades. Every word you have read on the Mooncottage website and on Trip Advisor is true. This is truly a magical and special place. From the moment you book your stay, every detail is thought of. Tips are provided on car rental, ferries, dining, beaches, snorkeling, etc., to make every minute of your stay a vacation of a lifetime. You will be torn every day between leaving the spectacular gorgeous view and accomodations, or visiting the wonderful beaches of St. John. Spotless clean rooms, bathrooms, kitchen and heated salt water pool, with ammenities like wireless notebook, DVD player, (with a DVD Movie library), paperback book library, gourmet kitchen, and magnificent landscaping and lighting only enhance the experience. The trip up Calabash Boom Road (cliff) every day is even fun, and the natural soaps provided on a leaf soap dish show just how every little detail has been thought of. No Cable TV, or A/C, but trust me, you won't miss it. We never even sampled the DVD collection, and there is a constant easterly trade wind blowing 10-15 knots all day and night. There might be bigger, more spectacular Villas in St. John, but none as romantic, private and well thought out as Mooncottage.

“Nudie Time For Adults!”
Reviewed 24 April 2012 for a stay in March 2012

Nudie Time for Adults! As our 2 year old grandson says: “I’m havin’ nudie time”! Take it from an “older” married couple who is young at heart and loves life: you don’t need clothes at Mooncottage! Save your strength and PACK LIGHT! Cannot stress that enough! Even if you go off the mountain each evening to dinner, Coral Bay is very casual and shorts and sundresses are perfect.

No matter how much or where you have traveled, Mooncottage on St. John Island is indeed special. You will absolutely reconnect with your significant other! On our flight home, our young lady seatmate asked us: “Excuse me…but what is your secret? You two seem so much in love”! We looked at each other and laughed! We told her that if she had just spent a week at the Mooncottage with the love of her life, she would look the same way! No TV; no phones; no noise; no distractions; complete privacy; drop-dead gorgeous views; just you and your significant other. You will absolutely go home feeling rejuvenated and more in love than ever before! Guaranteed!

Mooncottage is one of the best places we have ever rented. Brian has built a wonderful romantic retreat—take time to look over his photo album! It is well supplied with most of what you would need, paper towels, toilet paper, soaps, towels, extra linens, etc. It is spotless—and we are very fussy about cleanliness of our vacation rentals. The little pool was clean and refreshingly cool. The kitchen is supplied with plenty of utensils for cooking should you want to do that. Great music selection. We had everything we could possibly need or want there. Mooncottage is everything depicted on the website, and much more. You will not be disappointed if you choose to stay there. We hope to return one day for more Adult Nudie Time! Thank you Brian for sharing Mooncottage with us!

MISCELLANEOUS TIPS:
Travel Guides: Order the book Feet, Fins & Four Wheel Drive by Pam Gaffin. It was a wealth of information on all of the beaches, the drives, and the hikes. If you are into exploring, St. John Off The Beaten Track by Gerald Singer was also helpful.

Groceries: Definitely stop in Cruz Bay at Star Fish Market and stock up with what you think you will want for the week, especially fresh produce. They also have a great wine shop.

Coral Bay Restaurants: Eat at Sweet Plantains 3 times—they change their menu every 3rd day, so within a week you can sample all three menus. The atmosphere is relaxed and romantic; service is top-notch; the wine list is fantastic; and the food is truly amazing. Eating vegetarian was not at all a problem with the chef’s menu—my husband has been a vegetarian for over 40 years, and the only meat I eat is fish. The menu was perfect for us. The owners (also the chef and bartender) are very enterprising and talented people. If you are a couple seeking a quiet romantic dinner, in a funky open air setting, with nice music, a world class wine list, informative servers, and can afford to stay at Mooncottage, you deserve to eat at Sweet Plantains! We had one meal at Aqua Bistro, and it was crowded and very noisy, and there were a lot of families. The service was rushed and frantic, and when we asked a question about the wine list the server gruffly informed us that she didn’t drink and had no idea about wine. Would say this is a good place for families; a good bar area; but not so good for a quiet romantic dinner.

Rental Jeep: we rented with Dependable over on St. Thomas and would not do that again. While we didn’t have any mechanical problems, the jeep was a wreck with no sides and no way to keep anything in it safely while parked. And it leaked horribly during a bad rain storm. The next time we will rent on St. John.

Beaches: All of the nearby beaches were wonderful. Some were white sand and others were rocky (we actually enjoyed the rocky ones the best). And most of them on that part of the island were deserted or nearly so. Pack a lunch and water, and take off in the morning; spend a few hours exploring, swimming, snorkeling, and go back to Mooncottage for a skinny dip and relaxation prior to dinner. Don’t be deterred by the steep roads and curves; just take off and have an adventure!

Safety: We felt completely at ease on St. John, especially in the Coral Bay area. The local residents seemed friendly and at no time did we feel threatened. One incident did unfortunately occur: on our first morning we visited Salt Pond Bay Beach, and our lunch, water and about $50 in cash was taken out of our beach bag which was sitting in plain sight while we were snorkeling just a few feet away. There was a mom carrying an infant, with young teenagers, hanging out in the parking lot. They followed us down to the beach, had no beach gear, nor were they dressed for a beach outing, and walked past us on the beach. Since it was a family, we didn’t give it another thought. They apparently saw us unpacking, getting our snorkeling gear on, and going into the water and took advantage of that. Thankfully the culprits did not take our sunglasses, camera, jeep keys, my husband’s credit card, or driver’s license. So hopefully the lunch and bit of cash helped the family out. Don’t let this deter you from going as it was a lovely beach and this was probably just a freak happening. Leave anything of value back at Mooncottage.

Bugs: We had no problem whatsoever with any type of bugs. The night bugs can get a little noisy; if you are a light sleeper, take ear plugs.

Air conditioning: Absolutely not needed! The trade winds and the ceiling fans were perfect!

Cell Phone: we had no service but the internet worked great, enabling us to stay in touch with our family and office back home. We were happy that we had no phone service! You can always make calls on Mooncottage’s phone with a phone card.
