January day in deep snow. Walked across the nearby hills and aimed for 12 o' clock short break - but stayed 2 hours! Welcoming fires, staff and retriever persuaded our group to sample beer and chasers or soft drinks. Walk was voted 10 out of 10 - cosy pub contributed to the vote.

Just had one nights stay, will be going back again. We both had a great night and great food. Thanks to all the friendly staff, locals and customers. This is a a little gem of a place, the lovely open fire, in such a comfortable cosy room made it a great. Had a great nights sleep in such a warm comfortable bed, and a lovely hot shower in the morning. Breakfast set us up great for the day. Thankyou

Cosy country pub in a pretty Derbyshire location, ideal on a chilly day after a good walk. Food tasty but had been a little too near the grill and the deep fryer was turned up to high. Good range of beers.

very characterful little place-our room, while small was very clean-crisp white sheets and comfy bed. The atmosphere in the pub downstairs when we arrived in the afternoon was lovely, open fires, big sofas and sunday roasts, well used by locals at the time-unfortunately, apart from the breakfast which was excellent, we didn't get to sample any of the food as we had neglected to notice that no food was served on a Sunday night-in actual fact, nothing was served on Sunday night as the pub closes at 6pm, a fact that is rather embedded in the pub's own website and not immediately apparent on the site we booked on but an important consideration when our main ambition was to stay in a pub where we could sit back, relax and have a pint or two before tiptoeing up the stairs without having to drive anywhere again in the evening. All in all, it's a good location just outside the National park for exploring the Peak District and Matlock and Bakewell are within easy driving distance, the village is not massively picturesque but would be a great base for accessing amenities further afield. Will we be back? Probably not, but we will have a giggle about staying in a closed pub for some time to come and will carefully check where we book in future...would we recommend it? On any night other than a Sunday, i'm sure it's a great place to stay

As always you study the reivews, pay your money and take a chance on your accomodation.
We have just returned home and are already planning our next stay. If your looking for a big modern hotel with all the trimmings this is not for you but if you want a quaint, quirky village inn full of charm and character look no further. We were given room 4 on the top floor [probably because we were both under 5ft 8in] the ceiling sloped in this room but we soon got used to it. The room was good, nice comfortable bed and flat screen TV, very powerful shower in en suite and a view over the out buildings and local countryside.
Ok so they didn't make the beds or change the towels but feel sure they would have done if we had asked, it was not a problem for us. The breakfast we good and the meals excellent so we ate there both days of our stay. The pub is ideally situated to get out and explore the local sights of Matlock and beyond. So don't miss this little gem if you are looking for a inn run by really nice people who work hard to ensure you enjoy your stay. We had such a lovely time in Derbyshire the highlights being Matlock illuminations, Chatsworth farm shop, Massons Mill and of course the Jug and Glass.......... we will be back.

Room Tip: Beware of booking a top floor room if your tall as the ceiling slopes but you soon get the hang of i...

I have high standards so this might seem to be a harsh score. This a great B & B. Located just south of Matlock. No traffic noise and clean well equipped rooms. We had a warm welcome from the staff and the pub was very popular with locals. The food quality was good with a fair choice at a fair price and the real ale suited my partner. We would eat again here even if we were not staying in the area. There was live music on when we stayed. The location is great for walking and cycling without being totally off the beaten track if you want to reach the more livlier Matlock. It is ideal for a short break. If i had a crtisim it was the roll together bed and the room was small. It was good value for money and like I say it was clean with ample room to park the car.
