“Hurrah, a proper pub!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 May 2014

This is a lovely old pub that has recently been taken over by Erika and she is doing a great job. From curry evenings to Saturday breakfast, live music and quiz nights - the Talbot is a real asset to this beautiful village and we have been several times now for lunch and supper. On every occasion the food has been lovely, and the welcome very warm. Can't wait for summer to see what else she has planned!

We had been fans of the previous pub run by Erika Watts so when we heard she was moving to take over the bigger pub and hotel of the Talbot we decided to go to visit. Once again she proves what a great landlady she is. A proper Dorset pub with proper food and a proper welcome. Decent country pubs like this are waning. It looks like this one will be staying strong with her at the helm.

Recently stayed at the wonderful Talbot Hotel and what a delightful experience. Set in the most idyllic village, and so close to Shaftesbury and Blandford Forum. An ideal place to stay for a few days and to explore the local area. Our room was really well appointed with a large bathroom with a great bath to relax in with the super toiletries. Dinner was superb with local produce and an excellent choice at a very reasonable cost. Breakfast was delicious with every combination of goodies that you could ever ask for, including yummy preserves made by the wonderful Erika. On talking to some of the locals, all said how delighted they were that Erika has brought her own unique touch to the pub and they are so pleased that they have somewhere to go and relax with just a pint if they want or to have a great meal with friends. Yes, we will definitely be going back. Thank you Erika and Staff.

I met up with friends this weekend and we stayed at The Talbot for the first time. WE had a wonderful time. The Talbot is beautifully situated in a very picturesque village, but also very close to Shaftsbury. The bedrooms were very confortable, with a lovely en suite offering fluffy white towels and very nice toiletries. There was also a plentiful supply of tea, coffee etc. A very nice touch was the homemade lavender shortbread homemade by Erika the landlady !
We all eat in the The Talbot in the evening and there was a very varied menu usiing lots of local produce. The food was fabulous. We shall definitly be going back there, actually in November ! Erika was very welcoming and the whole experience added to a very enjoyable friends reunion !

Room Tip: All the rooms were lovely.

We had a very warm welcome and our stay was wonderful! This bed and breakfast has a lovely English countryside character and really attentive staff. It is a good location (easy to get to but quiet at the same time). The food is also great and always fresh and well presented, a thing you don't always get with pub around this area. It is also a bit cheaper than other pubs and b&bs around this area. If I will ever pass by I will definitely stop for lunch or a drink again.

My husband and I stayed here whilst attending a wedding in the local area and were extremely impressed. The staff were extremely accommodating, allowing us an early check in to get changed, as well as helping us with directions. The room we had (melbury) was spacious and clean and the cooked breakfast and fresh fruit buffet were excellent. We would definitely stay here again.

We stayed for three nights to attend our friends' wedding in Stourpaine and to spend some additional time in Dorset afterwards. The location was recommended by our friends, we had a look at The Talbot's website before, and our positive expectations were more than met. A warm welcome, a very nice and absolutely clean room, friendly staff, a wide choice for cooked breakfast, off-street parking, and a great dinner on Saturday. Although our room was above the pub and facing the street we had a good sleep, as the traffic ceases during the night and you don't hear much of the odd car on the first floor. The few noises from the bar were not disturbing at all, at around 11PM everything was completely quiet.

Breakfast buffet was not overwhelming, but OK with some nice fresh fruit and local specialties in the honey-and-jam section. The cooked breakfast was fine, with a good selection of all the classical English Breakfast ingredients, served freshly cooked and hot and not microwaved.

Saturday's dinner was excellent, we had lamb shank with rosemary-redcurrant-red-wine sauce, and braised lamb shoulder with mint sauce and mashed potatoes with black pudding. We got some carrots, green beans and red cabbage to share, and nothing to complain about those as well. Dessert was warm chocolate toffee cake with coconut ice cream - delicious. Everything accompanied by a bottle of El Coto Gold Edition for a fair price. OK, all in all it was not cheap, but compared to what you get in Hamburg for the same amount of money, it was really good value.

If we come to Dorset again and can't stay with our friends for some reason, we will definitely choose The Talbot again.

Room Tip: Rooms are on first floor, either to the street or to the backyard, where the pub's garden is loc...
