Went to this pub for Sunday lunch. Great winter spot with huge open fireplace. Meals were typical pub type food - parma, fish & chips, roast of the day, pies. Lots of quirky decorations. Very much a family atmosphere, relaxed and casual.

Greeted by the owner (I presume) and welcomed, taken to our table, menu explained etc. service was fine for a long weekend. Meals took a bit of time to come out, but we had nice beer to bide our time. Food was good, no complaints. Will revisit for sure.

We drove up to Mount Dandenongs for lunch on this Queen's birthday Monday but forgot to book for lunch. I wanted to try this place out as I read reviews on Tripadvisor before hand but my son wanted the "Pie in the Sky" instead. However, the crowds and jam-packed traffic near Olinda township made it near impossible to stop at the "Pie" as it was already about 1.30pm. Hence I drove on to my choice instead! We managed to find a neat parking right in front of this tavern and walked in without booking and was told we have to wait for 15 to 20 minutes in a waiting list. We chose to wait and were accommodated by their friendly staff to wait at the heated outdoor area, and they will let us in once a table is available. We ordered our drinks and while waiting seeping our drink for about 10 minutes, we were ushered into the warm main dining area.
As a couple and two adult children, we ordered the following among the 4 of us:
*Grilled flathead tails over a lemon & pea risotto with prawns poached in a champagne cream sauce.
*Chicken Involtini - Chicken breast stuffed with fetta, spinach & ham served on a vegetable capotina & topped with polenta cakes & jus
*Slow roasted pork belly served atop bubble and squeak , creamy mash with wilted rocquet, chilli jam & jus.
*Steak, Potato & Guinness Pie - Homemade steak pie cooked with potatoes, bacon and beer topped with puff pastry and served with fat chips.

The mains and entrees arrived promptly and in generous portion reminiscent of pub food in England. We all liked every dish we ordered and enjoyed the drink choices too.

We will not hesitate to bring other friends to eat at this place. Good food with reasonable prices and a good atmosphere.

My wife and I visited the Pig and Whistle for Sunday lunch. We arrived early around 11:45 and they did not open until 12:00. However this was an excellent start to our visit as we had our choice of tables in from of the open fire and as it turned out lucky as it quickly filled up and fire side tables became a premium.
We decided to try the "famous" Pig and Whistle Pies and were not disappointed. Oh and I would also the Big Pig Pale Ale.
Great venue, food very good, terrific view, service was OK. Make sure you book on the weekend or turn up early.
