Be sure to ask about the 20% gratuity before checking into this room. In addition to bed tax, be prepared for a 30% addition to your room rate. THis was very dissappointing considering that the staff did not go above and beyond to earn this gratuity. :(

My wife and I spent four relaxing days at the Ballard Inn to celebrate our anniversary. We found that the other opinions expressed in this forum are still valid.

We stayed three nights in the Fiesta Room and one night in the Wildflower Room. Both are very nice, but we personally feel that the Wildflower room is the better choice. Both rooms are set apart from the main rooms in the inn and provide a little more privacy and easy access for the physically disabled.

The inn had changed hands just prior to our arrival. We met the new chef and his wife, who are apparently part owners. Naturally, they have made some changes to the menu which haven't been reflected on their website. The meals were excellent with beautiful presentation. Although dinner was certainly filling, the portions were smaller than expected.

I found very little room for improvement to this absolute charmer.

Stayed here after spending the first part of our weekend in S.B. as an anniversary getaway. Inn was beautiful and staff was especially nice, but not quite sure why there was an automatic 10% gratuity charge for extra service. The only extra we got was a bed turndown and cookies at the bedside. Nothing special was done for our Anniversary, even though staff was aware. Room was clean, cozy and romantic, but white towels looked grayed and frayed. Great breakfast and once again, super staff.
I will stay in Santa Ynez next time...

The Ballard Inn is the BEST B&B my husband and I have ever stayed in. Minutes out of Solvang and minutes from local wineries, you're close to everything and yet away from the hustle and bustle. The Inn is set on a beautiful country road. The rooms are spacious and homey. Each has a theme and the rooms are left open when unoccupied so you can see what there is to choose from. The staff is terrific; very personable and attentive to your every need. Breakfast in the charming dining area is made to order and there's no shortage of delicious food. The coffee served at the Inn is delicious! I spent several pleasant hours reading in a rocking chair on the sunny porch. Birds chirped, a breeze reminded me that the beautiful flowers were in bloom everywhere, and time floated by. In the late afternoon we tasted wine in the "living room" and helped ourselves to a variety of freshly prepared appetizers. There was a game closet where we could pick out board games or cards to play in the salon or up in our room. We stayed in the Jarado Room (inspired by the art of the Chumash Indians) and the Figueroa Room (I dub it the garden sun room). Both were delightful. We peeked into the Western Room (beautiful quilt and fireplace) and the Vineyard Room (furniture made from twigs).Cookies await you when you return to your room in the evening and the bed is turned down. And unlike most conventional hotels, the central air/heat in the room is overhead and barely audible. And yes, there's even a vent into the bathroom! What a treat! I can't say enough good things about the Ballard Inn. We can't wait to go back!WARNING - If you're a "type A" personality who needs something going constantly and you're not happy unless the TV is blaring, please stay away from the Ballard Inn! Let those of us enjoy the serenity continue to enjoy the slow pace of this beautiful Inn. :)

My husband and I stayed in this beautiful Inn last year right after 9/11. We booked the room after we heard about a vacation getaway package that was offered through Elmer Dill. Each room has a theme. They are tastefully decorated and our room had a fireplace. The room came with a bottle of local wine and chocolate chip cookies on your pillow when they turn down your sheets at bedtime. Our package came with a scrumptious dinner in their very inviting dining area and a delicious full breakfast the next morning. The Inn staff was most accomodating and friendly. The package also included two tasting room tickets for a local winery and two tickets for tasting at a local brewery. It was very peaceful and quiet. We will definintely be going back.
