“Brilliant place to stay - excellent room, staff and food,”
Reviewed 25 July 2010

After walking the W Highland Way this was a marvellous place to end up and celebrate. Although a couple of miles from F William, well worth the cost of the taxi ride to get to and fro. We stayed a couple of nights, walking up Ben Nevis during the day. The room was very spacious and clean, the staff very friendly and helpful, and the food excellent. A really interesting location too, right next to all the locks at the end of the Caledonian Canal.

We tried to dine here during our sailing holiday on the Caledonian Canal. We were sitting at a table outside as we had our dog with us, but were told we couldn't eat there as staff could not bring food out to us. We then asked if there was anywhere inside where we could eat, but were told this was also not possible. The place did look rather busy, hence the rather "take it or leave it" attitude of the lady behind the bar.
A local couple directed us to The Lochy pub, further down the canal and on the opposite side, where the staff were friendly and welcoming, the food was nice and reasonably priced and we were given the choice of either dining in the public bar area or outside.

We moved to the Moorings after having a problem at another hotel near Lochailart. The first thing to say is that we are no strangers to the Moorings having visited for meals on and off for over 6 years. It has always been good quality. This was the first time we have stayed overnight though. After our problems we aimed for the Moorings as a bit of a ‘bolt hole’
We hadn’t booked and just turned up at 7 in the evening. They only had one room left which was a premiere deluxe and we were offered it at a reduced rate.
The room was outstanding with a great view of Ben Nevis and Neptune’s Staircase. (room 24)

Our problem at our previous hotel required a visit from the Police and the hotel staff were very professional in their manner and handling of this. They arranged a quiet spot for us to be interviewed in and held a table beyond last dining room orders. Once that was dealt with we had the most sumptuous meal. It was fine dining at its best with great service and flavours. Top marks to the chef.

Overall a fantastic stay which enabled us to recharge our batteries and continue our Highland tour. We are back in Fort William in September so will be back for another visit.

One footnote to mention is that all this quality and service does come with a price so don’t expect a bargain. You get what you pay for and we thought it was good value. We were not on a budget so it didn’t matter but I think for meals, the pub is cheaper if you are on a budget.

Thoroughly enjoyed a two night stay in the Moorings. As other reviewers have said, the view of Ben Nevis and of Neptunes Staircase was superb. Our room was very comfortable with some thoughtful extras such as the bottled water. The breakfast - YUM! So good! We ate in the hotel and really enjoyed the food - the burger was quite a plateful, perfect after a day's walking!
The staff were very polite and friendly and we will definitely be back.

A beautifully situated, comfortable and well run hotel. Highly recommended (esp. Room 9, with amazing view of Neptune's Steps and Ben Nevis).

Had a 10% discount voucher from our accommodation so ate at The Moorings on our last night in Banavie. With the voucher it was good value and the food was portioned well and tasty. Would suggest that more of the main courses are served with a side order of vegetables for the cost.

Perfect hotel to use as a base for exploring the hills and hiking Ben Nevis. The staff were excellent and they all looked after us very well. We've just got back and we're already planning our next visit!

On behalf of the staff and management of the Moorings Hotel I would like to say a big thank you for your kind review on Tripadvisor, so often on review sites it is only the people who wish to complain that will take the time to offer a review. We always try hard to make our guests feel welcome and to ensure they have an enjoyable stay at our hotel, we would be delighted to welcome you back if you should be in the Highlands again.
