We have been to many functions at this place over the years – wedding receptions and so on, and have eaten there several times over the years too. We decided to have an evening meal here one evening, back in May this year, and with wine, it cost around £65 for the two of us, for an excellent 3 course meal, with a complimentary amuse-bouche, and sorbet as well. A couple of glasses of house wine were also included in that price.
The hotel is run by the local council, mainly as a function venue, hosting conferences, weddings and the like, but we found out during that visit in May that they also have a “mid-week offer” which includes bed, breakfast and the evening meal for 2 at a total cost (ex drinks) of £32.50 per person - £65 in all! That really compared well with the previous visit! We tried it out in August and were certainly not disappointed. It meant that we could wine and dine without me having to abstain because of the drive home! We had what was amusingly described by one of the staff as the “Hobbit Room”, Room 9, which was comfortable enough but quite cramped headroom-wise. The food was excellent again, with quite an interesting menu, and exceptional value.
This month then, January, was our second over-night excursion there, and, once again, we had a great meal, and Room 8 which had more head-room! They have now refurbished and redecorated most of the rooms in the hotel, and we were most impressed with the cleanliness of the place. Unfortunately, there were only two other people staying there this particular night – well, unfortunately for the Hotel I should say, because it deserves much, much greater patronage. No doubt, once their pending new advertising campaign has taken off, they will be full!
As for our meal, again we were genuinely impressed at the quality, and certainly the quantity. Some previous correspondent complained about the small portions of food? I just have to disagree! We both had the same main course – two large cuts of rib-eye steak each, cooked exactly to our liking, and accompanied by fries, and a great assortment of vegetables. Needless to say, it beat both of us, but we managed a bit of room for the sweet – the signature “Bryngarw Trio” – not to be missed!
I must also mention the staff here, in particular, Chris, who doubled up that evening as waiter, barman and receptionist (because of the very small numbers!) He was truly professional. Thank you Chris!
To conclude, we would recommend this place for a night’s stay, or longer if you want to savour the beautiful countryside walks in the area. Make sure you don’t have too much to eat before your visit though!
