Bryngarw House
Reviewed 23 January 2014

We have been to many functions at this place over the years – wedding receptions and so on, and have eaten there several times over the years too. We decided to have an evening meal here one evening, back in May this year, and with wine, it cost around £65 for the two of us, for an excellent 3 course meal, with a complimentary amuse-bouche, and sorbet as well. A couple of glasses of house wine were also included in that price.

The hotel is run by the local council, mainly as a function venue, hosting conferences, weddings and the like, but we found out during that visit in May that they also have a “mid-week offer” which includes bed, breakfast and the evening meal for 2 at a total cost (ex drinks) of £32.50 per person - £65 in all! That really compared well with the previous visit! We tried it out in August and were certainly not disappointed. It meant that we could wine and dine without me having to abstain because of the drive home! We had what was amusingly described by one of the staff as the “Hobbit Room”, Room 9, which was comfortable enough but quite cramped headroom-wise. The food was excellent again, with quite an interesting menu, and exceptional value.

This month then, January, was our second over-night excursion there, and, once again, we had a great meal, and Room 8 which had more head-room! They have now refurbished and redecorated most of the rooms in the hotel, and we were most impressed with the cleanliness of the place. Unfortunately, there were only two other people staying there this particular night – well, unfortunately for the Hotel I should say, because it deserves much, much greater patronage. No doubt, once their pending new advertising campaign has taken off, they will be full!

As for our meal, again we were genuinely impressed at the quality, and certainly the quantity. Some previous correspondent complained about the small portions of food? I just have to disagree! We both had the same main course – two large cuts of rib-eye steak each, cooked exactly to our liking, and accompanied by fries, and a great assortment of vegetables. Needless to say, it beat both of us, but we managed a bit of room for the sweet – the signature “Bryngarw Trio” – not to be missed!

I must also mention the staff here, in particular, Chris, who doubled up that evening as waiter, barman and receptionist (because of the very small numbers!) He was truly professional. Thank you Chris!

To conclude, we would recommend this place for a night’s stay, or longer if you want to savour the beautiful countryside walks in the area. Make sure you don’t have too much to eat before your visit though!

Room Tip: Room 8 is tiny, but cosy.

We would like to thank Bryngarw House and its staff for an excellent wedding reception this autumn. The location is great and if the weather is kind the grounds are a wonderful bonus. We had a marquee linked to main building which worked out very well. The buffet / carvery meal was good quality and plentiful.

We stayed before and after the wedding. The conservatory / dining room was very good. We enjoyed the evening dinner and the breakfast would set you up for the day. There are a number of nooks and crannies in the hotel to read or have a quiet chat.

The hotel could do with a facelift while retaining its quaint, welcoming feel. The grounds were very nice. The flower beds around the hotel were pretty but needed a bit of weeding.

All in all we were very pleased.

We have been coming here for years and came back for the first time in a few years this weekend, food still wonderful, service very friendly, not rushed and excellent value.
I agree with te comments that it could do with a little updating decor wise, but still clean and in good condition.

Great food, give it a try.

We visit regularly but lately it has improved again! Complimentary extras between courses and delicious bread. Portions are not huge but you'll struggle to finish if you have a wonderful trio of desserts. Coffee also comes with unusual, absolutely delicious petit fours. Difficult to get a table on weekends so book in advance. Perfect for celebration meals.

the hotel itself, although a little jaded, was quite nice and the room we had was enough for the 1 night. pleaty of towels and tolietries, plenty of tea/coffee etc plus if you ran out the staff were more than happy to restock it. The bed I found comfortable which is unusual for me and I did sleep well plus the breakfast in the morning was good (could have done with a spoonful of hot beans) but there was a good selection of cerials and breakfasts with an excellent pot of coffee to wake you up.
The one draw back we found was while the hotel was pretty good in that aspect,we were attending a wedding and during the buffet they ran out of food and then plates. Some guests ended up eating whatever was left of the buffet from tea plates, again when the desserts were brought out they ran out of tea plates so they had the profiteroles and chocolate fondants from serviettes. What I fail to understand is they knew how many guests there were so they should have had that number plus a couple more plates of both sizes available. The buffet itself was nothing to shout about but the desserts were good however I have seen the same desserts in several places so they are not "home made" they are all out of a box. Apart from a few boiled new potatoes everything else came from boxes or packets and just had to be plated for serving. Hence the 2 halves to this place.
The area surrounding the hotel is a park and there is a duck pond with a variety of wildlife on it and surrounding it. In the evening I noticed a badger wandering through, heard a fox trying his luck and saw a fair sized rat running across the path and through the shrubbery. There was also a wasps nest around the side of the building but it didn't cause much of a problem. About 6:30am there was a fairly large heron on the pond looking for his breakfast plus a good selection of smaller birds to keep you interested. I'm normally awake quite early and when in a different place I like to view it without the disturbances you get from other people as there is always more to see.

Room Tip: room 2 was relatively quiet although it did look out over the back yard and wedding marquee so there...
