“So glad we found Birchwood”
Reviewed 25 June 2013

We were so lucky to find Birchwood in the B&B directory and reserve 2 rooms for 2 nights (we added another night). We felt welcome in Tom’s beautiful farmhouse and lovely grounds. Our roomy, en suite bedrooms offered everything we needed, including a spectacular view of the hills. Tom prepared perfect breakfasts of our choice, and he recommended sightseeing destinations that we would have missed on our own. The nearby village of Kenmare has lots of interesting shops and restaurants, and a helpful tourist information center.

I stayed here with my friend when we were visiting Ireland in June 2012. We decided to drive the ring of kerry so wanted somewhere enroute.

When we arrived Tom couldn't have been more welcoming, he showed us to the living room and advised us to make ourselves at home. He then showed us to our room which was so comfortable I could have taken my bed home with me.

On our first night we were welcomed home to a few drinks in the living room with the other guests we felt very welcome and nothing was too much trouble for Tom.

Tom advised us of the best areas to visit and recommended a drive along side some mountains which ended up being the highlight of our week in Ireland.

He keeps the house and ground perfectly clean and tidy, there is nothing more he could do to make you feel at home whilst staying here. I would highly recommend this B&B to anyone visiting the local area.

What a relaxing and beautiful place to stay. Tom was a gracious and kind host. This is the perfect location for visiting Kenmare, and the ring of Kerry. We stayed three nights and really enjoyed visiting with the other guests and Tom. The brown bread here was our favorite!

When we decided to do the Ring of Kerry day tour, my husband looked online to find accommodation in a centralised locality. Birchwood in Kigarvan was our choice - and the stay was perfect in every way. Tom and Mary were kind enough to answer all our concerns about travelling etc before hand, so that by the time we got to meet them, we felt right at home. And what a wonderful home it turned out to be. We had a spacious room upstairs which faced east - the most comfortable of beds and a stunning view over the gently rolling hills in the distance. After a long day's travel we were able to relax in Tom's sunroom with all sorts of interesting books and pamphlets on the area which we could read at our leisure. Breakfasts are really something special at Birchwood, with the meal being taken in a light and airy room with a beautiful view. The long diningroom table was covered with a white linen table cloth - and I loved the olde world ambience of the silver and the crystal! Tasty jams, a good selection of cheeses, and a huge variety of breakfast cereals was available as well as some homemade soda bread and fruit loaf. The cooked breakfasts were to die for and I think Tom should set up a training school for helpless husbands so they can impress their wives!!!!My only gripe is that time went by so quickly - and my advice is for anyone contemplating doing the Ring of Kerry is to skip looking for B&B's in the towns and opt for a country alternative. Birchwood gets my vote - again and again!

The proprietor Tom was the perfect host. He kindly dropped us in to the village to the pubs which were great fun - and had super traditional music. The breakfast table was laid beautifully with white linens and the scrambled egg was just perfectly cooked as was everything else our friends had. Homemade brown bread, teacake and real butter on the table. The bedrooms are spacious, clean and the mattress one of the most comfortable we've experienced staying away. The house is in a quiet area and I slept better than I ever do. Great value too. This was the 2nd time our friends had been and we will definitely go back. Kenmare is only a few miles away and Bantry, Clonakilty, Bandon are all within driving distance.

This was our first trip to Ireland and we wanted a central location to enjoy Cork and Kerry County. Tom and Mary are terrific hosts and run an outstanding operation. We had a double and a single room. Both were very comfortable and clean. The mattress and bedding is of high quality and a real pleasure to sleep in. The double also had a small twin inside, which would be fine for a child. The room is spacious enough for three.

Tom is a master at breakfast and there was plenty of variety. The B&B is easy to get to and perfect base for sightseeing. It is also very close to Kenmare where you can take a quick drive into town and eat at many decent restaurants.
