“Merri Creek to avoid traffic”
Review of Merri Creek Trail

Merri Creek Trail
Reviewed 18 July 2012

I used to use the track regularly to cycle to work from home in North Fitzroy to get to work in Richmond. It's a great way to avoid the hustle & bustle of the city traffic & although not demanding a good form of exercise. There are many interesting things along the way & if you go all the way to the city joining the River Yarra it's very picturesque. It's not unusual to see the odd snake so certain times of the year keep out of the long grass !

Melbourne’s Merri Creek Trail is a 23 km paved path for bicycles and pedestrians. The northern end meets the Western Metropolitan Ring Rd Trail in Campbellfield and the Southern end meets the Yarra River Trail near Dwight’s Falls, Collingwood. I have cycled along this trail many times and found it to be a safe easy riding path used by commuter and recreational bike riders. It can be used as a link path joining the Capital City Trail, Yarra River Trail, Western Ring Road Trail and the Galada Tamboore Trail which goes to Craigieburn. Convenient access points are the Rushall train station, Coburg Lake or CERES Environmental Park which is also an excellent refreshment stop.

This combined walking and bicycle trail extends north for about 20 kilometres from Dights Falls on the Yarra River at Abbotsford, where it junctions with the Capital City Trail.

I walked most of it recently with the section closer to the city being the most enjoyable.

While works on the Clifton Hill rail duplication project have resulted in some diversions in this trail's lower section, it remains scenic.

Some areas have been revegetated, and have an abundance of Australian native flora.

Most cyclists seem to respect pedestrians. Try not to constantly switch from side to side as some bikes can come from behind with little warning.

If you get tired both the Epping rail line, with stations about every 1.5 kilometres, or a tram line are nearby to take you back southwest to Melbourne's CBD.
