“Really OTT, but in a nice way.”
Reviewed 4 June 2014

We arrived to find hundreds of beautifully dressed adults and children milling around yelling at the tops of their voices. We immediately resigned ourselves to a sleepless night but our nice, friendly receptionist reassured us that they would all be gone by 10pm. And they were. This wasn't a drunken wedding, it was several posh first communion parties, giving little Laura, Adriana and others a day to remember. We peeked into the dining room where they were going to have their celebratory dinner. It was a huge converted church with beautiful stained glass windows and the altar converted into a stage! The table settings were amazing. And now for the decoration of the public areas: Ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece meet Versailles, the Far East and everywhere and every time inbetween. Hugely entertained, we loved it. Yes, its obviously fake but the owner was sincere in wanting to spend his millions on something stunningly different and he has done just that. And now to our room: it was really spacious with very high ceilings and restful decor, an enormous, very comfortable bed which gave us the best sleep of our holiday so far, two big armchairs, a desk, two tables, a fridge. The bathroom was huge with lots of surfaces to put our things on, fabulous quality towels and a spa bath. A really good breakfast, presented by efficient staff, was included in our deal. Before we left, we walked round the 'Graeco-Roman Temple' gardens and they were delightful. Pillars, friezes, frescos, busts, statues, colourful bedding plants... all very peaceful with only the sounds of the swallows as they darted around. Would definitely come back to repeat this unique experience.

This hotel almost creates a surrealistic experience. It is renovated, really enormous, monastry in the "middle of nowhere", but every aspect of the renovation is fake: the paintings, the furniture, the chandeliers, the ceilings. The outside redecoration of the huge building demonstrates a complete lack of good taste. The rooms though are big, clean and very comfortable and the breakfast is absolutely superior. There is a large garden. A recommended place to stay, if alone for the very special atmosphere. The town of Zamora is some 15 km away. The staff did their best but made a somewhat weary impression. All in all good value for money.

We took a chance booking this for one night - worrying that it would be out of the way, hard to find and a poor choice. While the first two are true, the choice turned out to be incredible and we stayed for three nights. This was the best experience on our entire trip - and we stayed in many 4 & 5 start hotels during our three week exploration of Spain. The hotel is a work of art, the staff were like angels, the food was fantastic, the bed was heavenly and the spa and spa services were incredible. The hotel even makes great wine!
We came to the region to taste the increasingly popular wines from the Toro wine region with dozens of wineries (bodegas) located within a few miles of Zamora. We loved exploring both Zamora and the small town of Toro. Make no mistake, the hotel is hard to find. We rented a car and speak little Spanish, so if you are more fluent, you may have an easier time. The town of Coreses is very, very small, so having a car is quite necessary. The hotel was extremely enjoyable. At first, I was a little miffed that we had to pay to use the "pool", but after experiencing the spa services associated with the "spa pool" (massage, pedicure, ect.), we actually wound up thinking it was a wonderful deal and well worth it. The hotel has an informal bar/lunch restaurant and a formal dining restaurant. We ate a pleasant simple lunch at the bar and when the barman (Javier) found out we loved Toro wines, he prepared a formal tasting of all the wines that the hotel produced. The red wines were really quite good and an incredible bargain. We ate at the dining room twice and it was the best food on our trip. Our waiter was fantastic (my wife said he reminded her of George Clooney). They allowed us to split dinners which included a bottle of wine, appetizers, main course and dessert - all of which were absolutely top of the line!
All this said, the best parts were the furnishings of the public areas and the rooms. Our room had a seperate living room and the bedroom was a four poster canapy bed - very comfortable! The lobby, dining rooms and other areas were furnished with very good taste and an extremely open checkbook. While the outside of the hotel is simple, the location and views are very peaceful and relaxing. The swallows have been allowed to nest in the eaves and their singing adds to the ambiance.
When we left we just looked at each other and laughed - "Can you believe what we just experienced?"
Kudos to all the staff from the maids, clerks, waiters, to the manager and owners. You have a very, very special property. When we return to Spain, we will make Hotel Spa Convento a major part of our visit again.

Room Tip: Try for a suite, high floor. You may have better luck mid-week as the hotel is a wedding destination...
