“A really good pub lunch”
Reviewed 2 May 2014

We were walking Offas Dyke and this pub was just right for our lunchtime stop. We were joined by our family and it really couldn't have been better. The landlord was brilliant. Moving tables and chairs, finding a high chair and chatting to the children so they felt important. Wished we could have stayed longer, but we had to get on!
We ordered simple lunch food -baguettes, plough mans and sausage and chips but it was all perfect. There was a very large party having a sit down lunch and they all seemed very happy with their food. So I can only think this would be a good place to stay when walking the Dyke.

we had booked in after a recomendation from a friend who had stayed there before and thank goodness we didnt go by a coment from Carolyn R's review because of her we nearly didnt book BUT thank goodness we did. when we arrived we had a lovely warm welcome. the food was execellent, and as for her comment on the wine it was outstanding we were given a choice from the wine cabinet which included several to choose from including, chateauneuf de pape,at a really resonable price of £17.50 and if you know your wines which she obviously dosn't, because this was also excellant good value.the room we had was cosy and was lovely and clean not a speck of dust. i go on about this lovely little place because people are so quick to criticize and just one comment can make such a differance and in this current climate we need peope to give good coments where justified i will be recomending this to my family and friends from hear and canada

We stayed here on our Offa's Dyke walk and booked in to eat an evening meal. There was a limited menu and not enough portions of our chosen meal but the real shocker was the wine. You take pot luck and pay £17.50, whatever the wine. Seriously overpriced.
No TV in the room.

I have a confession: I didn't end up staying here, but I wanted to review it positively because the hosts were so charming. I was enquiring, and needed wi-fi for work during my stay - and I was escaping another, very poor, B&B. I chose to stay in another guesthouse with wi-fi throughout - which the Royal Oak does not have - but the hosts at the Royal Oak were clearly outstanding and went the extra mile to try to accommodate me at exceptionally short notice.

A big thank you to them, and a big good luck.

We stayed for one night when doing the Offa's Dyke path. We had a very friendly welcome with some much needed sandwiches for a late lunch. The room was comfortable and although not en suite we had our own excellent bathroom facilities. Both the evening meal and breakfast were delicious. A lovely, traditional well run pub.
