Avignon was the third stop of our honeymoon through France and Italy. When we arrived we were pretty tired after a busy week and a half exploring Paris and Lyon.

The hotel has a gorgeous sunny pool and indoor pool and spa plus a beautiful garden restaurant. Though we had planned to spend our time exploring the areas nearby we instead spent our visit swimming, getting massages and eating the beautiful food. We did visit Avignon one morning which was lovely (though a longish drive away).

I would give the hotel 5 points but do feel the experience wasn't as good as at some of our other hotels of a lower price range.

Very nice place but pretty far removed from Avignon as others have mentioned. The hotel staff were very helpful and room was HUGE - we couldn't believe how big it was. Pontet is not a great suburb of Avignon with much going on and is in a bit of a suspect neighborhood. You can't walk to anything so you are pretty much stuck having to eat at the hotel which is very expensive (but good as others have said) or drive into the city which in small French cities can be very tricky. My husband and I are in our early 30s and we felt like we were the youngest guests by about 20 years!

Room Tip: Breakfast is not included (common in other French hotels) and is very expensive.

This is a beautiful hotel and a great base for touring the surrounding area. When we arrived, we were informed we had been upgraded to a deluxe room which was fabulous. The staff are very friendly and helpful (other than one quite rude waiter/host in the restaurant). We ate in the restaurant on one night and the meal itself was flawless. The only negative comments I would have are as follows: (i) the location is absolutely fine if you have a car but if you do not, it would be very inconvenient; and (ii) it is VERY expensive - a bottle of beer in the bar approx 9 euro, a glass of wine 11 euro.

What a surprise! We arrived in a rather dull concrete village near Avignon and tucked away down a small road was the entrance to the Auberge. Once inside (easy parking) we were met by four people at Reception, who were friendly and helpful, particularly as my Husband is disabled. In fact they could not have done more to look after us and check we were happy. We were taken to a room set in the garden (there are lots of these) with a peaceful terrace. The room was beautifully decorated and the bathroom was superb with a jacuzzi bath and separate luxury shower. Top quality towels and bathroom items. Plus an espresso machine, which was topped up daily - a bit of an art form to learn its ways, but lovely coffee/tea (no milk supplied unless you ask). There is an outdoor pool and lovely terrace, a good walk from the accommodation. But there are loads of rooms near the pool, if you like. Plus there is a spa with fantastic indoor pool, with 2 jacuzzis and current, together with a sauna and hammam. The treatments available were extremely expensive and very few people seemed to book them. Our room was just near the restaurant and we noticed that lots of people had room service, if they had a terrace. The hotel and restaurant are expensive, this is 5-star so the costs are to be expected, However, the quality is all around you, the food was very interesting and generous, particularly if you have half board, dinner was 5 courses, plus lots of extras. If the weather is fine, you eat on the restaurant terrace and are surrounded by masses of beautiful trees, shrubs and gardens. The service was immaculate, very relaxed and friendly, but informative too - we were very impressed generally.

Room Tip: In the day the only sound to disturb is a nearby school, so rooms in the hotel and the west side are...

wonderful staff, superb dining, quaint but comfy rooms, updated plumbing very nice indeed - but yes, as others have mentioned, you do feel somewhat stuck here (there is a half hour bus ride into Avignon that comes every half hour to a stop about 100 yards from the entrance). Being stuck you are perforce forced to endure the wonderful haute cuisine - but absorb the very dear prices - even room service - if you just want something light - you'll still feel it in your pocketbook - a tasty yet a bit stingy cold cut plate comes to 25 bucks US - and all you really wanted was a 5 buck pannini (which you can find in the small town about 1/4 mile away). The grounds are well kept and the spa very relaxing. Oh, and if you are wanting that 5 star gastonomic experience, you won't be disappointed, chef fully deserves his star status.

Two day weekend to visit Avignon and we thought the Auberge de Cassagne would be a good place to base our 'operations' from.

The things we liked:
The fact that this hotel has an indoor and one outdoor pool- we didn't find ANY good hotel in the area around that had a pool.
The restaurant at the hotel which is on a charming inside courtyard- very romantic/pleasant meal after a 4hour drive from Switzerland (parking of the hotel has Spaniards, Swiss, Germans, Belgians, French and the cars were def a little more on the 'premium' scale which is always fun to check out....DB9 ragtop took first place.)
Upon confirmation (by phone) the night before, I was informed that I would be upgraded rooms- so we walked in with a smile. The mix-up on check-in and the fruit platter to say 'sorry' was appreciated- and a good sign of a willingness to keep us happy.
Also fun is the multitude of 'thank you' notes from previous more and less famous guests who have enjoyed the hospitality of the Auberge.....music stars, government ministers, movie stars etc.
Breakfast was very pleasant- we opted to have our served in our room on a charming balcony- with my choice of newspaper (IHT) nice plus (at 25Euros it aint cheap...but again...what was served was good).
Quality and clean linens and towels (lots of them in the room- for the pool too)
Comfy bathrobes.

So where were the niggles?
The bed was two mattresses joined together....and these were (sadly) I could feel the depression in the middle of my bed....even if the room was quiet and we slept well.
The TV cabling was not built into the wall....I know...I sound like a fascist....but what I'm trying to say is that if you start looking very closely, you realize this 'local' 4 star....not some big chain....and there is a bit of a 'handyman' feel on certain little points.

These people do it themselves. In many ways you feel the charm, in other cases you see the limitations.

The outdoor pool lining could be felt underfoot occasionally and the jacuzzi was not hot.
Food at the restaurant was good particularly if you've just gotten off the road. However, if you know your way around Avignon (speak some French and have done some research), I'd suggest checking out the joints in town.

FREE TIP- If you are using TA for restaurants in Avignon- avoid the ENGLISH reviews....find the French ones (and get some translation help)...that's where the food is good- Avignon is FULL of traps. Also feel free to check out two of my discoveries of which one was well worth the drive to town.

To get back to the hotel- if you start to scratch you'll find little issues in several places. That said, with no other nice hotel with a pool and in a pleasant pastoral setting close to Avignon (yes you must have a car)....and the fact that this a place run by three couples and their staff who've given their all to make this a comfy and premium experience, I'll give them a nod.

I'd stay again and recommend.

This hotel was indeed 5 star but that also meant 5 star prices. Water was 6.90 euro and the food in the restaurant was also very expensive . Kids enjoyed both the indoor and outdoor pools and the grounds were well maintained. The only issue I had with this hotel was the location. Without a car you felt stuck. You had to walk to Le Pontet then get a bus to Avignon and at night with two children I ended up getting a cab back which got quite expensive. With a car this place would have been lovely.Best thing I did was book a tour of Provonce which meant that the mini bus collected us straight from the hotel. Staff were very pleasant and helpful but think carefully about location before booking.
