“Fantastic location, exceptional staff & service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 May 2011

This was our 2nd trip to the Au Coin du Feu - and we were just as impressed, actually more so than last year, for a number of reasons.

The danger with returning to a previously visited chalet/hotel is that sometimes things aren't quite as you remembered; perhaps the accommodation is starting to look a little 'tired', maybe the food isn't quite as good, perhaps the seasonal staff aren't quite as switched on as last year and so on..... I'm pleased to report that none of these were true !!! In fact, the food was just as good if not better, we comfortably fitted 2 adults and a 7 year old child in our room and the service & staff were fantastic (more of which below).

From the skiing perspective, even though the 2010/11 snow conditions weren't the best on record (I had a mate staying over in Courchevel the same week and it was worse over there), you could still ski down the home run to within 100m of the back door, even though it was mid-April !

Unfortunately our holiday took a turn for the worse when my partner was the victim of a bad skiing accident (broken leg) up in Avoriaz mid-way through the week. From that point on, ALL of the staff (as well as the owners Paul & Francesca) went out of their way and above & beyond the call of duty to offer help & assistance, including practical, emotional & logistical support. We were so unbelievably grateful and cannot thank them enough. Their actions prevented an unfortunate accident turning into a complete nightmare.

We will definitely be back !

What more can I say. Francesca, Amie and the team are lovely. Jamie is the friendliest batman in the world and Becky ensured our baby was happy and secure. Snow wasn't great but I think Francesca was trying to sort that out too! She made sure we knew where to go to get the best of what was there.

Complaint: need Francesca to open Chillypowders in the glacier resorts!

We had a lovely week at Chilly Powder with our two young children. The ski school arrangements for the children would be hard to beat with small groups of children of similar ability from the chalet being taught together each morning. We just delivered our eldest all togged up outside the chalet in the morning and the group went off in the cable car while we got ourselves sorted for the day. Both children skiing and non skiing were very happy to go to the nannies in the mornings. They did outings or playing in the garden in the afternoon which was perfect.

The food in the Chalet was delicious and the atmosphere very socialable with the big tables at dinner time. Children generally seemed to be up in their rooms asleep after all the skiing or watching DVDS. There was a listening service and a children's games room downstairs with a wii etc if they wanted to be there. The children's tea always included plain pasta, cucumber, carrots, peppers, ham and cheese as well as a nightly special so we knew ours would eat something. Loads of choice at breakfast and delicious afternoon cakes as well.

The location of the Chalet is great although it is right at the bottom of the skiing so you wouldn't pop home on your way past. 3-5 minutes walk to a cable car or chair lift to start the day and then a pleasant, although challenging in places, blue run into the back garden to get home. Very possible to meet your ski school child at the top of the cable car at 12 to ski together in the afternoons without having to go back to the chalet. There is very little in the way of shops etc in Prodains itself (a few restaurants and hotels) but there is a free 15 minute bus into the centre of Morzine as well as the cable car to Avoriaz both of which a nice places for non skiers. Short transfer time from Geneva too which was brilliant.

The ski area in Avoriaz was great - we enjoyed the snow cross pistes which are unpisted but marked runs. The village height (at the top of the cable car) is 1800m so the snow should be ok most of the time. Some of the blue runs in the middle did get a little crowded at times. The lifts are mainly chairlifts which is good for adults but less good for beginner children - not many fun gondola rides to be had. Fun horse drawn sleigh rides more than made up for that! I felt our family would have been fine with the local lift pass - we ventured over towards Switzerland and Chatel but the snow was probably better in Avoriaz

The hot tub outside the chalet was a really nice touch and good fun after a days ski. There is also sledging and chickens and rabbits there and it is easy to ski up and down the little hill out there with the children too. There is an in house massage service which was lovely and any slight query that we had was delt with extremely efficiently by the hotel manager who always seemed to be there when questions arose. All the staff were friendly and professional and addressed us all by name. On the Monday night there was a game of Killer Pool after dinner - great fun.

In all I think it would be hard to beat Chilly Powder for a family skiing holiday.

A fantastic, wonderful chalet with one of the best atmospheres going; relaxed for single or group travelers looking for fast access to the slopes, or families in need of a roomy base, all fit well into this professional homely house owned by Francesca & Paul.
If you have high social expectations you will enjoy the fabulous food, always with a twist on the norm to keep you contemplating the following evenings possibilities!
A stunning library complements the interior with quite areas if you need to escape. A hot tub outside on the edge of the piste, sauna, massage and a small in-obtrusive bar with character all add to the feeling of a relaxed open house.
Return ? - you bet, as the location, food, facilities and professional staff make this a perfect trip without compare. Look for the Chamois on the slopes above you, tap into the huge knowledge and skills of the Chalet Staff (Amie is world class in getting everything organised) and enjoy a stay beyond expectation.
If M&S did Ski Chalets, this would be it!

We returned to Chilly Powder for the 5th time this month. I've reviewed it before, but it's always worth updating it, as things can change....
In fact, things were pretty much the same - friendly and efficient staff (they had memorised everyone's names within a day or two - pretty impressive as there were well over 40 of us!), fantastic food, great skiing and children's lessons (one of our children had only one other child in his ski group), homely and welcoming atmosphere, etc etc ....
I think the main changes this year were that the food was even better than previously - which was actually quite hard to believe! The breakfast menu has been extended to include crepes daily, as well as the hot option (which varied from bacon, eggs and beans to scrambled egg and smoked salmon, omlettes etc) and an extensive buffet of cereals, pastries, bread, yoghurt, cheese, ham etc. The kids couldn't believe their luck - pancakes for breakfast every day!
Also the afternoon tea has been extended to include a savoury option and bread, butter and jam, as well as a cake. Several families missed lunch altogether and had a late cooked breakfast, then skied all day until 4.30, did the home run (which literally finishes at the hot-tub) and grabbed some afternoon tea which saw them through until the amazing 4 course dinner at 8pm. We were too greedy, however...
So basically - great family chalet/hotel, the food is amazing, the childcare second to none, there's free wi-fi, games consoles, a pool table and sky TV if you want it, and it's ski in, with less than a 2 min walk to the cable car up to Avoriaz - what more could you want?

Our third consecutive visit. Still fantastic. Kids loved it. Children were 3 and 4 on our first visit and now 5 and 6. The chalet location is perfect for skiing in Avoriaz. The creche drop off/pick up service is ideal as all the kids are together having fun and they don't even notice you are not with them. As keen skiers, it means we can ski all day without worrying whether or not the children are happy. The children are grouped with other children in the chalet according to ability and they have private ESF instruction ensuring small groups and good progression over the week. Their skis are left in Avoriaz so they don't even have to carry them!
The chalet itself is warm and welcoming with lovely staff and delicious food. You can choose your room when you book and they have different room combinations to suit different family sizes.
I would highly recommend this company, they are a very honest family owned business who go out of their way to ensure you have a fantastic, hassle free holiday.

Chilly Powder have a small number of chalets in the local area - we stayed in the Au Coin du Feu, which is the largest one - on a snowboarding/skiing trip and would highly recommend it to others.

It's certainly bigger than what you might expect from a traditional 'chalet' hence it's description of Chalet/Hotel - the target audience is most definitely families, although we were there on our own and the large amount of kids around the place was never an issue as the meal-times are kept very separate (which was appreciated !). If you want a kid-free place to stay, then you should probably look elsewhere.....

The location is v.convenient - very close (about 2 mins walk, even in ski boots) to the main cable car that takes you up into the centre of Avoriaz. There's also a red run down from above that means any intermediates could ride all the way virtually to the back door of the chalet, although it can get really mogully. There's not much else going on in the immediate vicinity as the local hamlet is fairly quiet - you'll need to go up to Avoriaz or down to Morzine if you want busy bars.....

The food was exceptionally good - several notches up from ski hotel food and definitely up there with the best I've ever had on a skiing holiday. They have their own bar although it is quite small relative to the number of people that can be accommodated, only a minor criticism though.

Many of the bedrooms are individually themed - on checking in our room had mistakenly been allocated elsewhere, but this was quickly rectified and we were given an alternative room that we were very happy with. Had we arrived later in the day this might have been a bit more tricky to resolve.......The overall condition of the bedrooms was high, although the standard-sized rooms are not the largest to be honest. Our room had a shower only, but this wasn't a problem for us as you could relax your weary ski legs in the outdoor hot-tub.

The staff were excellent - one or both of the owners were present every day, but not in your face, and Amie (Manager) was very helpful and knowledgeable about the local area. They had nice touches like the fact the bar staff will even bring drinks out to the hot-tub for you. Also, the serving staff knew everyone's names by the 2nd day which was an impressive feat of recall ! One suggested area of improvement would be related to providing more info on which restaurants to aim for (or avoid!) on the chalet staff's night off.

In summary, this won't be a cheap skiing holiday (thinking with winter travellers in mind) but it is reasonable value for money, considering all of the above. We've already booked to return in April 2011 with my 7 year old daughter and we can't wait.
