Reviewed 23 March 2009

Avoriaz is a fantastic location for all levels of skiers and for families.

We stayed at the Balcons du Soleil Elinka block which is rated 4* by PV but only 3* by the French tourist board. This should at least be mentioned on their site.

The flats were ok, but too small (flat for 6-8 had only 1 toilet, 2 showers, a tiny room with bunks beds for kids, a double bed, a small room with two single beds). The living area/kitchen were ok.. but still small considering the declared capacity of the flat.
Also the cleaning staff could do a better job, although maybe its just the complex that needs some refurbishing.

Having said all this, Avoriaz itself is a wonderful resort and more than compensates for the disappointing accomodation.

I stayed here as part of a group of 5 people for the first week in February. The first thing to note about the Balcons du Soleil is that the accommodation appears to be split into different buildings but all are within touching distance of each other. Some of the names are Saskia, Douchka and Chapka among others. We were staying in the Chapka. All of the Balcon du Soleil apartments are in the La Falaise area of Avoriaz. This is at the top of the town so closest when you come off the slopes.

We had a 2 bed apartment which is stated as being for 6/7 people. There was one bedroom with a double bed, a smaller bedroom (little tight) with bunk beds and then 2 sofa beds in the sitting room, 1 with an extra pull out bed. The kitchen (part of the sitting room) was very well equipped. There were 2 bathrooms - 1 large one with toilet, bath and shower connection and a smaller bathroom with toilet and shower. There is a ski room in each building on the bottom floor with each apartment having a specific locker. We fit 2 snowboards and 3 sets of skis/boots in the locker easily enough. Only thing I would say is that the room is quite narrow so tough enough to get boots on if more than a couple of people there. Your room key opens the locker.

The accommodation is ski in ski out which was brilliant. There was a lovely bakery on the corner, 30 seconds walk away and a supermarket across the road (1min walk). I hired skis from Ski Land which was directly across the road from the Chapka apartments so perfect location. Alpiski was also there. There is a bar in the Chapka building which is open until 2am most nights which also serves food but I have to say that the noise never disturbed us. This bar shows sports like football matches etc.

To get from La Falaise/Balcon du Soleil to the main ski lifts you have to ski down through the town (although not down the main street). It can be quite busy but its an easy ski which takes about 3mins. Then you have access to a multitude of slopes.

The slopes in the Portes du Soleil area are excellent. Lots of blue, red and black runs. Not a lot of green slopes for beginners.

The town itself has a number of decent restaurants and bars. Its small enough (you can walk from one end to the other in less than 5 mins) so there is not a huge choice on bars etc. The Place, Wild Horse and Shooters bar at the bottom of the town and very lively and good fun.

All in all I loved the resort and the accomodation was perfect for our needs. As I said we had 5 in the apartment with 2 in the living room. Any more would have been very tight on space so I think putting 7 in a 2 bed would be tough going. But the facilities were great. There was constant hot water which was great.

I would definitely return!

We (partner and 2 children aged 8 and 11) spent Feb half term in Les Balcons du Soleil.

I have to say that I was impressed. We booked with Crystal and chose an apt type C1 which had a pull out bed and separate room off the lounge. I was slightly disappointed when I realised the separate room was actually divided by some cumbersome archaic fold back contraption. The lounge area itself was pretty small but nothing that isn't normal for a ski apt. The children had a pull out bed and sofa bed to sleep on in the lounge which for them was more than adequate.

The kitchen was small but functional (maybe not when all 4 of us were in there ravenous! )

I was impressed with the bathroom, again small, but there was a bath which I always find welcoming after a day on the slopes.

The apartments I found to be very clean and the location was perfect. Avoriaz is built down a slope with the apt and ski school being at the top. The children were virtually able to roll out of bed into ski school with it being about a 3 min walk. The apartment also faced a lovely and very popular bakery and also has a small supermarket on the same block.

In addition to convenience, the views of Avoriaz and neighbouring mountains were lovely....

First time skiing with the kids so maybe I'm viewing things through rose tinted specs... but if I had to chose the apartment again, I'd chose ours...

Avoriaz itself we found to be expensive for a family, we ordered 2 large cokes, a pint and a mulled wine from a slope side bar and it came to about £17.... in terms of night life, there wasn't much going on... maybe due to half term... we were pleased not to be tempted though given the prices!

Stayed in a studio apartment for 4, 2 adults and 2 children I would say it is suitable for. Clear apartment with fridge, dishwasher and microwave/grill and a coffee percolator. Small bathroom but has all you need. I took a travel kettle as I knew a kettle wasn't supplied so take one if you like your cups of tea! The building seems to be getting a bit old but the apartments and aeas around seem well cared for. This building is part of about 5 buildings that make up the Les Balcon du Soleil apartments. The closest apartments to the "Plateau" and the coach drop off point, but no problems with noise. Would stay again.
