“Fantastic ski in/ski out location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 October 2010

Visited Avoriaz for skiing weekend with friends and stayed at Balcons. Great location - close to the drop off point for the resort (Avoriaz doesn't allow vehicles), with ski shop in the basement and ski in/ski out access.

Accommodation was basic (four blokes in a studio flat was a bit claustrophobic after four nights) but comfortable, clean and perfectly adequate for the weekend. Easy access both to skiing and restaurants, bars, etc.

Would be quite happy to go again, although would probably get a slightly larger apartment.

In search of a ski-in ski-out resort, we stumbled upon these apartments in Avoriaz. We were very pleased with our find. The rooms were simple and clean with easy access to the slopes.

As other reviewers have mentioned it was a little hard to find exactly which block the buildings are at because our bookings on alpharooms had different names to what was used locally and signed on the buildings. Once that was worked out, reception was straightforward, albeit a little surly, but that did not impact on our stay. Our building was Douchska which was nice and quiet.

Room was self catering with a kitchenette. This was a great feature as eating out was so pricey at the resort restaurants (mains around 20 euros). The grocery station was next door and we picked up all the food that we needed. The kitchen was adequately stocked with plenty of pots, pans, crockery and utensils. A good microwave was provided with an electric hob top. There was also a dishwasher.

We made full use of the self catering option by having our meals in the room. Even lunch was possible as it was so easy to ski back to the hotel.

Room was a good size. There were two bunk beds in a separated section with a door. And two more beds can be made by converting the lounge seaters.

Ours was not a serviced apartment. They only clean it after you leave. Although dishwashing liquid was provided, you will need to get your own toilet paper and shampoo and soaps. You will also make your own beds from the doona and sheets provided.

The one thing that I was disappointed about was the left luggage facility. Our departure was not until night time so as to get an extra day of skiing in. There was nowhere secure to leave our things. They have a very large luggage room, but no one looks after it. We found people stashing their gear in various hiding spots. When we went to the tourist office to ask if there were any lockers, they said they had none which meant that we had no alternative. I thought this was strange as other ski resorts have secure lockers for hire.

Overall, very happy with the apartments. Good location, clean self catering rooms, and very good value for money.

I stayed another time with my family in Avoriaz, this time in the Pierre & Vacances « Balcons de Soleil ». In the past we’ve been staying in Club Med.

Our experience was excellent. The Resort Avoriaz is simply great, from my point of wiew for families as well as for friends or couples.
Tons of high level Ski, Restaurants and Nightlive in a stunning and unique surrounding.

We opted for Les Balcons de Soleil as we considered that there’s so much going on in Avoriaz that we wouldn’t need the “all in” animated package of the Club;

It was the right choice. Accommodations were very well and really spacious. The residence provided us with everything we needed in a very comfortable look & feel. The situation is high end, as you’re on foot step from the main center, but still avoiding the hassle of the bars when going for a deserved rest.

I had a look at other residences as well, there are quite some good ones, but this was definitely the best standing in Avoriaz.

We’ll come back next year

Les Balcons in several buildings at top of village, we stayed in room 103 Elinka building supposed to be apartment for 8, there were only 4 of us and l baby The 2. bedrooms just okay in size. 2bunks in cabin room by front door, we used this area for storage, pillows awful. Bathoom had bath with shower attachment, basin and WC, small shower room with basin. NOTE there is only one WC in all the apartments for 8 inspite of what PV site states. In some of the 7 persons apartments in Chapka building there are 2 WCs but rooms very small. Kitchen area very small NO oven. Living area no bigger than rooms for 4 people, we only had 1 settee!!! but because we had spare mattresses were able to make a settee using the pull out bed, the mattresses and our very helpful rep. found us some large cusions to borrow. All furniture very tired and tatty, light hanging off wall, not that clean. Safety box 20 euros. internet 15 euros. WC in reception not always open. Crystal brochure describes at high quality 4 star but France rate them 3 star and they are not high quality.

Many thanks for posting your review. It does seem there is an error on our website detailing the amount of WC's in our apartments. We apologise for the convenience here and we can assure you this is going to be rectified as soon as possible. Our website and brochure do clearly state that kitchenettes have hob and hot plate and also specify the furnishings in each room including sofas and sofa beds. Additional costs for safety boxes and the internet are also listed. We apologise if the furnishings in your particular room were not up to scratch and we have logged this comment and will pass this onto head office for further investigation. We will also be in touch with Crystal to ensure we are listed correctly.

The apartments are situated just a five minute walk from the main town of Avoriaz, but directly behind the ski school meeting point and the lifts to The Stash, and just "up slope" from the main lift area.

The apartments are extremely well equipped, and well cleaned. There is plenty of room in the one bedroom for a family of four

We had a studio in the Sepia building for 4 people which was fine for a family with small children but would have been inadequate for 4 adults. There was a double sofa-bed in the main living area and a bunk-bed in the entrance area which could be closed off to make a seperate bedroom at night.

The appartment is not huge, but again for a family with 2 small kids it was fine.

The big positive was the view from the balcony looking over the cliff edge out to Morzine in the valley below and the mountains beyond.

The only real negative was the noise in the evenings. There were a lot of student groups staying at the same time as us who liked to party in their appartments making a lot of noise until about midnight, when I presume they went out. Luckily it did not go on too late, so it's only really a problem if you've got young kids who go to sleep earlier.

Overall, quite satisfied with these appartments but would probably rent a private appartment in Avoriaz next year.

Avoriaz is a fantastic location for all levels of skiers and for families.

We stayed at the Balcons du Soleil Elinka block which is rated 4* by PV but only 3* by the French tourist board. This should at least be mentioned on their site.

The flats were ok, but too small (flat for 6-8 had only 1 toilet, 2 showers, a tiny room with bunks beds for kids, a double bed, a small room with two single beds). The living area/kitchen were ok.. but still small considering the declared capacity of the flat.
Also the cleaning staff could do a better job, although maybe its just the complex that needs some refurbishing.

Having said all this, Avoriaz itself is a wonderful resort and more than compensates for the disappointing accomodation.
