“Absolute Gem.Great Value For Money”
Reviewed 18 February 2009

We have just come back from a 4 night stay at this hotel (the only hotel that would accommodate us in the whole of Morzine for less than a week over half term). What a find it is. The staff were helpful and friendly. We were about 150m to the Avoriaz lift and a very short walk to the town centre and Le Pleney lifts. The room (although not luxurious) was very clean and warm. We had dinner one evening (we should have eaten here every night)! the food was very good and exceptional value compared to the restauarants in town. Breakfast was adequate - boiled eggs. cereal, fruit, meat ,bread croissants and pastries. OK we had to ring a bell to get service at the bar, but what friendly service it was! Value for money this hotel is absolutely superb.

A large group of us, comprising eight adults and 10 children stayed for a week between Dec 26-Jan 2 and we really enjoyed ourselves.

The location is perfect, in that you can walk a short distance to the ski lifts and town centre.

The hotel is run by a family who are very caring and friendly. The 'mum' of the family cannot speak English but her daughter Marie-Sophie can and they are all so friendly and charming.

If you try to speak to the 'mum' in a Basil Fawlty-style, as one English guest did when we were there, then they will look at you blankly, but if you understand and appreciate her lack of English, you will soon realise she has a good sense of humour.

The food was excellent - we had breakfast and evening meal - and the rooms were fine.

Admittedly, one or two of the rooms had problems with radiators or occasional lack of hot water during our stay, but this was soon rectified.

The bar is always open but you have to ask for a drink - there is no permanent barman - but they have a very laid-back atmosphere which we liked.

There is no reception as such and no safety deposit boxes, but we liked that about this hotel - it made it feel more homely.

You can lock your room and hide your room key, as long as you leave it for cleaners before going out, and they close the main door with a security coded lock at midnight.

This means if you come back from town after midnight you have to remember the code to let yourself in - which we found fine.

The family appeared to enjoy having children around and made sure we were happy.

It was not too pricey but you have to appreciate that as a two-star hotel you won't get The Ritz.

But you will get a well-run, small and friendly hotel in a perfect spot.

I was really disappointed with this hotel. I know this is a 2*, so I'm not judging it by the accomodation standard. This review is purely representing our experience staying there and interactions with the owners.

First, the double room was two single beds pushed together, unless you ask for one double-bed specifically. We did, but on arrival was told, 'Non' (even though the hotel was half full).

We booked asking for a room with a shower. Our room had a bath only and after our first night, we asked to be moved and was told, 'We don't have any shower only rooms'. Three other couples with us had rooms with showers only.

The radiators in the rooms did not work and we were all constantly cold. We asked about this and the owners said the underfloor heating was sufficient. Coming back from a wet and cold day snowboarding, we had no place to dry our wet gloves or ski pants and they did not offer a drying room.

Security... you have to leave your key hanging by the reception and use a doorcode pin to enter the hotel. Great...but one night we came back with our key missing and no one at reception (which was normal after 22:00). With no alternative or no one to call, we started hunting around and looked behind the reception desk where we found our key in a plastic bucket.

The atmosphere of the hotel was more like an empty hostel. They have a really nice bar area and pool table, but they never opened the bar or lit their beautiful fireplace in 4 days. The pictures on their website are really deceiving.

The positives.... It was clean, the breakfast was sufficient, and the location was the best thing. It is about a 5 min walk to the lift.

Overall this hotel was a 2*, but the owner was so unwelcoming, unaccomodating, and 'angry with a smile.' If you are looking for a cheap place to stay at the last minute, then yes stay here for the basics. But, if you plan to stay more than a couple of days then look elsewhere.
