Chalet Hotel La Chaumiere
Ranked #7 of 50 Hotels in Morzine
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 8 January 2011

The best part of this hotel are the owners - very happy to help. However we had quite a few issues:
1 - not enough hot water for all guests to have a shower which is not acceptable after a day skiing
2 - central heating not great, heating doesn't come on till about 5pm and then its not very warm
3 - walls are paper thin so you can hear everything going on in the hotel
4 - rooms are TINY! Our shower room had an area less then 1 foot square to stand in to dry yourself! Not good if you are sharing and want to separate the beds as there is no room to move them apart.
5 - cleaners don't do much cleaning - they make the beds and theats about it. Don't take out the glasses or cups etc.
6 - the food was quite "posh", ie small portions and not necessarily what you want after a hard day skiing. When they offer you coffee after the meal be warned - they add this to your bar bill and don't mention that is not included! 3 euros for a mouthful of expresso is a bit steap!
7 - They must have the only bar in the world that refuses to stock Diet Coke as the sell by date is too short!!
8 - its a bit of a trek out of town up a hill - this is a fine walk as long as you aren't in ski boots!

In general its a cheap hotel but is in deperate need of a refurb, especially the bathrooms. Our mirror was all black round the edges just due to age, half the lights didnt work, in general is just tired.

SimplyMorzine, Owner at Chalet Hotel La Chaumiere, responded to this reviewResponded 19 January 2011

We are sorry that our hotel did not meet this party’s expectations. The group made their disappointment loud and clear over the course of their holiday. Despite our efforts to make their stay comfortable, we felt some of the criticisms to be unfair and unrealistic. To respond to the issues which have been raised:

1 – We apologised for the lack of hot water on some occasions. This can sometimes occur on peak weeks, such as this New Year period, if all guests return from the slopes at the same time. We suggested returning before 17:30/18:00, or waiting in the bar with an après ski drink. As members of the Morzine hoteliers association we know this can be a problem for many hotels in the resort.

2 – The central heating system is set to heat in the morning between around 06:00-10:00 and in the late afternoon/evening between around 16:00-22:00. The heating is set on an ambient temperature at night when guests are sleeping, and likewise in the daytime when guests are out skiing. We checked the guests’ rooms and found the radiator to be working properly and the room to be a pleasant temperature in our opinion. We asked some other guests about the heating; they said the temperature was warm, or if anything, too warm. In our letter to the party leader responding to their post holiday complaints, we apologised if anyone found their room to be an insufficient temperature.

3 – We are sorry if the guests were disturbed in their room by other residents. Like most alpine hotels and chalets, la Chaumière is not fully sound proof, yet neither are the walls ‘paper thin’.

4 – One of the idiosyncrasies (& charms?) of a traditional alpine property is that bedrooms can vary in terms of size, design and personality. What the reviewer has not mentioned is that following their complaint & when another room become available after their 2nd night, we moved them from the twin room they had reserved to a family room. We hope they found this bedroom more spacious.

5 – We aim to ensure that all bedrooms are cleaned to a high standard. We apologise if the reviewer felt the level of daily housekeeping was insufficient. The maids have a daily checklist and rooms are periodically inspected. Can we reassure guests that our chambermaids clean rooms daily and do not just make beds.

6 – We pride ourselves in the quality and quantity of our cuisine. Every evening meal is 4-courses (including cheeseboard), with a choice of 2 dishes for the main course. We are not mind-readers so if guests are still hungry after their main course all they have to do is ask - seconds are often available!
– Afternoon cakes, wine and tea/coffee are not included in the holiday price. This is clearly explained on the Prices page of the website and in email correspondence at time of booking. Another member of the party made the holiday booking on behalf of the group so we assume the reviewer was not informed of this. Also a welcome letter given to all guests with their room keys on arrival reminds that drinks are not included. It is normal polite service for the waiter to ask whether guests would like a hot drink after their meal.

7 – This accolade was announced to us on the guest’s penultimate day. Had we known the importance of stocking diet Coke/Pepsi earlier in their stay, we would have arranged for a delivery for the following day. We now stock diet Coke/Pepsi so thank the reviewer for alerting us to the oversight.

8 – For guests who can’t or don’t want to ski from/to the hotel, we offer popular minibus shuttles following breakfast, then again from a meeting point after skiing within a designated time frame. There is rarely the need to walk back to the hotel in ski boots at the end of the day. With outdoor footwear stored at our local shop (Felix Ski), should guests finish skiing before the afternoon shuttles they can leave all ski equipment there and walk back to the hotel (little over 5 minutes) without wearing boots.

9 – Usually if guests have any light bulbs needing to be replaced they just ask and we change immediately.

Once again we regret these guests found our hotel to be substandard. We hope they find more suitable accommodation on future visits to Morzine.

Hotel in good location - proprietors Frank and Michelle give you a superb friendly welcome and cannot do enough to make your stay enjoyable - at the drop of a hat they will take you or pick you up in in their minibus - they even took some our family home at gone midnight who were staying elsewhere - we thoroughly enjoyed the food and the good selection if wines! - the hotel has a very good arrangement with a ski and boot shop near the pistes which makes ski-ing as convenient as possible

We've just got back from a week at Hotel la Chaumiere and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It is a family run hotel, full of rustic charm with a smart bar/restaurant and lovely food for breakfast and dinner. The owners, Michele and Franck, really make a difference as they were very welcoming, friendly and made an effort to engage with their guests. Franck was so helpful driving us to the pistes in the morning. The other members of their family who were there and also their staff were all very helpful and did their best.
We heard other guests complaining about the lack of hot water and although it could be better, imagine 50 or so guests all showering at once after a day on the pistes! Not surprising, and as long as you shower as soon as you get back, it isn't a huge problem. It's a very good 2 star hotel, I'm surprised it's not at least a 3 star.

Our family stayed here and had a very mixed time. The hosts were wonderful, warm and did their utmost to help. The food was absolutely first rate with good plentiful fresh food served by friendly local girls. However, this is exactly how it is described here, an old farm house, well converted but with small bedrooms rooms and basic amientities.

However, this offers true to ski to the Hotel door after a great day skiing, frienfly helpful shuttles to ski lift and into town. SOme nights the bar can be nosy/rowdy depending on the guests, the first few days it was quiet and family orientated, the last weekend a very rowdy group kep tthe bar busy into the wee hours.

My kids do not wan tot go back as no reliable internet or cable TV but for us foodies it was very good slightly tarmished by the small rooms.

We booked and stayed here independently for a long weekend skiing in March. There were 2 couples in our group and we all said that we would return. Michele, Franck and their family are fantastic hosts and could not do enough to help. Franck ran us to the lifts every morning and you can ski back at the end of the day, if you dont ski back it is only 10 mins walk from the Pleney and the centre of town. We were staying B&B and the breakfast was lovely, the bar is well stocked and serves a great coffee with fab meringues. Please dont let any of the negative reviews put you off staying at this friendly, well located hotel.

Booked through Simply Morzine and could not have been more pleasantly surprised. A lovely family run hotel with good service, lovely food, friendly atmosphere and good value for money. Although not ski in/ski out in March the mountains were easily accessible using the Simply Morzine bus service to the Pleney and Super Morzine lifts morning and evening.

Using the Simpy Morzine guys to organise lift passes and take us to the Felix ski shop made it easy to be on the slopes nice and early.

The hotel is located only a short walk from the town for evening entertainment although once you've eaten such a lovely meal and drunk the fine wines on offer your more likely to want to stay in the hotel bar and relax as we did!

As a veteran-ish 40 something year old skier, with a young family,my time on the slopes are now precious. My pass out this year was for three days with one like minded brother and three friends.
Firstly, the transfer from Geneva was,on time, fast and fuss free.Straight to Felix ski hire.Ski's etc sorted in 10 minutes.Back in the mini bus,to the hotel.Chris then waited while we changed, advised us where to ski, handed us our pre ordered lift passes, and took us directly to the Pleney lift.
The rest of the break followed in this professional and faultless manner.
The Hotel was exactly as I expected.Clean and tidy rooms, great shower,(a bug bear in some very much more expensive hotels I have frequented),perfectly suitable in my opinion. The staff were all very friendly, food excellent, and they even laid on for us a hot meal before our 6pm departure on our last day.
The Simply staff were never far away making sure everything was o.k.
All in all 10 out of 10 for Simply Morzine and everyone at the Hotel.
We hope to be back next year, either with our families in a chalet or the Dads in the Hotel again.
This is my third year doing short breaks for my friends and I,and is easily my best experience so far!!
