I recently spent a night at the ibis styles Villerbanne, formerly known as the Alliance Hotel, formerly known as the Holiday Inn. As I said in my review of this house when it was still referred to as the Alliance, the principal reason for most of the guests to choose this house is the close proximity to the INSA Lyon University Campus. Whenever I spend more than one day at INSA, I stay at this hotel, and have done so for many years.
The hotel became an Alliance hotel when the state it was in would no longer be upmarket enough to deserve the Holiday Inn Label. From what I was able to observe, Alliance only made the absolutely necessary repairs and never undertook a real renovation. On my last stay there 6 months ago, the hotel was evidently run down.
Enter ibis styles. This new category of hotels of the Accor group takes a deliberately aggressive attempt to design using pop colours (frog green is their hallmark colour) and associated furniture, to obtain a maximum effect with minimal financial effort. I was skeptical about the result when I saw the pictures on their web site, and found my fears confirmed during the first 3 minutes after entering the hotel lobby. However, after one night, I honestly believe the hotel changed for the better. My good rating is evidently biased by the fact that the renovation and redesign took place only recently, and everything worked perfectly. It will be interesting to see if they maintain the status quo, a thing the Alliance owner never manged (and probably did not care for).
I do believe the hotel rate went up slightly, but breakfast is now included, and the breakfast room benefits from the redesign. However, the same room is used for the restaurant at dinnertime, which I found less appropriate for that purpose, with its plastic chairs and cantine tables. I might give it a try on a later visit ; for this first night at the ibis styles, I lacked the courage and decided to eat in Vieux Lyon next to the cathedral.
Gone are the inroom coffee makers, but they have (better) coffee available in the lobby now, where they also offer computers with internet access. The wireless internet was fast and reliable, and the personnel courteous and friendly. I am sure they will correct the worst design errors over time, like the extremely bright neon light placed vertically on the room's wall or the way too loud music in the elevator.
Now I only need to get used to frog green funny shaped furniture, and I have my new address in Lyon-Villeurbanne.
