“Amazing. Perfect”

Second stay this year. Cant fault the location, facilities or the owner. 15 minutes from what seems like pretty much everything to do in the forest of dean! Get biscuits, apple juice and milk on arrival too!

“Perfect retreat for the solo holidaymaker”
Reviewed 17 May 2016 for a stay in May 2016

Dean Cottages, just 3 miles from Mitcheldean, is located on the edge of the Forest of Dean, south of Ross on Wye. A trio of small, but perfectly formed, cleverly designed, extremely well equipped holiday rentals on a common, any one of which provides a perfect holiday destination. 2 of the rentals are pet friendly. Travelling without a human companion, but accompanied by 2 elderly, rescued guinea pigs in an indoor plastic cage with folding travel pen for outdoor use, I chose the smallest guest accommodation: Little Owl - a cosy, light, attractively furnished studio flat with direct access from the glass door onto a lawn, adjacent to and facing an equine farm. The little flat was spotlessly clean and fresh. It is ideal for one, or a couple happy in each other's company. A welcome tray of goodies was on the kitchen counter when I arrived - a nice touch, much appreciated. The information folder was comprehensive and very helpful.

Down the hillside path past the other 2 little self catering cottages (Wren and Robin), was the enclosed wildlife garden. This was a real bonus for anyone staying at Dean Cottages with a dog, or like me am a keen wildlife enthusiast. I spent several happy hours feedign and watching birds from the hide or picnic benches, or kneeling by the pond observing the newts and tadpoles. I made a new pal too - Nemo, a very friendly local black and white cat, who sat on the bench beside me, or followed me around on each trip down the path. The views from this garden were splendid. It was relaxing and peaceful there.

Dean Cottages are an ideally positioned base to explore the area with its huge number and wide range of attractions to suit all tastes: pretty towns such as Ross and Newent for example, with Gloucester, Chester and Chepstow not too far either, and plenty of attractions such as a local craft centre, arboretum and Birds of Prey Centre. Wonderful selection of footpaths, bridleways and cycle routes to explore, either immediately from the doorstep, or within a few miles by car, if you don't mind carefully navigating the track after leaving the tarmac lane, making sure you consider horse-riders and dog walkers likely to be encountered en-route(honestly the potholes are not bad - certainly navigable sensibly by 99% of cars!).

I was so delighted with my short break I am in the process of booking a week's stay, once again choosing Little Owl - the short break was TOO short!

“Such a lovely stay in Little Owl”
Reviewed 28 March 2016 for a stay in March 2016

We really enjoyed our stay here. Little Owl has everything we could have needed and more! It is extremely cosy and very well kept. The owners are very thoughtful and considerate and we definitely recommend staying here. There is plenty of information available inside regarding local walks and places of interest which we found very useful. The kitchen is fully equipped and the TV and Wifi are brilliant too. It is in a good location to explore the nearby towns and not far from the centre of the Forest.

The Forest of Dean is absolutely beautiful and we made the most of the walking trails on the days with better weather. We also did some of the more local walks listed in the folder around Mitcheldean and Littledean, which were lovely.

We want to return at some point in the future and won't be looking for anywhere else to stay as we really didn't want to leave - Little Owl see you again soon.

It's great that you had such a good time at Little Owl and thank you for your kind comments about the studio. We were envious when we read in our visitors' book that you had seen the red moon! It is great for looking at the stars and planets as is is properly dark here at nightime. We're glad you want to return another time, and we look forward to welcoming you back.

“Lovely little studio lodge in the heart of the forest”
Reviewed 12 September 2015 for a stay in September 2015

Had a fantastic weeks holiday here, very welcoming with loads of information available about where to go, eat etc. Our two dogs also had a great time in the forest, Quite convenient to attractions, walks for dogs literally minutes away and accessible on foot. Will definitely be back again. Very clean and well equipped for both us and the dogs. Were lucky enough to spot deer, wild boar and a slow-worm in the forests!

“Lovely little retreat”
Reviewed 5 August 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We stayed here for a weekend break a year earlier, and it just wasn't long enough. This time we stayed a full week. The studio is perfectly adequate for a couple, it was clean, tidy and well equipped. It is quite easy to find, if you follow the owners directions. It is quite a long way from (or at least it seems so) public roads which means you are in quite a quiet location. On the down side this access road is the only vehicular way in and out. That said it isnt far from the forest of dean at all and we find it a very convenient base for the area, not far from Gloucester in one direction and the forest in the other.
The owners a very friendly and left a very welcome "welcome" pack.
Highly recommend this if you are looking for a quiet relaxing location to chill out.
