“Peaceful weekend away”
Reviewed 27 February 2018 for a stay in February 2018

Just back from a peaceful girlie weekend away at Little Owl.

We travelled down Saturday, via Ledbury and Ross-on-Wye. Ledbury was a lovely market town with lots of little shops and cafes, we managed to spend around 2 hours here. Rose-on-Wye was visited purely because that was the nearest place to Mitcheldean with a supermarket that we could find.

Karen's instructions were very useful for how to get to the property, just need to insert a "you will think you're lost, but carry on going". We were very confused, but it all came together. I'm just very glad I printed out all the instructions! The property is at the end of a very long, single track lane. It has a fair amount of pot holes and is rougher than I was expecting. My Hyundai i20 managed it, but anyone with a lowered car has no chance.

Once we arrived, it was very easy to figure out parking and where to access your key. We were initally a little disappointed that we did not have a view from the property itself (other than a rusty garage). However, we enjoyed the view from the garden/fenced area.

The accommodation was clean and the welcome tray was lovely with local apple juice, biscuits, milk and a few tea bags/coffee sachets - remember to take your own if you will need more.

Saturday night, we were aiming to go out for dinner, but discovered that no pubs in Mitcheldean served food - none that we could figure out anyway. After travelling all day, we didn't want to travel again so got Chinese takeaway, which was delicious. Definitely recommend. We cosied down for a night of watching DVD's, there were a few you can borrow, but we had taken our own.

Sunday, we went for a walk in Symond's Yat which was chilly but beautiful. We cooked our own dinner Sunday night, the kitchen had everything we needed, but I'd recommend taking your own foil/greaseproof paper if you require it.

I'd also recommend taking your own toilet roll if you're staying for more than a night, as we ran out before we left. - We mentioned this in our feedback and Karen emailed to let me know that this is in the FAQs, we unfortunately hadn't seen this.

Overall, it was a nice and peaceful weekend away.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review of your weekend at Little Owl. I am am glad that you both had a relaxing time . Yes we are off the beaten track and well done for keeping going. It is good advice to bring the directions with you and not just rely on SAT NAV. As it says on Trip Adviser and on our website the road is leading to the cottage is rough and not tarmacked, and its condition does vary with the seasons. It is worse in winter, but our Skoda Fabia manages it on a daily basis. It's best to take it slow and drive near to the fence to keep out of the holes. I am sorry that you were disappointed with the lack of views from the studio. We do not claim to have views from the studio itself, but it is set in a most stunning location as you say, and the wildlife garden has the most amazing views (it's a great place for a picnic in summer!). The garage you refer to is actually an old stone farm building with a sheet of metal on the side. However, for those reading this, from the table and chairs outside Little Owl, there are good views across the Common and you can see the Forest.. We are far from the road and the seating area is on the edge of the Common, so lovely for sitting out with a morning coffee or a glass of wine in the evening. You may have found the reviews of some of our guests misleading as I have just read one which mentions the views as if they are from inside the studio. I 'm glad you like our welcome tray. There is a list of local pubs serving food in Little Owl, a couple are a 10-15 min drive and one The Farmer's Boy Inn will collect you and return you for a small fee. There are a couple of pubs in Mitcheldean, but we don't rate them. Regarding what is provided, we aim to provide a starter pack if you like - a few tea bags and coffee sachets, a fresh pint of milk, sugars, biscuits for your arrival and some local apple juice. This is a self catering unit. Our arrival FAQS are sent upon receipt of your balance outlining what is provided so that you can pack accordingly. There should have been some foil in little Owl, and so I apologise if this was not the case. I will check and replace it ready for the next guests, so thank you for letting me know. We would be very happy to welcome you back one day. You could try Robin Cottage for a touch of luxury and the fantastic views. If ever you or anyone else has any problem whatsoever during their stay they can always call in at our house or give us a call and we will sort it out as best we can (even providing an additional toilet roll if someone has forgotten to bring extras). Thank you again for your review, I am sure that it will clarify a few things and be very helpful for anyone considering a stay at Little Owl.

“Excellent”
Reviewed 22 August 2017 for a stay in August 2017

I stayed here in August for 3 days. I wish it had been more and fully intend to return.
The accommodation is 5 star. Everything you require is in the cottage along with a welcome pack of Apple juice, milk, tea, coffee and some delicious locally made biscuits. A very welcome pack thankyou.
The area is outstanding with walks directly from the cottage door. My 2 dogs loved their walks in the forest as did I.

Thanks again Karen

Thank you so much for this great review Morag! We're so pleased that you and/or little dogs had a great time and enjoyed the walks from the cottage. We love the biscuits too and have to keep them locked away so we don't get tempted! Looking forwards to welcoming you back soon, Karen

“Idyllic Hideaway”
Reviewed 3 May 2017 for a stay in April 2017

Superb accommodation located on the edge of Forest of Dean. Easy access to many attractions within the area including Symonds Yat (spectacular), Clearwell Caves, Mallards Pike Ponds, Ross on Wye. The standard of the studio was second to none, well-appointed, quality furnishings, tasteful décor, spotlessly clean and well equipped. Friendly, helpful owners. Many birds to observe, not to mention Barney the donkey and rare breed sheep and pigs. Vehicular access to the property was not at all daunting. Very generous and varied welcome tray much appreciated. Shops and eating places within easy access.
