Owner description: A unique spot in the heart of the Pennine countryside, Standedge Tunnel is the longest canal tunnel in Britain and makes a perfect family day out. As one of the Seven Wonders of the Waterways visitors can explore deep into the tunnel on one of the family friendly guided boat trips, stop for a bite to eat in the cafe and let the kids jump, climb and explore around our playground and wildlife garden.

Easy free parking in the car park next to the railway station. Very pleasant flat walk along the canal to the centre. 4.50 boat trip with very informative guide. Wait until the lights get turned off.

Beginning with the 15 minute walk along the canal from the car park beyond Marsden Station, we all enjoyed our visit (with our grandchildren - 3 and 1 year old) so much and are planning to visit again very soon. Something for us all in beautifully restored and very clean surroundings, we spent over 3 hours here (could have stayed longer). The barge trip was very informative and interesting and well worth the £4.50 / adult. Well done to all involved.

Today we did the two hour full length canal trip. Absolutly superb, guide very knowledgeable and interesting, entire crew professional and very accomodating supplied us with hard hats and allowed us to walk freely and helped us get some good photos. How they managed to dig this tunnel out with such basic tools, in the dark and only legs to propel is mind boggling.
A fabulous day out for our walking group followed by a 5 mile walk back to Marsden. The cafe is also very nice and the visitors centre very interesting and well presented.
Thank you

A great experience day. visitor centre was not fantastic but there were a series of informative videos to tell you the history but otherwise it seemed to be mostly for children as a play area.
Boat trip into the tunnel was excellent and certain the main experience. Good guide and talk given by very friendly member of staff. trip was only 30mins but gave real feeling for the whole tunnel and its history. went every hour. if you want a longer trip along entire tunnel check for dates/times before going as usually only 30min trips in and back out. Good even on a wet day as made no difference in the tunnel !

This was our second visit with different grand children.
The tour guide was very helpful and made the canal trip a worthwhile experience for the children.
Likewise the friendly coffee shop staff.
An excellent place to spend a half day.
