“5 star Guest House”
Reviewed 1 April 2013

We have just spent the Easter weekend at Poppy Cottage. From the moment we arrived to a welcome cup of tea and biscuits and a log fire in the lounge to the time we left, we were treated like old friends! Our room was warm and beds comfortable. The dressing gowns were very welcome on such a cold weekend and with a kettle in our room and tea and coffee whenever we wanted in the guest dining room, we were very much "at home".
Breakfast was fantastic and available at our convenience, we just had to let them know the night before of the time we would like to eat. The Kellogg's Breakfast Award is well-deserved, the porridge the best I have had anywhere and the cooked breakfast and our son's breakfast pancake were the highlight of our day!
The Swan pub just 5 mins walk away served excellent food with huge portions and was just what we needed after a day of walking/sightseeing or whatever.
We had the Poppy Room which is the largest room and had ample space for the 3 of us, with a large sofa bed and king-size bed. The shower was good and powerful and the bathroom in common with the rest of the house, spotlessly clean.
As you can tell from this review, I would thoroughly recommend Poppy Cottage and thank Sally and Steve for their hospitality.

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights . Steve and Sally were perfect hosts, so friendly and so welcoming and their home is beautiful. The cosy guests lounge has a good information book that contains details of local walks and excursions. They have even printed extra copies of walks for guests to take with them. The dining room contains additional guest tea and coffee making facilities, available all day, and I really appreciated fresh milk being available in the dining room fridge. The breakfast was fantastic and I'm looking forward to eating the eggs from the free range hens, that I came away with.
Our bedroom was lovely, Sally and Steve have such good taste and have retained the original fireplaces etc. The room was spotless and we had a lovely thick duvet to keep us warm. It was also a nice touch to provide bathrobes in the shower room, as well as the usual toiletries.
We were so impressed, we've paid for a 2 night stay for my sister in law and her husband to enjoy.
We also ate some fantastic food (real pub food-not processed ) in the village pub, The Swan. Highly recommended too.

Room Tip: Shower in the Sunflower room, if you don't like a bath.

There is nothing that we can say that hasn't already been said. Sally and Steve run a fantastic guest house. They were so welcoming and couldn't do enough for us. The house is gorgeous; stone flags and log fires - just what you need on a cold and very snowy March weekend. We will definitely return and hopefully this year. Thanks Catherine and Roger

Room Tip: We stayed in the Sunflower Room and it was fantastic - a very dreamy room and perfect for a kids fre...

Myself and my wife stayed for 2 nights at Poppy Cottage. Everything about our stay was 1st class. A warm welcome awaits you and the hosts soon make you feel at home. We had our evening meal here on the 1st night and it was as good as you would get in any restaurant with a wide selection of meals. The breakfast ticked all the boxes with all local food cooked to a high standard. Steve and Sally go out of thier way to make you at ease and nothing is too much trouble for them. We will return to one of the best kept secrets in North Yorkshire that is known as Poppy Cottage.

We stayed here with friends who have stayed several times before. We were welcomed with tea and biscuits in the cosy lounge , log burner glowing. Sally and steve could not have been more helpful. Attention to detail in all the rooms was outstanding. Breakfast very good, eggs very tasty - thanks to the "girls". Would recommend to anyone wanting a 5star bed and breakfast in a great location. Thank you, sally and wayne.
