“A wonderful experience”
Reviewed 30 June 2012

We had a wonderful time in Casa la Pace. It is a beautifullly restored house just outside the village of Ghivizzano. Our hosts Rusty and Pepper could not have been kinder. Rusty met us in person at the local train station and drove us up to the house. Pepper gave us a tour of the old village. It is a beautiful old village which is just as it was hundreds of years ago. It truly is the authentic Italian experience.

Life in the vilage is at a different pace. Everybody has time to stop and talk. The pace of life in Ghivizzano really slows you down. The local bar/cafe in the villlage square serves wonderful home made ice-cream. There are several restuarants within walking distance which are absolutely wonderful and great value.

Breakfast at Casa la Pace is a delight with fresh breads from the village, and wonderful coffee. Rusty and Pepper take care of every detail.

Ghivizzano is on the railway line norht of Lucca and convenient for a numver of wonderful villages nearby. We will be back again!!!!

Dear Catalore,

Casa La Pace Bed and Breakfast would like to thank you for your wonderful review. We do our best to make you feel welcome here. We want to share Ghivizzano and the Serchio Valley with our guests. Here you can experience the 'authentic' Italy that is not to be found in the big tourist cities. As you've described in your kind review, village life has a different rhythm; Ghivizzano is a big part of why our guests so enjoy their time at Casa La Pace.

Thank you for mentioning our breakfast. We are proud to follow the 'slow food' philosophy: Cheese and meats are from local producers and fruit from nearby and in season. Tuscany is known for its food and we are fortunate that the Garfagnana and the Serchio Valley offer so many delicious options.

We enjoyed welcoming you into our home and village. We know that we've made two new friends; we look forward to your next visit.

With appreciation, your hosts – Rusty and Pepper

Words cannot describe how much my family enjoyed our stay at Casa La Pace. After a rigorous touring schedule that included Paris, Salzburg, and Venice, our time at Casa La Pace was like a breath of fresh air. It provided us with the slow-paced, authentic Italian experience we were hoping for.

We arrived in Ghivizzano by car, and after getting a little lost, we called Casa La Pace and Pepper graciously walked into town and personally guided us to their beautiful inn. He and Rusty gave us a full tour of their home, which has been beautifully and authentically restored. Our room was perfect! We had a room overlooking the castle, and there were thoughtful amenities throughout. There was a library, well stocked with both travel guides and books for leisure, and a computer station available for guest use. Wifi was available throughout the inn.

Each morning, a wonderful breakfast was provided, and as we dined, Rusty and Pepper helped us to plan our day. My husband enjoys photography, my daughter loves art, and I am a musician. Rusty and Pepper went to great lengths to plan tours and activities personalized with our interests in mind. One day, Pepper accompanied us to Barga, and gave us a wonderful tour of the medieval city. He provided us with historical information about all of the sights he showed us, and that made the entire experience more meaningful. They also helped us plan a day trip to Florence, highlighting a suggested walking route on a map and making restaurant suggestions that turned out to be fabulous! We were fortunate that they accompanied us to dinner several times and they patiently translated the entire menu for us. Those dinners were some of my best memories of our entire vacation!

I have been home only two days, and I have already researched airfare in hopes of a much longer return trip. After just a short visit, I felt like I made lifelong friends. I highly recommend visiting Casa La Pace!

Dear amylyles,

Casa La Pace Bed and Breakfast would like to thank you for your expansive review. Your family stayed in various hotels and inns during your travels across Europe. We are proud that you had a 'fabulous' time with us

We strive to provide the best of everything to our guests, including a 'wonderful' breakfast, We get to know our guests better over a cup of coffee or tea. Pepper especially enjoys this time to help guests plan their day.

There are so many wonderful places to explore in the Serchio Valley, including Barga, Bagni di Lucca, and Castelnuovo. Whether it's a day trip to Firenze or a hike in the nearby hills, we want our guests to know of the many possibilities for adventure.

We were delighted to meet you and your family. Your visit was too short, though, so we are happy that you're planning your next visit to Casa La Pace.

With appreciation, your hosts – Rusty and Pepper

If you find yourself ever wanting to visit Italy, I highly recommend you visit and stay in the tiny town of Ghivizzano. Casa La Pace is an absolute hidden gem and was the highlight of our trip. Rusty and Pepper are simply wonderful and made our stay so much more than just another trip. I was most looking forward to my time in Florence and while I loved Florence...it was my time in Ghivizzano that I will cherish the most. Our stay at Casa La Pace was just perfect and wouldn't change a thing. I don't normally do reviews but I wanted to take the time to share just how special this place is and recommend it to others looking for a special place in Italy.

we spent 3 days at the begining of our Italy vacation with Rusty and Pepper. This place ROCKS! You feel totally at home. They gave us a tour of Lucca (not to be missed) but more importantly we saw village life! We went shopping on market day with Rusty... met the baker and the neighbors. By far it was the best most relaxed thing we did. In fact we re aligned our agenda and spend 3 more days at then end of vacation... how's that for good.

We absolutely recommend

Room Tip: all the rooms are great. The top floor has a wonderful view of the old town and is large. All the...

My husband and I have traveled to Italy several times before, spending time in most of the major cities but also renting apartments in some of the quieter places like Ischia and Umbria, so we were comfortable planning a month in Italy this May. We arranged three homes/apartments for three weeks in Liguria and then, at my daughter's suggestion, we arranged to spend 6 nights at Casa La Pace. We had stayed in a bed and breakfast our first trip to Italy, but it wasn't a good fit for us to play tourist. We wanted more authenticity, so we struck out on our own. After a week in Ghivizzano with Rusty and Pepper at Casa la Pace, I think our independence may have robbed us of the opportunity to learn about Italy and Italians from innkeepers who know both well.

Not only was Casa La Pace tasteful and clean and welcoming, the beds very comfortable, the breakfast delicious, but Rusty and Pepper took a real interest in helping us plan our activities. Each morning over breakfast, they gave as much advice and guidance as the traveler wanted or needed. They know the train and bus schedules (and both trains and buses are within very close walking distance) and they have restaurant suggestions and reviews. At first I felt as though I was cheating by not making the discoveries on my own, but realistically, they live in Italy and I am visiting Italy. They speak Italian and I mangle it. They guided us into our most exciting, educational, personal, unique, satisfying week in Italy we've ever had.

If you're an Italy virgin or a more experienced traveler, you will experience Italy in a way you haven't before. It was the highlight in a month I'll never forget.

Dear millay,

Casa La Pace Bed and Breakfast would like to thank you for your kind review.

We always hope that our guests will make great memories during their time with us. We enjoy meeting new people and spending time with our guests, but understand that some people prefer to venture out on their own. We try to make ourselves available for questions. But we also are appreciative of the independent traveler who wishes to discover everything on her own.

Pepper loved helping you plan your day, especially train and bus trips. We are thrilled that you appreciated his hard work.

We are delighted that you found your time with us rewarding and memorable. More importantly, we know we've made new friends with you and your husband.

We are glad that you chose Casa La Pace. We look forward to your next visit to Casa La Pace.

Your hosts, Rusty and Pepper

The northern Tuscan town of Ghivizzano is NOT on any guidebook -- BUT it should be! I think Rusty and Pepper will be the ones that put this charming and historic town in everyone's itinerary. Casa La Pace is a home away from home. It's what you dream of when you think about Italian countryside. This a very special B&B + some! Rusty and Pepper take care of your every needs and desires. Look no further -- THIS IS the place to stay!

Dear mimi s,

We would like to thank you for your wonderful review of Casa La Pace Bed and Breakfast. Ghivizzano is a hidden gem, very much 'off the beaten path' and we were delighted to show you around. The Serchio Valley and indeed all of the Province of Lucca have an abundance of amazing sights at every turn. Casa La Pace is close to many popular destinations, but away from the congestion and noise of the big city.

We are thrilled that you valued our hospitality, too. We enjoy pampering our guests, but especially when we know you appreciate it.

We are happy you've 'discovered' Casa La Pace and hope to welcome you again very soon.

With appreciation, your hosts – Rusty and Pepper

It was the little things...a fresh bottle of water appearing when you are just dying of thirst. Makeup remover towelettes in the modern, remodeled bathrooms. Morning talks to plan the days' activities. Rusty and Pepper guided us the entire week and we were so grateful for their expertise and genuine interest in making their Italy our Italy. We had the most marvelous week in charming, rustic Tuscany. Casa la Pace was perfectly located and served us well as the base of our visit. Rusty and Pepper could not have been better hosts...started as hosts and ending as life-long friends. Casa la Pace was spotless and had been beautifully restored. We slept so soundly on a queen bed that slept like a king size. The sound of the stream and the view of the old city of Ghivazzano were at our fingertips when opening the window of our room. Peaceful, charming, relaxing. Flowers everywhere and a cherry tree at the plateau of the walk into the village. There is nothing that will disappoint any visitor. We will return time and time again.
Thank you Rusty and Pepper!
