“Pleasant Stay”
Reviewed 27 April 2014

My wife and I stayed at this Hotel on Friday & Saturday. The Hotel is very interesting rich in history. Some reviews refer to the hotel being tired, this is correct but is fitting with the period of the house, if you want luxury then go to the Hilton and pay Hilton prices. For what we paid for 2 nights with breakfast was very good value for money and I would without doubt visit this hotel again.

The staff are very friendly and the food is good and rooms clean. The breakfast is very well presented and is as good as any of the major big hotels. There is not much in the area in terms of entertainment, but this is an idle location for a nice quite short break. The hotel has its own bar and tea room. There is a steam train just 150 yards up the road that will take you direct to Aberystwyth.

This is a beautiful located hotel in the heart of wales with breath taking views in the local area.

Reading the hotels website and looking at the exciting 'home cooked' food menu, well 'home microwaved' would be more apt.

The bar is run down and dirty (inside windows were stinking) the staff serving food need an education into simple politeness and courtesy when serving customers, a smile costs nothing.

The food was not home cooked put poor quality and over priced for what you get.

Its a shame for such a nice location that a little effort has not been given that would make a big difference.

If your planning a day out followed by a meal here, then really treat yourself and take a packed lunch to eat in the car.

Room Tip: We did not stay as only visited for food

it's an old hotel (i believe it was a very good one 20\30 years ago !) in the middle of nowhere, very close to devils bridge and the waterfalls. we stayed one night (thursday) as we were driving around Wales. The hotel has charme, the staff is nice and the room we stayed was very clean. we had a dinner and breakfast and they were delicious. the beers served are also good and the locals usually go there for a pint. it was a very good stay !

We literally, stopped by the side of the road to see the Devil's Bridge and wound up staying the night. Hotel is nothing fancy but pretty we'll maintained. Restaurant served nice food, if nothing exciting. The most fun was being there the evening of the rugby finals and seeing the locals root for their team! It was loud and boisterous. We Re not sports people, so this was quite an experience.
Rooms were comfortable.
The Devil's Bridge was worth the walk and the small admission fee.

I have been in and out of here since 1961. It hasn't changed much since then. Looked in for lunch a couple of weeks ago. It is a bit dispiriting but the staff were nice and the food reasonable.

It must be dificult to run a hotel here. It is in the middle of nowhere although a very beautiful and remote nowhere but it's not one to attract hoards of visitors especially out of season.

Still a bit scruffy when you come in from the wonderful prospect outside. I suppose I treat it like a good cause and patronise it whenever I'm in the area.

My room was quite basic but had charm, the same sort of charm I associate with older private hotels in New England—just a bit shabby. But the bathroom was ultra-modern, the bedding was clean, I had a lovely second-floor window seat overlooking the gorge, and I smelled no nasty smells (as some have recorded), even on the dankest of fall days. The breakfast was excellent—indeed so filling I did not try the evening pub menu, as planned. One negative comment I would agree with is that the hotel is seriously understaffed: the manager seems to be responsible for just about everything (and he is very nice! just terribly overworked). As for Pontarfynach, you can see the falls, Devil’s Punchbowl, three bridges, etc. inside an hour if you want. Gorgeous views etc. I thought it all made for a good 48-hour getaway, with doing nothing as the chief aim. On the value side, a little pricey for what’s offered. 3.5 stars overall.

My wife and I only visited the tea rooms of the Hafod Hotel, thankfully. Although the hotel and tearooms had an attractive appearance from the outside, the furnishings in the tea rooms were terrible - oil cloth coverings on the tables, dirty seating with a stage in one corner and what appeared to be a pile of rubbish along the back wall. Overhead, there were hundreds of twinkling fairy lights! The food and drink were just palatable, the 2 staff just adequate but the overall appearance and cleanliness distinctly sub standard. The gents toilet was out of order and the ladies toilet dirty. If the standard of the tearooms are indicative of the hotel, we are glad that we were not staying there.
