Plaka has a number of restaurants and a stroll up the street will result in you being "invited" to have any number of meals. Ignore them and go straight to Elpis at the end of the street.

We went there on a busy Sunday night and had a lovely experience.

The waiters were friendly, welcoming and appeared to be enjoying their job. They were having a good time and made the atmosphere far more genuine than that the usual waiter/diner interface.

There were some lovely, even sophisticated, touches on the table and with the general ambience.

The food was delicious. It would be very easy to choose basic Cretan touristy dishes, but go away from these and you will be pleasantly surprised at what is presented. Even the house red was very pleasant, far more so than that being offered at another restaurant in Plaka on a previous evening.

Go there, have a good time and appreciate their attempt to be a little different.

Went to Elpis Taverna on our recent trip to Plaka. The food and service were superb. I can definitely recommend the Kleftiko to you. Plenty choice for vegetarians too. Would certainly go back again.

We've been visiting Plaka for over 10 years now and Mike's Elpis Taverna remains the best. We arrived on Tuesday 8th July and headed straight there. We were not disappointed.

Nice looking restaurant with comfortable seats in the village square. The food was fine, nothing spectacular but nice enough. The house red wine was really nice as was the bread. We used the resurant a couple of times during our stay, between us we tried Mousakka, Kleftiko, chicken with mushroom and chicken with pepper sauce. I really liked the mousakka but wasn't very kean on the chicken and mushrooms. Far too many mushrooms and the chicken had a strange texture. My partner said the same about his chicken but liked the
Kleftiko (don't have it if you don;t like feta, there was loads !.
All in all a decent enough resaurant and we would visit again.

Elpis stands out amongst a clutch of Tavernas in the centre of Plaka with it's contemporary design and layout in comparison to the more traditional appearance of the competition. We had experienced some great dining in Crete and left Elpis to our last night hoping to go out on a high.
Initial impressions count for a lot in my experience and it didn't bode well when the staff seemed far too busy to greet us and we had to wait quite a while for a waiter to take our order. Oh well it did seem fairly busy so it would probably improve.
Eventually our starter arrived with excellent warm bread served on a wooden plater. Very nicely done!
Thankfully the starter was fairly substantial as we waited and waited for our main course. Eventually my wife's arrived but no sign of mine. She's a generous person so I had a quick nibble of her fries - oops not very hot, why not?
After a word with a waiter my main course arrived, nice hot Calamari but cold fries again.
The house white wine was a pleasant surprise and was perhaps the best part of the meal. Overall it was not a good experience with mediocre food and indifferent service, so unlike the warm interaction we had experienced in other restaurants and certainly not deserving a tip when we left.
We'll stick to traditional in future I think.
