“Nice but tired....”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2012

Stayed here for business and it is clear that the Alverton Manor is a beautiful building. The staff make this place a good place to stay but the rooms themselves, although acceptable, need renovating. The bathroom was clean but tired and the room just felt, well, tired.
I would stay again though - the staff were fantastic and the food was excellent.

I stayed at the Alverton Manor for a few nights. Whilst some of the decor may be a bit dated, it is very neat and tidy. This minor point is more than made up by the really friendly staff and the great food.
The staff told me that it's just changed ownership and the new owners are planning to invest quite a bit of money into it.
I used it as a base to explore Cornwall.......good decision!

The alverton looks pretty impressive from the outside and the reception area and entrance don't disappoint, however the rooms are somewhat tired. The beds are comfortable, but sheets, blankets and eiderdowns adorn the beds. The furniture is good quality but dated and used. Bathrooms are big although the hot water takes an age to start. There are notices eluding to this though so to a great problem.

The bar area is very comfortable and the restaurant efficient. The prices in the restaurant however, are really very high for the area and the portion sizes. Not a great deal of choice in town either but Falmouth has some fabulous restaurants.

The staff in this establishment quite clearly make your stay worthwhile. They are attentive, informed and very efficient. Nothing is too much trouble and this is quite rare these days. The hotel is under recent new management so it will be good to see what changes are made for a further review.

Room Tip: The suites are amazing but pricey.

My husband and I had to make an unexpected visit to Cornwall. I tried various hotels and Alverton was the only one with rooms available. This of course did ring alarm bells. We only saw two staff and they were friendly. It seemed as though my husband and I were the only guests.A young chap appeared and carried a small bag upstairs for us which was was most unnecessary .The entrance was not very welcoming at all. Very dirty windows and garden needs attention. The building is extremely tired. On entrance a nasty coat rail with an assortment coat hangers.I decide to go for the expensive room as I was already expecting the worse. The furniture was in very bad taste. Horrid red fabric on small sofa and chairs. Lighting was not sufficient .Dreadful green carpet on bathroom floor, even ran up the side of the bath!!!! Never seen that before. The sheets were clean but the bed mattress was uncomfortable.they obviously think if they put a four poster bed in a room and hang some nasty mesh curtains on
the corners then its one of their special rooms. If your desperate for a room then perhaps you could do a night but if you have time to book then definitely this would not be the place. We couldn't be bothered to have breakfast there so found a nice restaurant. This hotel is way past it's sell by date.

We stayed here overnight at the end of a business trip. Our daughter was a bit daunted by the sheer size of her room as it was amazingly large. The rooms are great old places with wonderful windows. That said they are a little 'faded glory' with some quite out of date furnishings. Please no carpets in bathrooms! However, we love this overall as it makes a change from sterile chain hotels. Can't fault the staff or the service. Needs a bit of TLC all round and then it would be excellent!

Room Tip: ASk for one of the rooms in the old part - as long as you don't long for double glazing!

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 February 2012

I stayed here for 2 nights whilst on business in Truro and actually held a meeting in the hotel on one of the days.

I arrived at about 7pm in the evening and the taxi driver that brought me asked me why I wasn't staying at a different hotel, which I have to say was not a great start to my stay. He then proceeded to give me direction to the reception desk, which was a little hidden with no signage.

On arrival the staff were very polite (perhaps a little over helpful) and checked me in very quickly and with the correct details and insisted on showing me to my room and carrying my luggage which was unecessary and refused.

Getting to the room was a labour and up 5 flights of small stairs, the lighting in poor and the steps could be a little difficult in some circumstances and you begin to wonder what you have let yourself in for. On entering the room, you search for a light switch, which illuminates a lamp, on searching for a ceiling light there is not one there -- which leaves the room really poorly lit, especially when working in the evening. The room was really, really tired and in a poor state. The carpet was old, tired and stained, the decoration was poorly executed with paper coming off the wall and the soft furnishings were very shabby. This was offputting. However the furniture was lovely and seemed to be of a very good quality and functional.

THe bathroom was very poor, the absence of a shower was problematic but not as bad as the fact that there was carpet on the floor and up the sides of the bath and a toilet that flushed only periodically.

The whole room had a feeling of being shabby and done on the cheap (the do not disturb sign was a laminated card held together with a peice of string). The room was comfortable and reminiscent of sleeping in your grandmothers spare room - you sleep well and have your home comforts but you dont feel pampered and things dont have an air of quality.

We had lunch in the hotel on the day of meeting, which was an uninsipiring sandwich and french fries, this was not somwehere that I would eat again.

The staff were very friendly and helpful and worked hard!

Things I liked
Comfortable beds
Quiet (until someone started drilling next to my room on the second morning!!!)
Nice building in nice grounds
Very good location
Great staff

Things I disliked
Shabby and past its best
Food leaves a lot to be desired
No Wi-Fi

I stayed here with my husband and parents at the latter part of 2011. The hotel has a classic, old English feel, exacerbated by the decor, food and importance of service. The hotel benefits from being in a great location to visit Truro. Will definitely visit again and would recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxed weekend break.

Room Tip: It is certainly worth paying for a Suite or Deluxe room as these are more spacious and have beautifu...
