“Friendly with home cooked food”

We have been going regularly over the winter for Sunday dinner which is amazing. Today we went for afternoon tea and cakes what a delight to walk afterwards around the water gardens. The cakes are delicious but not good for your figure! Would definitely recommend this place.

“an idyllic spot”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

We visited Penrose water gardens on a beautiful sunny day . Approached along leafy lanes, ample parking ushered us into the cool and friendly Lilly Cafe where coffee was served on a terrace overlooking the extensive and colourful Lilly ponds. A walk around the ponds led us to a woodland walk and back to the cafe via the very productive poly tunnels. Lunch was reasonable and to be recommended while the staff, both in the cafe and gardens were friendly and welcoming. All together a lovely place to visit.

“Pleasant without a wow factor”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

Billed as Cornwall's only water gardens and disabled friendly. It's just outside Truro and reached by narrow lanes (where you're hoping no ones coming the other way) On arriving you go pass a venue set up for Wedding receptions with some car parking but as you carry on 50 yards you reach the main car park for at best 20 cars. This attraction is FREE to enter so it starts well and covers many ponds mainly with different coloured water lillies. The walk ways are grass approx. a metre wide between ponds it's difficult to tell how deep the water is but children would need to be kept close by some ponds were dry and looking quite sad so my guess would be in the main 18 inches deep (but this would vary from pond to pond. Pushing a wheelchair would be very difficult around the garden. For me it was pleasant to see masses of different lillies and other plants but none of them were named and all could have done with some tidying up. A few places to sit as you walk around but generally very limited
Apart from one pond none contain any fish at all which was disappointing it would have been great to have a bigger pond by the café as a focal point containing fish to bring the pond to life. From the café platform the view was ok and the colours and ponds looked much better than close up. The shop was very average but clearly some extension work was being done. Plants for sale was limited and poorly marked up. We didn't have food but tea was £1.80 a pot for one and took longer to arrive than it should have. Toilets available and a small area for children to play safely while you had tea. Needs one larger special pond rather than strips of rectangle ponds. Place was nice and quite with a gentle sound of running water. So much more could be done to improve it

This cafe is well worth a visit whether rain or shine! It's especially enjoyable on a warm day when you can sit outside or explore the lily ponds! A lovely setting and a good menu with friendly and helpful staff. Service is always good and a great place to relax!!
