B&B at the Fieldings
Ranked #15 of 20 Truro B&B and Inns
Reviewed 6 August 2006

Fieldings Guest House, 35 Treyew Road, in Truro, is the perfect location for seeing Cornwall. Mike and Averil Inglefield are the perfect hosts. The en-suite room we had was bright and quiet, the beds were comfortable, and the food was fabulous. Guests have the choice of a full English breakfast (eggs, Canadian bacon, sausage, potatoes, tomatoes, mushrooms) or a continental breakfast (cereal, croissants, yogurt, fresh fruit, juices, tea, and toast). What I loved most about Fieldings was the books. There are books everywhere – in the bedrooms, bathrooms, dining room, hallways. There are books about Cornwall and England, as well as novels set in Cornwall. They also have a wonderful collection of children’s books. Guests are welcome to take the books to their rooms.

In addition to having a B&B that is centrally located for touring Cornwall, Mike Inglefield is an incredibly knowledgeable tour guide. We hired him to drive us for three days. He knows every road in Cornwall. The money we paid him was so well-spent. We were able to view the magnificent scenery while he drove on those impossibly narrow Cornish roads. He took us to places we never would have found on our own. He also knows great places to eat. I will never forget the Knickerbrocker Glory he convinced me to have in a small café on Lizard Point, the southern most point in England! I don’t know what was more unforgettable – the ice cream sundae or the breath-taking scenery all around us. Mike offers five tours that cover the whole of Cornwall or guests can self-design a tour. Mike was so accommodating to even our strangest requests. Being Daphne DuMaurier fans, my traveling companion and I wanted to see Frenchman’s Creek. With his ordinance maps, Mike found it and and we tramped through the woods to reach it. To see the tours that Mike offers, check out: http://www.cornwalltour.com/. With so much to see and such narrow roads, I highly recommend hiring a guide like Mike Inglefield.

We have just returned from a magical stay in Cornwall and the West Country of England. The best decison we made was to spend 4 nights in the Fieldings Guest House in Truro, and to hire Mike Inglefield for 3 days of touring. Mike asked what we were interested in and wanted to see, and specially tailored our full-day tours to pack it all in. In addition to seeing the highlights of Cornwall - from Tintagel, to St. Michael's Mount and Land's End, Penzance, Mousehole, St. Ives, Porthcurno, Falmouth, castles, churches, clayworks, coves and coasts, the Lizard and Bodmin Moor, we also saw the intimate backroads of Cornwall that tourists seldom see, finding ancient quoits, standing stones, filming sites for books and movies, old wheal cotes, coastal walks and harbours, du Maurier's Jamiaca Inn and Frenchman's Creek, and incredible views we would never have found on our own. As we covered the West Country, Mike filled us with his knowledge of the area, historical, economic, literary, cultural, and provided books and ordinance maps as necessary to answer questions, and find spots mentioned in books. We could not have asked for a more knowledgable, accomodating, safe driving, personable and generous guide than Mike. We would hire him again. He was incredible.

Staying in Mike and Averil's lovely, lovely home in Truro was a treat. Our large, immaculate en suite room at The Fieldings in Truro B&B was elegant, comfortable and homey and included a delicious full English breakfast. The beautifully decorated house is filled with an amazingly eclectic range of books - in the rooms, on the window sills, in the dining room and bathrooms, and Averil produced more tailored to our interests and questions - Cornish folklore, local authors, guidebooks, Thelwell's pony books, histories, art, - they have it all. The house is a treat the eyes as well as the mind from the tasteful furniture to the fresh flowers, the lovely pictures, collections of china, glass, toby mugs and redware - all bespeak a host and hostess with pride in their home and their B&B. I highly recommend it. It was a gem.

Planning my trip to Cornwall England I came across Mike and Averil Inglefield's website for their bed & breakfast called The Fieldings in Truro Cornwall. What appealed to me being a solo woman traveler was that Mike offered custom tours of Cornwall which I could design around my interests (I'm too chicken to drive in England.) I booked many months in advance and Mike provided swift emails to all my questions. On my arrival I was made very welcome, and shown to a pleasant room with a bathroom next door. After a full English breakfast Mike and I would head out for a day of exploring different parts of Cornwall, not only would we hit the places on my list (like Tintagel Castle birthplace of King Arthur..I even got to stand in Merlin's cave!) but all kinds of places that Mike suggested "Fancy a cliff walk?" or "Let's try and find the Lost Church of Prium." Which we did! Through all our adventures Mike made for a very easy going guide and I loved tapping into his vast knowledge of Cornwall and all things Cornish. We would end the day (my favorite way) with a stop at a pub, and back at Fieldings I would fall into bed a very happy camper. So thanks Mike and Averil for a trip of a lifetime!

We spent two weeks with Mike and Averil Inglefeld at their home, which has three guest rooms in the main city in Cornwall--Truro. In Great Britain, B&Bs are not necessarily posh but clean and comfortable. It is more like spending time with a family you've just met. It was perfect for the three of us (two shared a room and one was by herself).

What makes this B&B special is that Mike Inglefeld provides tours too. So not only was he out host, but he was our tour guide. We started with an overall plan before we ever arrived in the UK through back-and-forth e-mails, but each morning after breakfast we fine-tuned and even changed plans.

Each day we piled in Mike's station wagon and he was our guide to much of Cornwall. We didn't return til early evening most days. Each morning we hiked bluffs or along rivers and saw new country on the way. Since he grew up in Cornwall, Mike had many tales to tell about wherever we went. Each mid-day we stopped at a different pub and tried local foods and brews. Our favorite brew was Bulldog!

Then in the afternoons, we toured lovely historic estakes and gardens and sometimes took another walk. Each day we toured towns and charming villages and had opportunities to shop.

We marveled at the green, green fields of Cornwall and of the historic hedgerows that bordered the fields and narrow country lanes.

The hedgerows are not only beautifu, but fascinating. They are made of stone with multiple plants full of flowers growing so thick you cannot see the stone. And they were often tall, which made it like driving in a two-way, single-lane maze. Fortunatey, Mike was excellent at backing up. Amazing that the cars weren't all banged up in Cornwall! Towns were also full of very narrow lanes. I am so impressed with the Cornish drivers.

With our host being our guide, he was able to show us so much and yet fine tune the trip to best meet our needs as he got to know us better. It was a wonderful way to see the country, and made a trip for us that we will long remember.

There were 3 of us women and we were following a trip that one of us took 30 years ago. We hiked the beautiful Cornwall coast and also some inland hikes and we visited a beautiful garden and home every afternoon. We got to every lovely little town that we have read about in books and also spent two days at the Dauphne du Maurier festival. Our guide, Michael Inglefield, knew the history of the areas we hiked and visited and was able to make the area come alive. He also knew all the best Pubs for lunch every day where we had great food and sampled the local beer.It was also the best way to deal with the very high currency exchange as these meals were large enough to be our dinner and we ended up with tea and light fare in the B&B each evening. His wife, Averil, was very gracious and fixed wonderful breakfasts for us each morning. I would recommend this trip for anyone who would like an active vacation tailored to your fitness level and interests.
