“End of season but no let up in quality”
Reviewed 14 October 2013

We had 7 days half board at the White Rocks Hotel between 6th & 13th October 2013. Whilst the 'A la Carte' restaurant was closed the day before we arrived the buffet restaurant and all other amenities appeared to continue to the full. The food was excellent albeit that sometimes it could have been hotter. The bar, bedrooms and common areas are of extremely high standard. The pool area is well maintained with a snack bar. The cocktail bar only opened on one evening. The staff were superb and we kept our room until leaving at 5pm. At this time of year it was mainly couples. Thompson Holidays were our agents and, unfortunately, dropped all but one of the excursions. However, easy walk to Argostolli (50 minutes) and we used the local bus service for days out to Sami and Poros which were cheap but wonderful journeys. Lovely local beaches and good swimming in the sea.

Room Tip: We had a sea view just above the bar - would be quieter away from the bar when in full season. (Room...

Having returned 9th September 2013 from 2 great weeks at the White Rocks Hotel & Bungalows in Lassi, Kefalonia, I’d like to get the only ‘bad point’ out of the way. Going down for our first night in the restaurant, you wait to be seated by the Maitre‘d who stands by the entrance, asks your room number then directs you to a table (this happens every night). On giving our room number and waiting to be seated, he said we could not come into the restaurant as my husband had ‘toes’ showing in his leather sandals. After complaining, we were sent to the reception where they took out a sign saying there was a ‘dress code’ for the evening – fully covered-in shoes for men – this was very embarrassing. We then had to have our meal in our room and next day go into town to buy a pair of ‘covered in’ shoes. When booking our holiday, at no point were we told of this ‘code’, even our Rep said this was going to go into next years’ brochure – which didn’t help us this year – so beware men, please take a pair of completely covered-in shoes or you will suffer the same fate (which we did see a few times over the 2 weeks). Apart from this, we thought the White Rocks Hotel was a great place to stay. The whole area of the hotel and bungalows must stretch nearly ¾ mile along the cliff top – very impressive, wow what a view! The hotel was spotless so were the rooms. Towel, pool towel and linen change every day which was great, kettle & cups in room too (no coffee/tea as you had to buy your own). There was plenty to choose from food-wise every night (we didn’t see the same food twice over 2 weeks). The pool area (which was a lovely walk through the gardens) was brilliant (it had a toilet/shower too). The two main beaches (blue flag) are worth a visit - the one just next to hotel is best not as busy as the next one). Walking into Lassi is best done through the gardens of the hotel otherwise you’ll risk life and limb on the road as there are two blind bends. Lassi is quite small but has a quite few good bars & restaurants otherwise get the bus into Argostoli (the capital town) which is only 3 km away (1.50 euro on bus) – beware the buses start at 8.30 in the morning and finish at 8.30 in the evening so you have to get a taxi in & back which is a set fare of 7 euros (either way) – the reception order one for you and we never waited more than 5 minutes for it. Argostoli is brilliant, a great town square with lots of bars/restaurants around it. If you go to the harbour in the morning before 11 am, you can see Henry & Henrietta the resident loggerhead turtles being fed by the fishermen – a great sight! Also, you must go over to Lixouri on the ferry (5 euro each way) which only takes 30 minutes and a lovely sea journey. Lixouri is quite small but also has a lovely square with bars around it and also a small beach – well worth a visit. We would definitely return to Kefalonia and probably the White Rocks Hotel again with the appropriate footwear!!

Room Tip: We had a 'garden' room (222) - which is on the front of the hotel (ground level) - no noise...

The White Rocks is a great place for a quick and relaxing holiday. The drive from the airport takes only about 10 minutes and the flight was just under 3 from Gatwick. So the hassle of getting to the place is absolutely minimum.

We had bungalow 59, which was the furthest away from the main building. The walk to and from the main building took about 10 minutes and isn't for people that have walking problems. We quite enjoyed it as the view was just lovely and enjoyable. Downside is that the bungalows in that row only have partial sea view (about 25%) and that the "garden" isn't really nice or enjoyable. However, it was nice and quiet the whole time.

The food was ok. It was pretty much the same every day, but it tasted alright. We didn't really experience huge queues for breakfast or dinner, but then we had breakfast the latest possible and waited with dinner until after 8. The choice at breakfast was still huge by 9.30 and staff continuously refilled empty trays. The staff was generally friendly and happy to help and accommodating. We could check-out a good 2 1/2 hours later so we had chance to spend our last morning by the beach and still were able to shower and get ready for our journey back home.

The view and beaches are the things that made the holiday for me so enjoyable. There were people at the beaches, but it never was overly crowded. The water was incredibly clear and there are some great snorkeling places. It was great to sit in the bar in the evenings and just enjoying the sunset with the wide view that you just don't get living in a city. It was really relaxing and we could recharge our batteries nicely.

All in all, I can only recommend the White Rocks.

White rocks is on the main road just 10 minutes from the airport. It's in a beautiful spot in a sheltered cove. The walk into Lasi takes about 20 minutes and there is a bus to Argostoli, the capitol, costing 1 euro 50 cents and taking about 15 minutes. There is a coast road walk to Argostoli that takes about 90 minutes and takes in the famous water wheel and lighthouse. A tip here : Walk into Argostoli as its downhill. The walk back is a bit more strenuous. A trip to Friskardo is a must. A beautiful Harbour surrounded by little cafes and restaurants. The underground lake, cave, and church are also well worth a visit and the round the island coach trip takes in all three. Kefalonia is a stunning island with views you will remember. White Rocks is a beautiful venue but remember... get a sea view room if you can !

Room Tip: Pay the little extra and get a sea view room. Odd numbered rooms face the sea and even numbered room...

I have very little to add to the reviews already posted. I will say at the outset that I am not a fan of half-board anywhere - but that out of the way I was consistently impressed with the food at this hotel - really good deserts and I thought a wide choice. I particularly liked the option to swap dinner for lunch - lunch was really very good. Ate generally around 9pm and never had to wait. I don't really understand the dress code - it seems a bit hap-hazard; can't imagine in which universe some of the men would be classed as "elegantly dressed".

Room was very good - junior suite; spacious with great wifi once we had a booster installed by reception with minimum fuss. Spotlessly clean.

Private beach a bit of a wash-out - and a misnomer. Best bet is Platys Gialos (the larger beach now called "Costa Costa" I would avoid).

We felt "very young" amongst the client group which made a change...It was virtually all Brits by the way.

The staff are really very good, first class and I was pleased to find that the owners invest properly in training their people, sending them to Athens for courses etc. For us, the new bar set in the a la carte restaurant saved the hotel. Really nice place to sit and have a drink in the evening - you need this place as Lassi is really a non-event. I include only photographs of this bit of the hotel because it opened in August this year and obviously some people will not have seen it finished etc.

I probably would not go back to Kefalonia again (I would consider Ithaca though, which is beautiful) and I would not return to Lassi, but I think this hotel is the best thing about the whole resort - it is obviously very successful and does what it does well. I wish them continued success.

Room Tip: You pay for what you get.

If you are looking for a relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings then look no further than the White Rocks Hotel. My partner and I stayed in a sea view double room in July 2013 and have just booked a sea view bungalow room for June 2014; can't wait to go back. Kefalonia has some of the most stunning views I have ever seen and the hotel certainly makes the most of their location; views from the restaurant, beach and cocktail bars are amongst the best. Food was of a high standard and with plenty of variety we never got bored during our 10 night stay. Staff are so helpful and friendly, particularly Yiannis who we always looked forward to chatting with each evening. I have read some reviews about excessive queues for meals, but I can honestly say the longest we had to wait was no more than 5 minutes, no great hardship considering the views of the ocean and sunset we had whilst waiting and anyway you're on holiday so what's the rush! If I had one minor criticism it is that a few more bar staff would have been helpful, both in the main bar and coacktail bar, however we have no complaint with the friendly service in both bars, by the very busy staff. I would certainly recommend that you book sea view accommodation and request a high floor room to make the most of the views. We fell in love with the island on our first visit in 2012 and our stay at White Rocks only cemeneted this further.
