Very interesting history in saving this site from the motorway. Interactive displays are fun as well as very informative

The Welwyn Roman Baths are situated in a small museum underneath the A1 motorway on the outskirts of Welwyn. The baths were discovered shortly before the motorway was built and it was decided to create a sort of vault under the new motorway so that they were preserved. The museum is one room with the remains of the baths in the centre with information around the outside. Entry is £3.50 per adult with children being free. There is plenty of information to explain what life would have been like in Roman times and how the baths were discovered. There are also activities for children (Roman games, colouring, dressing up). There are no toilet or food facilities on site. Well worth a visit but it won't take more than an hour to see everything here.

You would never know it was there. Having discovered it in the middle of the planned A1(M) construction route they built a steel vault over the top to protect it for posterity. The motorway runs 9 metres above it!!
Well laid out, masses of information on the walls and our guide was a fund of knowledge.
Originally part of a much bigger complex, which has now all disappeared, they have managed to save this small part.

An hour well spent at the Welwyn Roman Baths. What a pleasant place to visit; definitely eye opening. Maybe its just me but to be so close to the exhibit was really exciting; I felt so part of it. The surround of the exhibit was good too with so much to read and see. There was even a video you could watch. Very educational indeed. There was also a skeleton of a woman found at the site apparently… a simple place but very very intriguing. Lots of parking available too. And entry was only £3.50 each adult. Unfortunately no cafe but there was a lovely garden outside that you could sit and perhaps bring your own picnic too (better check first though).
The lady (probably a volunteer) at the entrance was very sweet, charming and very knowledgeable. She gave us a quick brief about the bath on display. Thank you so much for that.
Frankly, the drive to get there was lovely too … its a lovely part of Hertfordshire. Well worth a pop in.
Be aware though it is only open from 2pm to 5pm on weekends only. Exceptions during school holidays.
