“Had the best time”
Reviewed 1 September 2011

I heard about Yellowriver from a good friend and got in touch with Andrew before I came at the middle of August. I had the best time ever. It was great to stay with the family, to help working at the camp ground, the coffee farm, the whole trip was just great.
Befre my arrival I had planned to do a tour to the Machu Picchu, but the stay at Quellomayo entailed everything I could have wished for. The best local food, coffee, home made hot chocolate, fresh baths in the nearby river, building a brick bbq.
The family made the stay unforgettable and I promise I will come back here.

So if you are looking for something special. go to Quellomayo

Yellow River really was the best place we stayed in south America! Andy and Tatiana are very friendly and welcoming and we were treated as part of the family straight away. A local cab driver we asked for directions in Santa Maria as we were walking told him we were heading for their place and he came out to meet us with his dog. Tati is a great cook and the food was excellent with fresh juice from their many fruit trees and even home made hot chocolate from their own cocoa beans! The organic coffee they grow is amazing and we took half a kilo home. Really we cant thank them enough for a great stay and it's in a perfect place to stop off if you're heading to Machu Picchu on the cheap!

We stumbled across Yellow River on a Lonely Planet forum on a budget way to get to Machu Picchu. We decided to spend the night on the way back to Cusco, and are so glad we did! Andrew and his wife Tati were the most gracious hosts, they taught us how to roast our own coffee and even help with the washing process because we were so interested. It is this tiny hidden little village on the side of the river. We were unsure what to expect when we showed up, but as soon as we arrived in their welcoming, modern home our uncertaintity left. Turns out they are registered with Woofing.com also, so my boyfriend and I are looking to come back and help on the farm. Perhaps I am going on about this farm stay, but we missed out on doing the Inca trail so this was a great way to have our own little Peruvian adventure on the way to Machu Picchu...and a --- cheaper!

We reached the tiny village Quellomaya by minibus from Cusco to Santa Maria and took a taxi to the hostel Yellow River. The owners, a young peruan/English couple welcomed us with warm hospitality and we could learn a lot about coffee planting and harvesting and had delicious meals.
The recommended to us a one-day-walk from Quellomayo to Agua Calientes below Machu Picchu. It was an exciting hike along the Urubamba Valley ( 3 hours) to Santa Teresa. After a short minibusride we continued our hike from Hidroelectrica to Agua Calientes (3 hours) following the rails of the small train. So we could see Machu Picchu on the next day.

We just figured out that was no possible to reach Aguas Calientes by car because of the landslide when we met the owners of Yellow River. So we decide to stop in their place, something that I would never regret. Yellow river is an amazing place, deep in the forest between Cuzco and Macchu Picchu. Is not that easy to find but ones you reach it you will understand why it worth so much to spend some nights there!
Rooms are big and clean, while you are awake you can explore the nature around the place or just swing in a hammock, but the best part is the food. Food is something really special in this place, from breakfast to dinner you'll try typical product of the region home grown like bananas, avocado, cafe, chocolate and a lots more!!!
The owners and the other people are staying there are lovely and always ready to make you comfortable!!!

IF YOU ARE ON THE WAY TO MACCHU PICCHU DONT MISS THIS AMAZING PLACE!!!

I wasn't sure what to expect from the Peruvian countryside having only visited Lima and Cusco so far (along with the obligatory Inca Trail of course) and was quite amazed at how varied Peru actually is. The drive to this area was amazing due to the amazing views which change a lot along the way from Cusco. One minute you are in a remote, barren wilderness and the next you are in lush cloud forest with banana treees everywhere. The scenery around Yellow River is pretty staggering. Mountainsides shoot up hundreds of metres around you and a roaring river flows through the valley bottom just a few minutes walk away. Although I wasn't there for long I did a few of the many walks around the area and felt that I was genuinelly off the beaten track. The family that runs the restaurant and guest house are very welcoming and helpful and speak good english. The food was also very good and different from what I had tried elsewhere in Peru. There is also a farm adjacent to the guethouse where they grow lots of their own produce for the restaurant. I think that they also have opportunities to get involved with this but I was there to relax and explore and not to work. Overall a great experience and one a very different one to my other travels.
