We remember you well as your "lovely lady" snapped at our assistant manager when she was seating you accusing our assistant manager of looking at her in a strange way and upset our assistant manager to the point where she did not want to serve you again so I personally looked after you for the rest of your visit. That said, I do also remember doing my best to welcome you including talking to you about the show you had just seen - I remember that you had been to see Buddy Holly and that you said it was great. We do always do our best to welcome our customers (even if they have just upset a member of our staff) and we can only apologise if you do not think we managed that on this occasion.

As we remember it - you arrived about 5.45am in the evening before we had started serving food. Obviously at this early hour we were obviously still empty in the round restaurant area so it is hardly surprising that there was little personality. We served your food at 6pm and you left before our other evening customers started to arrive.

“Still great!”
Reviewed 1 April 2014

We had lunch at Drusilla's a couple of times in March - one trip was supposed to be for breakfast but one of us overslept, so we're still looking forward to trying that.

I'm happy to report that Drusilla's is as good as ever. Their ham, egg & chips never disappoints, and on the second trip we both had the 'menu de jour', which was melon starter, a lamb main course and cheesecake & ice cream for dessert, all for £12.90.

I'd checked out the Spring menu on the website beforehand, so I recognised the 'slow roast shoulder of lamb & Shepherd’s pie butternut & potato puree, pea & mint jus' and was glad it was the offer of the day. Wow! It was delicious: the sort of thing you enjoy from the first mouthful to the last.

The cheescake was light and creamy, the ice cream was great and the redcurrants gave the right tangy contrast. I had a different flavour cheescake on the previous visit, and that was lovely, too.

Now, about breakfast...

Thank you so much for visiting us (and loving us) again. We are delighted that you love our new Spring menu - the lamb really is delicious isn't it (I had the pleasure of eating Kevin's "trial run" and, like you, loved every mouthful)! We look forwards to welcoming you back again soon - perhaps for breakfast???

“Had high hopes for this place”
Reviewed 30 March 2014 via mobile

Me and my mum came here one afternoon and had the 2 course meal off the lunch menu. I had poached eggs with a hollandaise sauce which i actually then got told it was cheese sauce! Slightly different, although it was rather tasty. My mum had the salmon with cream cheese and chives, this too was also good apart from half the salmon slices were browning. We both ordered the chicken marinated in lemon and herb with a cranberry jus sauce, served with braised cabbage, peppered potatoes. When we had finished our starters we were told there was no cabbage so we could choose from brocolli, carrots or peas i think. The main arrived, it was the strangest meal i have ever tried. The 'cranberry jus' had no hint of cranberries in it, it tasted like lard or suet! After one mouthful we couldnt eat anymore, the veg was hard as you like and the 'peppered potatoes' were so strange. I did complain at the time and we chose something else. We were so put off by the main course that we decided to just have cheese and crackers as you cant really go wrong with that, can you? Well the crackers were stale, the grapes had little hairs on them from either fluff from kitchen cloths or i dont know what. So disappointed. Started off quite well and just ended horribly. The staff were nice, the toilets in the bar area needed a re-vamp and the cleanliness of the whole place was really not good. Beautiful from the outside, such a shame.

Your review can be divided into 4 parts - the opening in which we substituted items, the middle which is subjective rather than objective, the cheese which frankly surprised us and the comments about our lovely old building. I will answer these parts one at a time.

Part 1
We serve fresh produce, and very occasionally we run out of items which means that they might need to be substituted. As long as the customer is informed and offered alternative choices we see nothing wrong in this. If you ate smoked salmon regularly you would know that this fish naturally contains darker, more browny, colours and that this is not an indication that there is anything at all wrong with it.

Part 2
This part really did irritate us as food is subjective and habitual (not everyone likes the same things, in the same way that not everyone enjoys the same music, and when you eat out food might be prepared in a different way to how you do it at home). The fact that you found the chicken strange is frankly strange in itself as many of our customers have really enjoyed this dish and we have recieved numerous compliments about it. Both the chef and your waitress tasted the sauce when you returned your meal, both agreed that the cranberry flavour was quite mild but that it had a pleasant taste and felt your comment was very sujective and unfair.
The veg comment we felt was again subjective and we could easily and happily have cooked your veg some more if you had asked.

Part 3
We think it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY your biscuits were stale as we get through an enourmous amount of cheese biscuits and they just don't stay in the kitchen long enough to get stale - however if by a fluck you did get a stale biscuit we do apologise - and again if we had known it would have been instantly changed. The fluff you refer to on your grapes is a complete mystery to us - aplogogies again - we do wash all our fruit before serving.

And finally ... how dare you suggest that the cleanliness at Drusilla's is not good enough - we are speechless! Perhaps you were just feeling the momentum of writing when you decided to write that but you should be aware that such comments, especially when made on such a puplic forum, are libelous. And ... we love Drusilla's - she is not a cloned imitation of an old country pub - she is the real deal with all the quirks and idiosyncracies that go with it! Perhaps a cloned pub with pre packaged food would suit your expectations better - sorry that just isn't us!

I'm really pleased that you thought everything about Drusilla's is nice! You really should come and try one of our walks - they are a really popular way of working up a good appetite (so perhaps you might have room for pudding next time). Thank you for recommending us - see you next time!
