“Perfect Honeymoon Location”
Reviewed 16 October 2010

The Ritz Carlton was the perfect place for our honeymoon. We wanted peace and quiet and that is exactly what we got. It is located in a very secluded area, but not too far from restaurant and night life. My husband loves to golf so getting a discount to the Plantation Course was a perk. The hotel staff service is excellent and everything is perfectly cleaned and organized.

I stayed here last July on a special wedding anniversary trip with my husband. I was hesitant to stay at a big chain hotel like this, after spending my honeymoon on a private Fiji island, but I took the advice of my travel agent Renee Meyer, who owns Unforgettable Honeymoons, who is an ace at this and extremely well traveled. When we drove from the airport to the Ritz we were a bit worried because things looked fairly dry and barren and we saw one hotel lined up after another like miami beach. I didn't see the beautiful green lushness I expected. But low and behold, as soon as we got into the entrance to the Ritz we saw the brilliant green we were looking for, as we drove in we became very excited, because we knew that the Ritz was no ordinary hotel. The view from the lobby was incredible, looking out we saw other Hawaiian islands, amazing pool area, and a lovely long stretch of private looking beach!!! our room was outstanding, hard wood floors, incredible marble bath. Then the club lounge, wow, that was fantastic, a lady named Athena greeted us and we felt like royalty. She went above and beyond. the club was great, free breakfast, free drinks, tons of goodies for lunch, appetizers before dinner, it was practically an all inclusive. We grabbed cold waters on the way to our hikes, had romantic glass of wine before dinner on the terrace, all part of their CLUB experience. this I would highly recommend!!! the beach at the Ritz is fabulous, long, and very secluded with no other hotels around, this is very private. We watched sea turtles every night bob their heads above the water, an entire family of them at the end of the beach. We had a great dinner at Banyan tree, and a wonderful couples massage in our own bungalow/ cottage. the spa is top notch, EVERY person who worked at Ritz said hello to us every where we went and they smiled and asked if they could help us. this is truly the best place to stay on Maui. Before we left out agent had given us some free coupons for discounts at some great restaurants in Maui, I would recommend Dukes, David Pauls Island Grill and Pacificos. also Annebelle and warrens magic show is a hoot and well worth it. I cannot wait to go back to the Ritz Carlton Maui

Spend the extra money to get the Club Level rooms. You can virtually eat three light meals per day in a private club room with drinks all day long. Food is great. Exactly the balanced, great nutrution meals I would eat every day at home (if my home had a Club Level) With prices at Kapalua or even Kaanapali restaurants we saved a lot of money. Great, great service too.

We decided to splurge a little for our honeymoon, so we stayed at the Ritz-Carlton. The day we arrived on Maui, the highway to the west end of the island was closed off due to a forest fire, so the R-C put us up for a complimentary night at the Grand Wailea - it can pay to book with a 5 star hotel!

Some main features about the Ritz:

Location - it is located at a relatively remote part of the island, in the northwest section. Pretty much the only way to get anywhere is by going directly south, then east toward central Maui. The highway to the north is pretty rough, and only for the (very) adventurous. It's also on the windiest part of the island. However, there are no other hotels nearby, so it's relatively secluded, if you like that sort of thing (which we do).

Grounds - elegant and beautifully maintained, and not so over the top or touristy as the Grand Wailea. The property also has a lot of acreage - there are several tennis courts, a nature center, a huge pool, small trails, several restaurants and eating areas. One of the executive chefs has started a very ambitious garden on the grounds with the goal of growing enough to supply the restaurants without needing to rely on food flown in from the mainland. He happened to be there while we were poking around and gave us a quick tour of the place himself.

Rooms - we had the partial sea view with king bed. The room and bathroom were fairly spacious, and we had our own lanai (balcony) that overlooked the pool, but you could also see the ocean and mountains very clearly. The view was gorgeous, especially when breakfasting on room service on the balcony! (Which had great selection and was absolutely delicious by the way).

Beach scene - the closest beach is the DT Fleming. This is a pebbly/coarse sand beach with vigorous crashing waves, due to the wind. Still swim-able, but not without some signs indicating what swimmers might be at risk for. Not the greatest for peaceful sunbathing - save that for the pool.

Restaurants - We really wanted to try Banyan Tree, but all the R-C's restaurants are open only on certain days of the week. We didn't realize this and never got a chance to eat there. But we did try Kai Sushi, which was pretty good, classic sushi.

Service - excellent, couldn't ask for better service. Keep in mind though, we are pretty independent folks and like to strike out on our own, so we don't depend on concierge service at all.

Overall, we would probably come back to the Ritz. My spouse definitely would, but I would consider staying on Southern Maui just for a different experience (calmer, sunnier beaches). We couldn't have asked for a better stay on our honeymoon!

My wife and I stay at the Ritz Kapalua for the second phase of our honeymoon in late September 2010. The overall experience was very good however there are a few things that could be improved at the hotel.

First, the good. We stayed on the Club Level and the staff their could not have been better. Laura, one of the concierge's there, helped us choose activities that were a bit more adventurous, which was more to our liking. The food and service in the lounge was also fantastic, and really helped us stay within our budget. The rest of the hotel staff was very accommodating and friendly as well, particularly the valet/bell hops.

We had dinner at the resort 2 nights; one at Banyan Tree, the other at Kai Sushi. The Banyan Tree food was delicious, though very expensive. My wife's a vegetarian so she had a vegetable "entree" for dinner and it might as well have been a side dish based on the portion size. The kicker, it was about $30 for the dish. The good thing was we had a light snack and drink in the Club Lounge prior to heading to our reservation so we were able to keep the total bill under $200 (a huge accomplishment for this place imo). Our Kai Sushi experience was a tale of 2 nights. We arrived at our reservation time and the maitre d was rude and inattentive. We told her we had reservations at 6pm that was supposed to be by the pool side window however, we noticed right away that both tables were taken up. We told her that we specifically requested this but she didn't seem to care and seated us elsewhere anyway. I got the feeling that since the restaurant opened at 5:30pm, she made the mistake of seating people at our table out of negligence. We considered walking out but decided to just move our seats inside to a quieter, more intimate table. After that, everything went smooth. Our server was fantastic and the food was good, though we've had better in NYC. Overall, a plus experience and I would recommend this place for a light meal.

The bad. The pool area is just awful. As others have mentioned, there is no staff around most of the time and the pool chair covers are downright disgusting. You're better off taking the covers off and lay on the bare chair. Because of the way it was down there, we basically used the pool for a total of 30 min over 5 days. Another "bad" thing was the room. The room itself was nice however it seemed to smell like b.o. From the moment the bell hop opened the door til the time we left, there was a hint of b.o. in the air. It was kind of nasty.

Overall though we had a very good experience and we'd likely stay here again.

My sister was married at the Ritz Carlton in June 2010 and we had 9 people total staying at the hotel. Upon arrival, my significant other and I were upgraded to an amazing suite - 2 bathrooms, hardwood floors (granted, fake hardwood floors), living room, large lanai - it was amazing! The staff are all extremely friendly and the grounds are immaculately kept. The pool is quiet with plush lounge chairs and you never feel crowded. The view from the hotel of the ocean is spectacular, and DT Flemming beach is lovely and not crowded. Our favorite part of the day was having Mai Tais at the bar down by DT Flemming and we were frequently comped drinks. One recommendation is to to eat up the road (a few minutes walk) at the General Store for breakfast versus in the pricey hotel restaurant, which was perfect for us. The food was good and more reasonably priced and you can even charge purchases to your Ritz Carlton room. We left the Ritz Carlton after the wedding to go to the Hyatt on Kaanapali and it was a real disappointment after our experience at the Ritz. However, wouldn't recommend this hotel for children. The ages of our group was 23-55 and for us it was perfect. We cannot wait to go back someday!

Quite disappointed. They barely met expectation. Did not upgrade even with 20% occupancy. We told them we were on our honeymoon. I had called them and told them that also. Asked if they could do anything special, like chocolate or flowers in the room etc. However was not given any special treatment given the event. We stayed for 5 days. Staff does not greet when you come out, pool side service was inadequate unless you book a cabana. Does not let you park in the valet only parking when the lot is 90% empty!!
Even the hotel is away from all the action. It really in the west of maui. Most places to see are quite a drive from here. Go for the Four Seasons. Good Location, great service and goes above and beyond. And all this for a price less than that what you pay at Ritz.
