“Basic but OK”
Reviewed 25 December 2013

Stayed 3 nights at Craven Heifer. Rooms are external to the hotel which means a quick run to the hotel if it is raining.
Rooms are clean and basic although our room did have signs of damp. Excellent views of the Yorkshire Dales from the bedroom.
Hotel very friendly - we did not eat here as we were visiting family in the area.
Only problem was that returning to the hotel at 10.00pm on a Saturday evening, and looking forward to a drink, found the hotel closed and no-one around. It seems that they had a birthday party earlier and as everyone had gone home at 9.30pm they closed the hotel.
Our family members have eaten here before and told us the Sunday carvery is good.
Breakfast was continental and plentiful.
Overall good value for money and great location.

Although arriving early, we were welcomed with a friendly spirit and shown to our room promptly. This friendliness and helpfulness from the staff continued throughout the weekend and was a feature of our stay. The room we were in was clean, comfortable and adequate for our stay. The only niggle that we had, was the lack of drawer space, but this was no big thing. The type of bed is a personal thing, and unfortunately, we did not find ours comfortable - others, probably will. Overall, a very enjoyable weekend was had and we have no hesitation in recommending the Craven Heifer to others.

We had a great stay for a weekend and found the welcome was warm and friendly. Our room, which was away from the main bar/restaurant was clean, warm and had all we need inside. The evening meals were excellent, with a good choice on both the menu and the specials board. Breakfast was Continental which suited us, and we certainly had plenty to choose from. We would certainly recommend this friendly Inn and will no doubt return.

*BE WARNED* this is a terrible place to stay - in the morning a member of staff physically threatened a member of our party with a broom. I was stunned. The manager working that day gave a meek apology but nothing more. I'm sure there are lots of nice places to stay in or near Skipton. Look else where.

This man is absurd.

He complained after a night of very heavy rain there was a large puddle of water. I went to clear it with a broom. He then proceeded to stand in front of the broom in my way until I personally apologised for the puddle. For the avoidance of doubt I unreservedly apologise for the rain in Skipton, the rest of the Dales and the Lake District.

We live in a world of political correctness. However we own and manage a very busy pub and my name is over the door. I don't allow anybody to belittle me or any of my staff. He was condascending and yes the broom would have been inserted!

This is a nice hotel and friendly. The room was adequate and clean and tidy. Being situated away from the main hotel/bar area was unfortunate as it was blowing a gale and raining torrents when we were there. It certainly didn't put us off a most fabulous meal. Top marks for a great menu and much applause for the chef and kitchen staff.

I have recently stayed at the Craven Heifer Inn in Skipton as myself and my family were attending a bereavement service nearby and we had arrived from all parts of the Country and found this Inn to be central to our needs.

We were checked in by a most friendly and efficient host who was also sympathetic to our situation. We found our room spacious and very clean with an excellent view over the woodland area and beyond.

After our arrival we were more than ready for food and we asked for a table which was available and straight away and we ordered our food which was Haddock and twice fried chips with peas and my husband had the steak pie. The fish was the best I have ever tasted and the batter was superb. My husband's pie was full of soft juicy steak with a homemade flaky pastry top. He had chips with beautiful fresh vegetables and a jug of gravy. We were more than happy with the meal and settled down for the evening in the bar for a few drinks with family members. The atmosphere at the Inn was comfortable and welcoming and the staff were lovely hard working people.

The following morning we were greeted with a smile and a hearty continental breakfast which was in with the price of the room. We had fresh fruit which included pineapple and melon, an assortment of cereals, toast, croissants, jams and preserves, different types of cheeses and as much tea and coffee as we wanted. It was probably the best continental breakfast I have had over the last few years.

All in all this Inn is well worth a visit, it is homely, has an interesting background which can be looked up on the net regarding the Craven Heifer beast and there are many interesting artefacts to observe in the Inn itself. I would have no hesitation in booking this Inn again should I visit Skipton in the future. It was simply brilliant.

Our room was spacious and clean. Plenty of hot water and towels but lacking in somewhere to put our toiletries by the sink or shower. The hotel is right beside a main road, so road noise is a problem. Food - there was a good choice for the continental breakfast . Evening meals were very nice but limited choice for vegetarians. Beer good.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the road if bothered by road traffic noise.
