Low standard pub grub - tasteless cheese, potato and leek pie, peas like bullets, frozen chips, overlooked fish and incinerated mushy peas. Quick service and friendly staff.

Excellently placed venue at the top of the high street. We had lunch here on a market day, it was quiet and the bottom half was closed off, so restricted to the main bar area and seating..The whole environment feels a little tacky, from the carpets to the tables and condiment holder. Really feels like a good refurb or cleaning would be a bonus. Huge venue with lots of nooks and crannies when the whole area is open, boasting a wonderful big open fireplace with easy chairs....and plenty of space to accommodate any big party of visitors. No access to the decked area over looking the canal at the back. Apparently there is room upstairs for functions/weddings that can cater for 200 people. We eventually ordered drinks and meals dispite the computerised till having closed down.....
Anyway we ordered burgers as this was the superb meal deal of the day it also included a chosen drink.. They do different ''meal deals'' on week days...Staff were friendly and efficient. Food was '' typical pub food''....but a good variety if you choose from the menu.. I appreciate this venue is used by a variety of folks, from shoppers, walkers, traders, visitors etc, but I do think it could offer a much more updated environment.

We visited this pub on Sunday 24 November. Having spent a day walking in The Dales, we were attracted by the cosy looking fire. We made our choice from the menu and my husband tried to place an order at the bar. After waiting 10 minutes for someone to come to the bar, he eventually found the bar maid chatting in the kitchen. She reluctantly took our order but from a selection of six beers there was only one still available and that just about ran out as the glass was filled. From then on the service was decidely surly. Food OK.
What a shame, this pub has lots of character and with better management and staff training could be a great pub. Unfortunately it is in danger of going out of business as there are plenty of other much better establishments in the area.

A chain pub with a down market, impersonal, corporately designed offering.

What a pity - this pub has a great history, location and square footage (it goes back a long way - all the way to a verandah overlooking the canal actually) but the sticky carpet, minimum staff levels ambience shouts "lowest common denominator". The verandah is, predictably, a magnet for smokers.

I visited early on a Saturday evening after walking in the nearby dales. Service at the bar was hard work - I got the distinct impression of a staff ground down and going through the motions - everything is done via a computer screen that they tap with their ID card and eye contact is at a premium.

The food was OK of it's type and price point (the ping of the microwave was in evidence once one has selected from the unchanging, laminated menu) but don't expect too much - it's low end pub grub. The tables weren't clean and, despite the early hour and lack of clientele no-one bothered to wave a damp cloth about. Minimum wage environment?

In the hands of a more ambitious owner this pub could easily be a multi-level offering (local for the locals, pub food and better). Under the current regime the place reeks of wringing out the assets for a short term profit. It would not surprise me one jot if The Black Horse in Skipton changes hands in the next 12-18 months.

The only good thing about this pub is the friendly staff !! No roast beef Sunday lunch available at 1pm on a Sunday, not good, the food we ordered took about half an hour to arrive which was quite quick compared to other reviews left on here but it wasn't very well presented although despite this it was actually quite nice !! the owners need to do some market research, this pub is huge yet on a busy Sunday afternoon is a popular market town it was virtually empty.

A final note, the toilets were disgusting....just dirty and clearly not getting regular checks.
