We stopped here for a drink and light lunch on a weekday. It is a huge pub that stretches back a long way from the main street to the canal at the rear.

There was a good selection of real ales available. We sat outside and overlooked the canal which was nice. A good spot to sit out.

There are 2 large bars in the pub which was almost empty when we visited, although there were 4 or 5 couples sat out at the back. And strangely you can only get real ales from the top bar.

The beer and wine were excellent and the food was very good too. My partner had a chicken and bacon salad which was very nice, if a little on the large side. The cheese and onion panini that I had was nice too.

The tables outside were grubby and we had to ask for ours to be cleaned before we ate. And when I went back to the bar later for a drink there was no one in attendance on either bar. After a 5 minute wait we gave up and left.

I would return here again. The pub does have more potential and with a little more care and attention given to service, I think the drinkers/diners experience would be improved.

Second evening in Skipton and the Black Horse was a big mistake. The food was dry, lacked taste, boring and even the frozen peas were difficult to eat! We both left three quarters of the meal. Tables were less than clean. Bar staff and waitress were friendly, but that's about all there is to say positively about the place.

stopped off at Skipton on way home for a meal, after a day out & looked for a place to eat. We picked the Black Horse upon entering the first impressions were very nice olde worlde, & quiet that even included the background music, the menu had a good selection, the staff were polite, helpful & courteous. That is where the positives ended, even though it was fairly quiet we had to wait approx. 30 mins for our food, when it arrived the wife's scampi was more black than brown, the lemon with the scampi was hiding under a chip, the chips on both meals were of the frozen type & not very tasty. we decided not to risk a desert but did have a coffee which was that strong you could have stood the spoon up in it. We will not return for food again.

We went twice in July for lunch. The good point is that the food is actually ok and very cheap. The bad news varied, though it could all be put straight if they wanted to and they didn't just set out to fleece the customers. There was a poor service because of lack of staff and this was reflected in the mess left after previous customers and at the bar. The area outside, instead of being a joy, overlooking the canal, was a mixture of abandoned tables/ rotting tables, glass on the floor, an overgrown bank just over the tables and an air of neglect. Even in the sunshine, it looked grim. Why? Presumably they are tenants and don't care? The pub is crying out for decent management. Congrats to the young barman who tried to project a little class into the situation.

Lunch at the Black Horse was a big mistake. The scampi was overcooked or had been keeping warm for some time, it was served with a minuscule portion of dried up chips, the peas looked as if they had been keeping warm under a heat lamp along with a dried up piece of lemon. My grandson ordered sausage and mash, the sausage was dried up, the mash disgusting. We were a party of 7, not one of us will visit this place again.
