Had a wonderful experience at Hemingways - from the friendly staff through to the food. Fully recommend this as a place for a bite to eat! The new flora teas are amazing and delicious too!

We arrived rather late for afternoon tea and both of us had, tuna and cucumber mayo sandwiches, a pot of tea and a Knickerbocca Glory.
The sandwiches were not of the, wafer thin afternoon tea, variety that we had expected. The bread was thick and bulging with a very nice tuna mixture and served on a plate of salad. We were given knives and forks to attack the food.
The ice cream took us back to our childhood. It was exactly like the 50s vintage concoction and of generous proportions. I never cease to be amazed by the size of portions in some of Skipton's establishments. It is as though they anticipate that one has hiked for miles to arrive starving at the door.
We sat outside and nearly didn't order because we were expecting someone to come out and take the order and so paying upfront was a bit of a suprise. But as the outdoor tables occupy almost all of the gallery I can understand that it must be all too easy for someone to eat and scarper without paying.
The ambience is lovely in the Arcade particularly on a fine sunny afternoon. The wrought ironwork is very elegant. Perhaps the cafe could refine their healthy sandwiches to an afternoon tea dimension by using thinner bread? But the Knickerbocca Glory must remain in its present form for those of us who like to re-live our youth.

We went here for lunch and sat on the balcony overlooking the inside of Craven Court. I guess we should have been alerted by the fact that you had to pay up front and go inside to order the food.
When the waitress brought the cups, my partners cup was clearly unwashed and was stained with previous cup contents. She asked for this to be changed.
We both ordered the hot turkey and stuffing baguette with salad. When it arrived, we noticed that the cucumber was on the turn and going brown. The sugar in the bowl on the table was solid, so we asked for sweeteners. The young lad brought a sweetener dispenser and placed it on the table. You could see immediately, without even picking it up that the outside of it was absolutely filthy. We didn't want to make a fuss, so continued to eat our meal.
Before we left we took one of the plates and the sweetener dispenser inside, to speak to the owner.
My partner was calm and to the point and the owner immediately went on the defensive as if we were having a go at him. He obviously has a knack of trying to turn the tables on the customer as if it's their fault. His words, "oh please can't you see that we're busy!" The chef was passing and the owner collared him. The chef's explanation of brown cucumber was laughable, "it looks as though it's been overchilled!". The owner did toss the sweeteners in the bin and agreed that it shouldn't have been used, not before I'd taken a photo of it though! However there was no apology and no offer of a refund.
There are many better establishments in Skipton that don't serve brown cucumber or indeed dirty cups and sweetener dispensers. If that;s what you see, then what's it like behind the scenes??
Very unprofessional and atrocious customer service!!
We will not be going back!!

With so many cafes, pubs and restaurants in Skipton, I always sort of forget about Hemingway's as it's out of the way in Craven Court. However, I popped in for my lunch whilst out shopping last month and wasn't disappointed.

They had a nice tea selection and there was something on the menu for everyone. I opted for a ham sandwich and there was plenty of thick sliced meat in there.

The service was warm and efficient, although you do have to pop up to a payment counter on departure which I can imagine gets a substantial queue in peak Summer.

Hemingway's seems popular with the older end of the market, which perhaps explains why it only has 2 reviews, but don't let that deter from a homely, tasty and reasonably priced experience.
