Just got back from a stay at Herriots. Stayed with 2 girlfriends for a college reunion and it was fabulous. The rooms were spacious, comfortable and clean. Added bonuses of a hairdryer and iron and ironing board. The staff could not have been more helpful. We had dinner in the restaurant which was beautiful, I had the chicken liver parfait to start which was rich and creamy, followed by the slow roasted lamb which the chef happily tweaked for me as I am not a puy lentil fan. Breakfast was equally good, I had the Eggs Benedict, gorgeous!!! Staff in the restaurant were attentative without being obtrusive. I can definitely recommend this privately owned hotel for a relaxing and perfect stay.

We had been invited to attend an evening wedding reception at the Craven Arms Cruck Barn in Appletreewick (a fab venue!) and decided to stop at the Herriots Hotel over night, rather than travel back home to Shipley after the do.
Arrived at Herriots late afternoon, and received a warm welcome from Janice, the receptionist, who was very helpful and accommodating in providing us with all the info we needed in regards to our overnight stay, including info on local taxis to accommodate are journey to Appletreewick.
Our room (24) was exceedingly comfortable, very well equipped,(inc free wifi), a good size and had a window view which overlooked the canal.
Before we ventured onto the evening wedding reception we had a couple of drinks in the Herriots bar, and a meal in the Herriots Rhubarb Restaurant, which was excellent!
On our very late return from Appletreewick we flopped into our Queen size bed, and very kindly awoken in the morning by some rather vocal ducks that happened to be swimming past our window! Therefore managed to get up in time to enjoy a very hearty Yorkshire breakfast!
All in all our experience of Herriots (stayed a couple of times here now) is that this hotel is an excellent all rounder in regards to value, service, food and atmosphere.

This is a stylish hotel, in a good location, opposite Skipton station & only 5 minutes walk into the town centre. Facilities in the rooms are good but not as outstanding as the prices & other reviews suggest. The restaurant has lovely décor, friendly staff and very good food, at sensible prices. The breakfasts were everything you expect of a Yorkshire breakfast & more - excellent in quantity & quality.
Now the but:
We'd chosen this hotel for a de-stressing break, paying above average for a canal-side room in a hotel that claimed to be excellent for relaxing stays. We arrived to find that there were wedding functions on both nights. We'd been moved to a room that wasn't right above the function. It was decorated stylishly, as promised, and the bathroom was large and modern, but the canal view & balcony we'd paid extra for had gone - as had the lovely public lounge area, now occupied for the weddings. The private parking which was another important element in our choice of hotel was full to overflowing. On the first night we parked on-street, but on the second we had to go to a public car park 5 minutes walk away and pay for overnight parking. Our room still overlooked the courtyard & party rooms, & the music went on until very late, both nights. On the second night, the restaurant was booked for a party & we had to walk into town (in the rain!) to get food elsewhere - a bitter disappointment after a nice meal the night before.
After much persuasion, the owner agreed to reduce the price for us, such that we in effect had free dinner one night. However, we did feel we should have been warned of the event on booking & would strongly recommend you check there's nothing on during your stay, by calling them direct, rather than using their website.

My fiancé and I attended our friends' Wedding reception here. It was our first visit to the hotel.

On arrival it wasn't clear where the reception was being held but we figured it out eventually - it's to the left of the main bar as you walk through the front entrance. As you go through there's a seating area with tables set out for the food and then as you continue there's the main room with a bar at the back. The decor of the hotel is modern and fresh. The main room looked lovely set up with the wedding breakfast tables. The seating area could have a better layout - in a corner of this area (as you walk in) there's a reception desk for the hotel guests to check-in. We found as Wedding guests using the main bar (see below) that as we stood in this area (because it was close to the main bar) we had nowhere to put our drinks as putting them on the large surface of the reception desk area was forbidden - luckily the hotel have a battleaxe staff member on hand to tell you this! She was very abrupt with us about this and generally came off miserable the whole evening. Might I suggest relocating the reception desk, changing the function so it can be used for guests' drinks or putting more staff on in the reception area bar so that guests don't have to use the main one.

Unfortunately the bar in the main room was not very well staffed and this meant the guests had to visit the main bar. Initially this wasn't a huge problem as the hotel was not too busy but as the night progressed and got busier we ended up waiting for 20 minutes + to get a drink each round. On our first visit to the main bar we were excited to buy cocktails which were half price (happy hour), the selection wasn't great but they had a classic Bellini which I was really happy to order. Unfortunately this is as far as my happiness went because after fannying around for 10 minutes I was told by the bartender that they had no peach puree so couldn't do me a Bellini. I'd initially wanted a strawberry daiquiri anyway so as the bartender went to make the Bellini I'd enquired if they did daiquiris (lots of places do even if they're not always on the menu) for my next round - he heard me as he reacted but he didn't respond. His English wasn't very good or he wasn't the best bartender (or both!) as he checked multiple times what a daiquiri was - and then failed to respond with an answer. In the end we found out from a lady behind the bar that they don't do daiquiris. The drinks are very expensive - £6 for a Malibu and coke!!!

The food was BBQ'd - there were chicken breasts, beef burgers, sausages and I think there was another meat. There was a good salad selection too, I particularly enjoyed the tomatoes marinated with garlic and onion. I was surprised to see the buffet cleared away by staff later on despite there being lots of food leftover. I considered the fact it may have been for food hygiene reasons (as the meat was left out) but it had been out a couple of hours before it was cleared anyway so not sure as to the reason for this.

In summary this is not a bad wedding venue and the problems are minor points which could easily be rectified but having said that small things make a big difference and staff attitude in particular is something which should be on point; if it isn't can put a dampener on your evening.

Stayed for a friends wedding. Would be nice to have a complementary early check in as part of the wedding party, but was ok not to. Comfortable bed, spacious room and very clean.
Had a cocktail each in the evening, what a mistake. The French 75 was nearly £9 and undrinkable, the Cosmopolitan wasn't a Cosmo in any way, no martini glass and sickly sweet like an Oasis drink, some cocktail training needs to take place.
The breakfast was ok.
Some set prices for rooms would be good. Everybody got charged different prices for the same rooms and one couple got a nicer room for a lot less.

We stayed here for a friend's wedding, and couldn't find much to fault with the place. The staff were friendly and helpful, even going so far as to ring us to notify us that a wedding was taking place and there may be some noise, and the rooms clean and comfortable. Very nice setting (1st and 2nd floor rooms overlook the canal at the rear), and a very decent breakfast. Would definitely recommend. The only minor complaints I had were a duff thermostatic shower valve (room 24, bit lazy not to have replaced it, but not important) and a website that lacks much of the information you need (check-in / out times, room facilities etc.)

Room Tip: 1st/2nd floor rooms overlook the canal

I'd been staying in Premier inns all week and my last stay was at Herriot's. Lovely room, beautifully decorated, clean and comfortable. Free WI FI was ideal for me as a business traveller along with a comfy desk to sit at. Was welcomed at reception with a little pack of hand wrapped shortbread biscuits to go with my Yorkshire tea.

Room Tip: I stayed on 1st floor. Think shower had been newly fitted
