The location is everything - and on a nice day the views are brilliant.

Not a lot of the castle left to explore - as it was slighted.

Make sure you bring a torch to explore the cave.

Best times to visit are on clear sunny days - ore on a cold clear and snowy/frosty morning.

As you approach this castle you can see it perched on the hill and it looks so impressive. The walk up the hill is a little steep so not very suitable for anyone who a physical disability, but well worth the effort. The castle offers fantastic views and it is shrouded with history. The moat is still in situ on one side of the castle. A great place to take a picnic and spend some time. Well worth a visit if in the region.

It's the site that is most special rather than the building itself.

I love the fact that it was built in an area where it happily subjugated about 10 people and thousands of sheep!

It perches on top of a rocky hill and though it only takes 30 minutes to look around, also has a nice walk down to the river and back up to the cafe and shop.

We went there some time ago with our kids and sledged down the hill next to the castle. It was a perfect day, deep snow, some drifts, bright sunshine, a thermos of cocoa and sarnies. Memories are made of this...

Bit pricey to park but dont charge entry i feel maybe they should it would come across a lot better than feel your being overcharged for parking, apart from this no complaint....
