This is a review of afternoon tea, not a hotel stay.

Presentation was not as pleasing as expected (having experienced afternoon tea at several hotels). It was no better than an ordinary coffee/tea shop/café. Tea composed of a choice of a round of sandwiches, a choice of one cake, one scone jam and cream and one welsh cake. One pot of tea (or coffee) for £9.95
The sandwich was delicious. Not in the style of ‘afternoon tea’ as it was one large sandwich. Positive mark because it was one of the best components and could not be faulted.
Welsh cake was buttery and tasty.
Uninspiring crockery with teapots that allowed tea to go cold quickly.
Cakes presented on one large round dish (for three persons). This may sound a bit picky but we did expect better presentation.
Coffee and walnut cake inedible. It was a defrosted mass produced gateaux type cake which was tasteless and watery.
Fruit scones – whilst the taste was ok literally had one sultana in two and none in the third.
We asked for more tea because it got cold so quickly and were horrified to be charged £4 for extra tea for two (as only one is allowed per afternoon tea). Most expensive teabags in Wales I guess at £2 each.
We were disappointed as this was a ‘treat’. Given the place’s reputation, we expected better. Not a place I would return to for afternoon tea. There are much better places at same price.

Great staff here! Delicious white rioja! The main dishes seemed different from usual, which was v much needed here. We had the lamb , pork, and the fish . All cooked 3 ways! My fish was really delicious, love all the food on
One plate. Pet hate of mine is boring boiled veg! It came with pretty sauce spinach and samphire, exc combination! Fautless dish v much to my taste! Lovely creamy garlic potatoes. Not sure bout slate plate, looks great but seemed quite awkward to handle 4 lovely waitress! Nice breads. Shame bout same old same old puds! Enjoyable evening. Seemed more expensive than usual?

Interesting history to this place which makes you appreciate it all the more. It's a great little town anyway, lovely walks, shopping and atmosphere. We had Sunday lunch with a glass of chardonnay and were very satisfied with our starters (smoked duck salad, and crab/crayfish cake) and mains (traditional roast beef & Yorkshire pud). They were getting ready for a wedding in the afternoon so we had a peak and it looked very nice. Smart but relaxed, I would like to go back and next time have dinner & stay the night.

Treated friends to a midweek lunch and by going to such a quality hotel we had a splendid time. The atmosphere was lovely and the seating was perfect. The food was top rate and no one bothered us to leave early. We will most certainly return.
