This is a review of afternoon tea, not a hotel stay.
Presentation was not as pleasing as expected (having experienced afternoon tea at several hotels). It was no better than an ordinary coffee/tea shop/café. Tea composed of a choice of a round of sandwiches, a choice of one cake, one scone jam and cream and one welsh cake. One pot of tea (or coffee) for £9.95
The sandwich was delicious. Not in the style of ‘afternoon tea’ as it was one large sandwich. Positive mark because it was one of the best components and could not be faulted.
Welsh cake was buttery and tasty.
Uninspiring crockery with teapots that allowed tea to go cold quickly.
Cakes presented on one large round dish (for three persons). This may sound a bit picky but we did expect better presentation.
Coffee and walnut cake inedible. It was a defrosted mass produced gateaux type cake which was tasteless and watery.
Fruit scones – whilst the taste was ok literally had one sultana in two and none in the third.
We asked for more tea because it got cold so quickly and were horrified to be charged £4 for extra tea for two (as only one is allowed per afternoon tea). Most expensive teabags in Wales I guess at £2 each.
We were disappointed as this was a ‘treat’. Given the place’s reputation, we expected better. Not a place I would return to for afternoon tea. There are much better places at same price.
