“Ideal place to stay in the centre of Carmarthen”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2014

This is our second stay at the Spilman - 3 years ago when we 'delivered' our daughter to Trinity St Davids Uni, and this week to attend her graduation!

The hotel is ideally situated for the centre of Carmarthen, you are literally in the middle of the town! The rooms we have stayed in on both visits were perfect (we stayed in the 'annexe' on both occasions); the breakfast was plentiful and freshly cooked to order. All staff that we came into contact with were very pleasant, polite and helpful.

If you are looking for accommodation in Carmarthen, you cannot go wrong booking the Spilman.

This hotel is in a great location in the centre of town, very close to restaurants and a good Wetherspoons pub, yet because it is tucked away from the street it is very quiet. Room is spotless with comfortable beds and staff are friendly. We stayed in a room at the top of the hotel overlooking the car park at the rear. All in all, highly recommended,

Room Tip: Room overlooking the car park was very quiet.

I stayed in this hotel with my husband for two nights on 28th June as we were going to a special event at the National Garden of Wales. This hotel was in the ideal position for going to the garden as it is only a few minutes drive from there.

We had room no.2 which is very large. It has a fridge, an iron and ironing board and a hairdryer. The bedroom was very clean and the bed was the most comfortable hotel bed we've had for a long time. When we first entered the room, though, there was strange smell which I think may have been carpet shampoo.

The bathroom was also very large and quite clean. At first glance it appeared to be perfectly clean but at closer inspection I noticed some black mould. Also despite the bathroom being large there was very little room to put things down.

The lighting in both the bedroom and the bathroom was very good but in the bathroom it was the wrong colour signature for the accurate application of make up.

The main things that were wrong with the room is that neither the bedroom door or the bathroom door fitted the gaps they were in. This resulted in us being able to hear people talking outside our bedroom but worse still we could hear what the other one of us was doing in the bathroom. Also when you were in the bathroom you could hear the contents of the toilet in the bathroom above emptying. I found that just horrible.

As you would expect, there were tea and coffee provided but the coffee was Nescafe and was very bitter. We didn't try the tea as we always take our own tea bags so we just stuck to those.

We had a drink in the small bar area one night and the prices were very good. As we were the only ones in the bar at that time we were given the remote for the TV so that we could watch what we liked. For some reason there was a bowl containing shrivelled up plums on the coffee table.

The dining room where we were served breakfast was very clean. The breakfast wasn't very good though. The coffee was poor quality but it was better than that in the room. The toast was awful as was most of the cooked breakfast. The bacon was salty, the mushrooms tasted so bad that I couldn't finish them and the baked beans were almost cold. The sausage and the egg were fine. There was a reasonable selection of cold foods but some of the fresh fruit looked past their best. On the second morning my husband went down for breakfast but I didn't bother. I stayed in bed longer instead and had fruit, yogurt and biscuits that I'd bought from the Co-op which is conveniently located opposite the entrance to the hotel car park.

Talking about the car park, it hasn't got very many spaces and the entrance to it is very narrow. It was also quite difficult to find when we first arrived in Carmarthen.

Despite all my criticisms I would recommend the hotel and would stay there again but I'd ask for a room other than room no.2.

Room Tip: If offered room no.2 ask if there's another room available.

We stayed at the Spilman for two nights recently and will certainly stay there again. There appears to have been wide scale refurbishment and the rooms are very clean with comfortable beds. Our room had a super shower (but no Bath) nice flat screen tele and small fridge.
The price includes a first class breakfast but evening meals are not available. This is not a problem because there are plenty of good eating places within a short walking distance.
Take great care when you are entering the car park (which is at the rear of the Hotel in King Street). It is a very tight squeeze and needs a wide swing to enter, otherwise you will join the many other drivers that have left their paintwork on the wall and metal corner protection.

We stayed here in a family group and had a really nice stay. We stayed in room 15, very nice decor and clean. We were staying with our baby and the curtains were nice and dark. Lovely bathroom and shower. The breakfast was very tasty and all the staff were very pleasant. The entrance into the car park is indeed tight but just take it easy and follow the instructions. Very nice stay.

Based on earlier Trip Advisor ratings my wife and I booked an overnight stay at the Spilman Hotel on Sunday 15 June 2014. It was OK.
Pluses were a good sized bedroom with newish furnishings all was clean and tidy.
Nice full monty breakfast included in the B&B price. Good economical room rate - good value actually.
Not so pluses: Very tight squeeze indeed to get onto the hotel's car park. The hotel is located on a main road through town so rooms at the front of hotel suffer from traffic noise - if it's warm and you need to leave the bedroom windows open in one of these rooms get ready for a sleepless night as a vehicle passes every few minutes right through the night.
All in all the Spilman Hotel was not bad but make sure you don't get a room at the front if you want any sleep.

Room Tip: Don't accept a room at the front of the hotel - lots of traffic noise.

Room lovely, good breakfast, service was excellent but first impression of this hotel is at Reception desk when checking in. Suggest Reception gentleman given some training of finds a better suited occupation. Disinterested, charmless and left my wife carry 2 suitcases up stairs while I had to try and find parking for which he had not been able to provide directions (first right and at bottom of hill).
We will use the Spilman again but woe betide this gentleman if he has managed to hold onto his job and treats us so badly again.
Gingers Indian restaurant at back of hotel is excellent...do try it
