Owner description: Take a step back in time at the Gwili Steam Railway, a delightful preserved railway just outside Carmarthen in West Wales. Running steam train services every day of local school holidays and selected days throughout the remainder of the year, this is the perfect trip for all ages to enjoy. Experience a typical country branch line from the 1950s with a stop off at Llwyfan Cerrig Station in a beautiful spot alongside the River Gwili.

Third time here and much the same overall but they are extending the line this year so hopefully next time will have slightly longer ride. That said the ride we did have was picturesque and comfortable and importantly dry given that it tipped down the whole time we were there! The staff were very friendly and helpful, holding the train so us latecomers could catch it. The Welsh vintage train displayed at their middle station is interesting and nice to see the TVR tank back together and cosmetically after years as a kit of parts being shuffled around between railways without the will to restore it. Also nice to see they keep their Mk 1s smart and clean with all carriages making up or train seemingly freshly painted. My only wish aside from a longer ride is that they would get a mainline engine of their own; a GWR pannier tank would be so picturesque here shuffling alongside the river. As I hinted earlier I expect to return at some point in the future.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review following your trip with us. Its really great that you enjoyed the trip with us. As its is a volunteer run attraction it is very pleasing to us all to receive positive feedback from visitors.

As you mentioned, the current run is a little on the short side however, we do try and fill your time with as much as possible. It is indeed a really pretty part of the countryside with the river one side of the track and fields on the other.

We have been working very hard on the extension. It has been delayed somewhat as work had to be carried out by a utility company on one of the bridges which meant the newly laid track had to be taken up again. However, we hope to have part of the extension opened later this summer with a view to having the formal opening early next year.

We hope to see you again soon and thanks again for the review.

Thanks for taking the time to leave such a fabulous rating following your visit to us. We really do appreciate feedback from our visitors, as a volunteer led attraction, positive feedback is such a morale boost.

We are in the process of completing the extension which will double the length of the trip. Hopefully the whole extension will be open formally early next year. We are very busy not only working on the extension but also getting ready for the Santa's Magical Steamings. All hands to the pump then as they are being run every weekend during December and every day in the week leading up to Christmas.

We hope to see you all again soon

The journey is rather short but there is work going on to extend the line so this will be improving. However, what it lacks in duration it makes up for in atmosphere and the unique opportunity to experience a piece of history. However, once you have bought your ticket you can ride the train back and forth, alighting at any of the stops, all day long. If the weather is fine you could spend a nice afternoon there with a picnic and a book and you can also spend some time in the interesting gift shop and café. The staff are friendly, helpful and very happy to talk about the line, its history and the ongoing work on the lines expansion. The carriages, platforms, waiting room, ticket offices and staff uniforms and outfits are kept as authentic as possible. There are some nice views along the route and there will be more of those as the line expands. This is a gentle, relaxing and interesting place to visit with a romantic feel and worth a visit. And remember, this is all run by volunteers and enthusiasts. However, it is not a theme park and there are no white knuckle rides or cheap thrills so if that is what you are after, this is not the place for you.

Thanks for leaving such a great review on Trip Advisor and we are so pleased that you had a good visit.

As you say, it is a volunteer led attraction and we all work hard to make the visitors feel welcome and make the visit as enjoyable as possible.

We are working really hard on the extension and hope to have it part open later this summer. Its not been an easy project by any means but we are all looking forward to increasing the length of the ride on the train. We now have 2 fully working steam engines and are in the process of rebuilding Olwen, another small steam engine.

We have been running Cream Tea Specials on a Thursday, each week during the summer and are also beginning the preparations for Santa's Magical Steamings, so as you can no doubt see, it has been a very busy time for the volunteers.

Thanks again for leaving the review and we all hope to see you here again soon.

Took a trip on The Gwilli which I feel has managed to recreate a steam railway atmosphere, without ignoring the tourists.
I liked the fact that each round trip includes a stop at the halfway station, so kids can also ride the miniature railway and you can visit the Travelling Post Office Sorting van.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review on Trip Advisor. I am sorry for the delay in responding but we have only just found out how to do this.

I am so glad that you enjoyed your visit and felt that we managed to create the right atmosphere. The volunteers work very hard and great reviews are a very welcome boost in morale.

We are only a small attraction and it is difficult to please everyone, all the time. Once the extension is open the length of the train ride will double, but you will still be able to visit the signal box and Museum in Bronwydd Arms and the Travelling Post Office and miniature railways at Llwyfan Cerrig.

Hope to see you again soon.

Thanks for leaving a review on Trip Advisor. We have only just found out how to leave a reply so please accept my apologies for the delay.

Thank you for the excellent rating you gave us. As a volunteer led attraction, it is great when we get a good review, as it makes all the hard work, worth while.

A lot of our younger visitors love seeing the steam trains and often think its the Hogworts Express, especially the Welsh Guardsman. Its lovely to see that so many youngsters are enjoying steam trains.

We hope to see you all again soon
