Appalling place really. Stayed here for a wedding in October, and it was really really bad. I was by myself and asked for a double. They downgraded me to a single without asking, then had no doubles for me to go to. The bed was a camp bed, with one of the four legs shorter than the others which led to an unusal sleep. The room was tired, and obviously hadn't been touched for decades. Breakfast was okay though.
But it was soooo expensive for the price. I've recently stayed at a 4* in Oxford Street in London for our Christmas for less money. I'd recommend you stay anywhere else at all rather than this place, but there's nowhere else in Carmathen to go. If I was going again I think I'd prefer to sleep in the gutter rather than here again.

Unless it has improved dramatically in the last two years it is in a dreadful state and badly in need of a refurb. when I queried the state of the place at reception, I was told that the owners had it up for sale and there were no plans to refurbish at the time. I suggested that with that in mind they might reduce the prices to reflect the standard because it's not cheap- having said that- in the state it was in at the time any price would have been too much. it's a great shame as I remember the hotel being a place to be reckoned with many years ago but I'm afraid now its just resting on its very old laurels.

I stayed here for 3 days in July 2003 . The hotel does not appear to have been decorated since the 1960s, it is in serious need of redecoration.

A few redeeming features - the breakfasts were good and the staff helpful. The bar has lots of seating and attracts a friednly local crowd as well as hotel guests.

, Owner at The Ivy Bush Royal Hotel, responded to this review, 13 October 2003
As the new owner of the Ivy Bush Royal Hotel, I totally agree that the Hotel is in urgent need of refurbishment. Since purchasing the Hotel in March 2003 we have spent 6 months putting the plans together to completely update the public rooms and all 73 bedrooms, along with external improvements. The Hotel has suffered from a complete lack of investment from succesive corporate owners, thankfully it is now back under the ownership of private local owners. The refurbishment programme will take place over the winter and should be completed by Easter 2004, with a high 3* being the target grading.
