Avondale Bed & Breakfast
Ranked #2 of 5 Cookstown B&B and Inns
Reviewed 25 July 2011

Avondale is a very clean and welcoming B&B, Ailsa and Tom did everything that they could to make us welcome and to ensure that we had a very enjoyable stay.
Ailsa is a fantastic cook and Tom a very skilled musician, who makes his own fiddles and wonderful music.
Do take time to choose some of Ailsa`s craft work for holiday souveners of Ireland, they are equisite!
Ailsa and Tom are well known in the area and everyone says the same `What a wonderfully talented couple they are!`
Thank you so very much for all your help in tracing my husband`s ancestors, it was fantastic to find the records of his family, we want to contine that search and to return to Avondale asap.

Room Tip: Just ask Alisa, she`ll guide you.

We stayed here for a few days with some friends for the Cookstown 100 motorcycle road races.
The welcome is warm, the accommodation comfortable and cleaner than many operating theatres.
Ailsa and Tom make all their guests so very welcome, the breakfast will last you well into the afternoon and it is lovely to use nice crystal at breakfast!
Ailsa is a bit of a dab hand with all things crafty and has many beautifully made items available for sale, so you don't need to trawl the shops for gifts to bring home.
The Avondale is out of town, but only 5 minutes and a fiver in a taxi. Because of the rural location, it is quiet and dark, which helps a good nights sleep.

We stayed at the Avondale B&B at the end of April for 5 nights to attend the Cookstown 100 motorcycle road races. The owners, Ailsa and Tom were incredibly nice and couldn't do enough for you. They really went out of their way for us and even provided parking space for our motorcycle safely at the rear of the house. The location was convenient for us, set in a quiet area. The room was spotless and the en-suite was excellent. The furnishings were all beautifully matched. I was pleasantly surprised to find the room serviced every day with the tea/coffee replenished.
The breakfast was delicious and plentiful with a choice of fruits and cereals after which a full cooked breakfast was served. Plenty enough to last for most of the day.
There is plenty of information about the local area in the room and this is backed up by Tom and Ailsa’s recommendations even down to the taxis which were very reliable and the fares very reasonable.
A quiet and comfortable stay, exactly what you want when you stay away and you are guaranteed a friendly welcome by Ailsa and Tom.

Room Tip: Stay for more than a couple of nights

Hosts gave good tips on visiting local historical sites, especially the important Tullyhogue Ring Fort, the inauguration site of the O'Neill clan kings.

As someone who was born near here and whose antecedents are buried in the local church, this weeeknd trip to Tyrone was to try and re-establish not only my roots but also the things that contributed to my memories of childhood holidays with grandparents.
Returning this time, I found in Ailsa and Tom those half remembered images of my past that I have not seen or felt too often in the last 50 years.
If you want to try and get a real feel of Ulster and Tyrone in particular, then you won't go far wrong staying here. The demeanour of the hosts that was so obviously normal to them, was to my wife and I, quite exceptional compared to the many, many B&B's in which we have stayed over the years; the accommodation and breakfasts were as we had hoped, but these owners go the extra mile for you to make sure you are happy.
Tom is an exceptional fiddler and we were fortunate to arrive on a day when he was going to play that evening, so we were invited! We drove with Ailsa as a passenger so that we would not get lost in the myriad of small lanes surrounding Lough Neagh. It's dark here at night - no street lighting - and sneaky speed bumps to wreck the exhaust. However any concern that we had that we were complete strangers without a bottle of wine or any present for the host, were quickly dispelled as chairs were produced, drinks inserted into hands and plates filled with food and the whole Tyrone experience continued into the small hours, though we did leave before midnight pleading fatigue after a very early start.
Ailsa, like Tom is very skilful with her hands, and not just with food preparation, but you'll have to visit yourselves to find out what I mean.

We stayed at the Avondale B&B at the end of July for a friends wedding in Cookstown. I cannot say enough nice things about our stay.

The owners were incredibly nice and couldn't do enough for you. They really went out of their way for us, Tom even drove us into town one day when we didnt have our car!

The B&B was very quanit, lovely big rooms and the surroundings were so peaceful, all we could hear were the cows in the next door field mooing!
Breakfast was delicious and the whole place had a great atmosphere.
Next time we visit NI we wouldnt dream of staying anywhere else.
