This isn't a cheap hotel and we weren't impressed by what was on offer for the price. Apart from a (machine produced) greeting card from the manager the personal touches that make a great hotel were largely missing. Our double room was spacious and comfortable but looked out onto an asphalted car park and the side of a housing estate. The place was heaving with extremely loud American men (dressed entirely by their absent wives and the Landsend catalogue) who had two subjects to discuss: golf and business. Since I'm with Mark Twain on the first subject and was on holiday from the second - and how interested can one get about the president's corporate rebranding proposals anyway? - I wasn't enthralled to have my dinner drowned out by the fortissimo braying and whoops from all the neighbouring tables (luckily they all eventually retreated to a small hut in the garden to smoke illegal Cuban cigars). You can't blame the hotel for the guests it gets, but everything there left a taste of slight vulgarity (OK call me a snob) from the over-restored building to the gloom of the restaurant (that wine list is ridiculously priced and arranged) to the pseudo-quaint, cramped snug areas in the bar to the corporately uniformed reception staff with their lines learned by rote (like Ryanair stewards) who would do anything for you except smile (big exception was our brilliant waitress - but then, she was a recent university graduate!). So sorry, Bushmills, but we won't be back any time soon.
