Stayed here for one night with a friend. We were going to a wedding nearby and needed an early check-in. The Port Hotel was able to let us into our room at 10am at no extra charge which was great. They were also able to get us a quote for a taxi to the church and book this for us. When we arrived in Portrush on the Saturday morning nothing was open. It was a virtual ghost town, seems like it's the kind of place that "comes alive" at night, We were starving and the hotel was able to offer us breakfast, which was very tasty both times.

Now the bad stuff. The hotel's decor was a bit tired looking but this was in keeping with most of Portrush to be honest! The room was very big and had everything you'd need including a comfortable double and single bed but it was very cold. The shower was having a thermostat issue and alternated between freezing and boiling! The room smelt of stale smoke. We don't think the hotel offered any non-smoking rooms, we certainly weren't asked if we'd have preferred one and there was a strong smell of smoke in the corridors. Also beware that at night the hotel becomes a lively bar and the night we were there was Karaoke night. It was quite noisy. thankfully we were on the second floor so it could have been worse.

Overall it was fine for what we needed, okay value for money but wouldn't be rushing back.

I had read reviews about this hotel and they were so mixed I didn't know what to expect but I thought we'd give it a go as we wouldn't be in the room for long - we were in Portrush for the Saturday night gigs of the first North Coast Folk Festival so we just needed a place to put our heads down and have breakfast before heading off again on Sunday. We booked two double rooms at £70 each and i thought ours was just okay but when I went into my sister and her husband's room it was terrible. The carpet had been 'hacked' rather than laid as it was all ragged and up the walls and because there must be some subsidence in the building the room actually sloped - and there were two identical faded prints on the walls, now WHY would you do that! The hallways are very 'old fashioned guest-housey' if you know what I mean with a table draped with a cloth on each landing topped with a vase with plastic flowers in each. We had a look into the public bar downstairs which looked welcoming with a real fire and we thought 'ah we'll have a nightcap in there before bed'. Boy were we wrong. We managed to see some great music at the festival - four gigs in all - and went back to chat about the music over a drink. When we got in a karaoke was in full swing but the bar was closed! We were told 'we can't serve you a drink without serving the others in there' I said 'but we're residents and they're not, can't one of the staff even bring a drink out to us' He said it didn't matter that we were residents and that it was management policy not his. To be fair he wasn't rude but we were very frustrated. I explained we had purposely booked a hotel rather than a B&B because we wanted to have bar/restaurant facilities. Eventually (after long discussions) he said if we waited in the foyer until the cleared the bar we could have a drink - this we did, had our drink and chat and went on up to our rooms. I did apologise to the young lad for making a fuss but stressed how unbelievable it was that that residents weren't allowed to be served. Perhaps if they fell through the door drunk and demanded more alcohol that should be the case as a couple did after we came in, but we just been out listening to music and were looking forward to a chat. He said he didn't blame me as he would be annoyed in our position but it was management policy...Needless to say there won't be a next time!
