“Wonderfull, peacefull place”
Reviewed 1 June 2011

We spent only one night at Downhill Hostel, but we really loved this place. Surroundings is beautiful - Mussenden Temple is a really must see. The cliffs, coast and beach are amazing. We had double room ensuite - it was very nice and clean. It's comfortable that you can use hostel's kitchen, dishes and pots at any time. Owners were unbelievably helpfull - they took us on a train, so we we did not have to take neither a bus nor a taxi. Very nice people :) I would definitely recommend

Just back from another fabulous break at Downhill Hostel. Our group included couples (young and old) and families with small children - excellent for everyone! The location is unbeatable, just walk under the bridge and you're on the beach. We were lucky enough to get a seaview room again, although we didn't spend much time in the room it was lovely to roll up the window blind in the morning and take in the view. Kitchen facilities great, made a full roast dinner on Easter Sunday and enjoyed eating it in the lovely bay window of the dining room. Enjoyed a couple of great nights chatting in front of the fire. A visit to Mussenden Temple is a must.

Room Tip: Get there early to get a seaview room!

It cost us 20 Euros p/p p/night. We stayed in a two bed private room, very clean and great views. The owners were very friendly and accommodating; great facilities for cooking and a local petrol station (with a Spar) is 5 mins drive away. It's about a 30 minute drive to the Bushmills distillery and a further 5 minutes to Giant's Causeway. Opposite the hostel entrance is a very steep road, we drove 10 minutes to the peak to a little parking place; really good view of the coastline there worth a drive if you have the time.

Just back from a very relaxing stay at Downhill. Went on recommendation but delighted by the value of the experience for £20 each! Beautiful building, very well maintained and it's clear the hosts pay great attention to detail. Could be used as a base to tour the area but it would be a shame not to stay put and enjoy the scenery (walk to beach or Mussenden temple), dinner in the elegant dining room ( my own curry was delicious)with the smell of fresh lillies and ceramic and glassware crafted by the host on display, the books and records in the comfortable living room. Didn't want to leave the attic room on the top floor with seaview and patchwork duvet cover either! So handy to Belfast I want to go back soon!

Beautiful location and VERY peaceful. Met lifetime friends! The hosts are great and encourage guests to talk to each other. Favorite part other than the new friends? All the artwork in the house was created by local artists. A nice touch.

We booked Thanksgiving night and William, being American originally and his wife had planned to have the hostel closed so that they could visit friends. William agreed to be there at 8 PM so that we could check in. We were 2 hours late but no problem. Then he used computer messaging and cell phones to alert our daughter, who was going to meet us there the next day, that she couldn't get through because bus service was suspended due to a a rock slide down the road. The ambiance is like an old Irish farmhouse and William welcomed us to help ourselves to any food in the kitchen that was left by previous guests ( this may or may not be a permanent policy, don't hold them to it. The point is they are very hospitable.). Straight out the front lawn is the beach, which offers stunning views of the cliffs that line the ocean. If you go, watch carefully for the sign out on the road. It's tiny, due to local sign size restrictions.
