I stayed in Downhill Hostel with my wife and 2 year old daughter in august and we all had the most amazing time!!
I have stayed in many hostels, mainly during my travels however this was the first time for my wife and obviously my daughter, so she had her reservations...
From the moment you drive up to downhill any concerns disappear, its a beautiful house, the hostel is spotless, rooms cleaner than some hotels ive been in, the location is out of this world (soo beautiful), the beach is clean and save with life guards and on your door step....if you surf the waves where decent as well....
Without a doubt the best hostel I had ever been too, friendly staff, safe environment, really is no suprise this is the no.1 hostel in northern ireland!!!!

I can not wait to head back soon with my family,

hope the reviews helps any one considering going, just do it you will not regret it!!

Room Tip: for families, double with private shower and toilet

This place is a gem!
The location, the house, the services available, the rooms, the beach, the attractions around... everything about this place is perfect.
This is a place you know you're going to love from the first time you see it. Actually, you know it from the website! And from the moment you set foot there, you feel as comfortable as if you were at home.
Being a small hostel, it's not packed with people who don't care to speak to each other. So it's quiet and "family-like". You'd almost wish the next day was rainy so you could sit in one of the comfy couchs by the window and read the day away with a nice cup of tea nearby.
Only negative point was the midges in the kitchen around the food on the shelves. There were getting quite annoying and don't give a really clean feel to the otherwise spotless kitchen. How about lending some boxes for the guests to put their food in?

Rarely do hostels have such a spectacular view, look so quaint, or been manged so efficiently. The railroad track out front is a distraction, but when you're wedged between a towering cliff and a wide sandy beach these rails are just an unfortunate dose of reality. And too, until free WiFi becomes the standard you'll have to pay for internet usage. Bedrooms are open and cheery, grounds are well maintained, kitchen is immaculate, everything everywhere is in its place. And those long dawn/dusk walks along a wide, flat, beach, while local horses are raced along the sand ... priceless.

Overall, I was disappointed with Downhill, though that may be the result of muddy expectations on my part. Like many other facilities, it's on-line photos are selected to present the operation at its best. Unfortunately, that sets Downhill up to disappoint guests when they arrive and find Downhill tucked into small bit of land accessible from a steep and highly curved coastal road, overlooked by what appears to be a massive vacation apartment development with many unsold properties. (Note: I booked through a service which used more favorable photos than are found on Downhill's site.)

The train tracks between the hostel and the beach are a minor problem, at best. Although upwards of 20 trains per day pass by, they are small, fast and silent. Actually beautiful, in a way.

Our room for two provided a comfortable enough bed, a minimum of space to hang some clothing, and an odd view of the water. The major drawback was the sloping ceiling which requires even a small man (5'8") to stoop far over to avoid whacking his head. I learned after two whacks.

I don't know whether the cost was competitive with other situations in the area, but it seems high in retrospect, compared to the quality of our other, non-hostel accommodations in the North.

One can wash and dry some laundry here, for 5 euros.

There is no internet access other than a pay as you go setup we were told was adequate for email. We did not use it.

The kitchen is well equipped and well stocked with spices and other things you might want to turn your food into a meal. We ate simply and cheaply, but were treated to the aroma of some interesting looking curries and other, relatively complicated dishes.

The owner is a pleasant fellow, who explained the operation well and politely. The summer staff, a young woman from the US, was very helpful, particularly when it came time for some laundry. (She likes Diet Coke, if you'd like to take a bribe or thank you along with you!)

It's a bit of a drive to the Causeway from here and I suggest you not take the coastal road. It's slow and takes you through major beach developments.

This place is unbelieveable! It is THE nicest hostel I have EVER been to. It has double beds, rooms with a view, beautiful dinning room overlooking the beach, clean and organized kitchen and comfortable living room. Staff is VERY helpful. The place and the setting is gorgeous! It is a bit out of the way but well worth it. Bus stop is across the street. Downhill estate and hiking paths are within hiking distance. Cute tea house/art gallery withing walking distance. The beach is wonderful. Great to see the horses come for exercise every morning. Gotta go to this one!
