“Amazing place and people”
Reviewed 28 June 2010

Having lived in Ireland for almost ten years, I had never really visited the North. We went up last week with my wife and one of the highlights was our stay at the Downhill Hostel. We arrived late, with no booking, and got the warmest welcome from McCall, who gave us a choice of two rooms, both nice and clean. We went for the one with a view of the beach. In the morning our little window was a frame for the rising sun, around 5am.
For sure if we're around again, we know where we'll stay. A big thank you.

This is the third trip I've had to Downhill Hostel, a fine old house overlooking the beach. On the first occasion I stayed in a shared dormitary room, the second in a private room and, this time round, in a private room with ensuite. While basic by hotel standards, all of the rooms I've stayed in have been comfortable, clean and quiet. The hostel itself is scrupulously clean and, while while kept, remains informal. There's a well equipped kitchen, comfortable living room and, while I didn't bring a computer, I'm pretty sure there's free internet access. The staff are friendly and the feeling relaxed and easygoing. Access to Downhill Strand is only a short walk from the front door. The Strand itself is one of best white-sand beaches and coastlines I've visited anywhere. It's probably best to have access to a car as the location is remote from shops and other services. That said, on this last trip, I travelled by bike with my partner from Castlerock and left from Ballerena railway station. However, if you do this, be prepared for the changeable weather and, bearing in mind you'll have to carry your own food, distances of several miles to get to stations, shops etc. Good tennis courts are available for a small charge at nearby Benone Tourist Complex and there's a worthwhile day trip to Donegall by ferry from Magilligan Point. Also, if you have a car and the weather's fine, it's worth a trip to Binevenagh mountain with spectacular views over the Foyle Estuary and North coast. Closer to hand, there's fine walking on the Strand and, as long as you're the outdoor type, plenty to explore with cliffs, Mussenden Temple and the Downhill Demesne nearby. If you're after remote beauty in a comfortable, relaxed setting, this one's a real hidden gem.

When a car trip with friends through Northern Ireland didn't go according to plan, we were just relieved to be able to have ANY hostel to stay at. But as we were driving away from Downhill, we all agreed that it was the best hostel any of us had ever been to. Downhill Hostel is located just past Castlerock outside of Coleraine; the hostel is in a beautiful house right under cliffs next to the ocean. The rooms are large and friendly; the kitchen was fantastic and the showers were just amazing. The owners were very nice and accommodating (especially considering our last minute reservation!) and overall, it was a great place to spent the night.

Myself and my partner stayed at Downhill Hostlel for a few nights and really can't fault our stay! We had to rely on public transport which isn't the greatest in the area, but other than that, the Hostel provided us with such a relaxing and enjoyable stay, with beautiful scenery and a chance to meet with people staying in a relaxing environment! It is definately placed in a good position to see some beautiful gardens and monuments, as well as acess right along the amazing North Coast! Please don't pass up an opportunity to stay at this hostel if it comes your way, you will not regret it!
We are looking forward to our next stay at Downhill, hopefully for longer and definately with the use of a car!

Four of us stayed at Downhill in the summer of 2005. Loved the location, right on the beach. We had a car, so it was not a problem to drive to the nearest town for a pub and grocery. There really is nothing nearby. Coleraine's library had free internet access at the time. William and McCall and their staff were friendly, and the place was clean. We spent one rainy day painting pottery, which was McCall's "other" job.

Nearby attractions: Giant's Causeway and Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge.

Stayed 3 nights with my wife in May. It was a great location, especially friendly to day trips all over the north coast. Private rooms were nice, showers and common areas kept quite clean. William (the host) was friendly and helpful.

Downhill is very quiet and not "next to" anything but the beach and right at the bottom of the cliff below Mussenden Temple. The beach was amazingly empty and perfect for walks. Nearby Castlerock and another village on the A2 provide a couple of grocery shops. (Nearest places to eat are in Coleraine or Limavady) If you have a car, the Bishops Road (100 yards from the hostel) is great fun.

  • Liked — Location, location, location
  • Disliked — Not their fault, but Downhill needs a grocery store and a pub.
