I went for a meal with some friends and enjoyed the evening very much. The staff were very busy but took time to greet us and make sure we were supplied with drinks. The food was excellent, as usual. I highly recommend The Riverhill.

Lovely Food & Great Service. Went with friends for a Christmas meal. The food was as you would expect from a winner of Master Chef very well cooked and presented. Plenty to eat and served very hot. A good selection on the menu thankfully not all turkey and trimmings

Came here for a birthday meal with my family and based primarily on what I hoped a Masterchef winner could produce in terms of food. The welcome was nice and attentive and we started in the bar with a few drinks. Felt a little rushed on ordering but think this was due to a number of large parties dining at the same time. Starters arrived pretty much as soon as we sat down which was not ideal but again I understand the need for the kitchen to get the meals out. Waiters were not very attentive and it took a while each time we wanted to order a drink. We could have spent more on wine if only we could get it before we had finished eating a course.

I had scallops and duck and it was cooked and presented vey nicely and as I expected. The fish and lentils as well as the seafood starter did not inspire. The meats were served carvery style and my family seemed to enjoy them. Potatoes and veg were served on the side in massive portions, it seemed like a pound of each and not necessary. Puds were served old style off a trolley.

All in all, we enjoyed the meal but I would like to come back and try the tasting menu/regular menu to see if the cooking on the whole has moved away from carvery type food, and loaded portions. I would also like to see desserts made to order. I suspect there is a balancing act going on between the traditional and the modern, and hopefully the balance will tip more in favour of the modern.

We have just spent the weekend at this hotel and were happy with things generally. Initially there was a problem with our room, but this was quickly rectified by the staff without any fuss.
I found the staff to be friendly and very efficient and the hotel clean and tidy - as was our room and bathroom.
We had dinner in the resturant the first evening and elsewhere the second (simply for a change). The starters were very good then I had the lamb and my partner the steak; the lamb was excellent but the steak was really nothing to write home about. The deserts were also very good.
I think my only gripe was about breakfast, which was served on a Sunday from 8.15 to 9.30!! (the other days it also ends at 9.30). One can understand during the week perhaps but at the weekend??? Otherwise, it was well cooked with plenty of choice and the service was very good. Somebody here mentioned there was no fresh fruit in the morning - we had some, so perhaps that has changed.
All in all, we would definitely recommend this hotel for a pleasant and relaxing weekend and will certainly return if we are in the area again; perhaps not to the resturant which we felt was a little on the expensive side seeing as we only had one glass of wine with the meal! But certainly in all other aspects.

We stayed at Riverhill for three nights during our friends wedding celebrations. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel completely at home and welcome. We stayed in room 3 and it was very clean, spacious and comfortable. The bathroom was also clean and adequately equiped. In the room, along with tea and coffee making facilities, was a little basket of fruit and goodies. The staff could not have been more helpful. The food, both breakfast and the evening meal we had on one of our nights, was excellent.

I have never left a Trip Avisor review before, but i was so impressed by this small family run hotel, I simply had to!!!

Room Tip: All the rooms have been recently refurbished, we had room three, but all the rooms were fine.

We booked Riverhill as a handy overnight before catching a morning ferry. While reviews had suggested a good standard we were delighted with all aspects of our stay. Our room with four-poster bed was welcoming and very comfortable. For dinner we both chose from the standard menu and all aspects of the meal were delicious. Breakfast was adequate but could have benefitted from some fresh fruit. Otherwise we found everyone very friendly, enjoyed our stay and would recommend the Riverhill both for a meal and to stay.
